Cop Drama is an homage to the groovy, retro sounds of classic American TV cop shows such as "S.W.A.T," "The Mod Squad," and "The Streets of San Francisco." With a large ensemble of colorful sounds and stylized interpretation, Cop Drama is an enjoyable piece for medium to advanced percussion ensembles.

A genre piece through and through, the rhythm section of guitar, keyboard, bass guitar, and drumset is the stylistic glue that keeps the mood intact. Combining the sounds of funky 70's cop rock, mysterious noir jazz, and modern themes in multiple meters, Cop Drama will provide some fun and entertainment during percussion ensemble concerts or indoor concert competitions.

Cop Drama (Jim Casella)

As one of the most famous Spanish classical guitar pieces of the 20th century, Asturias-Leyenda by Albéniz has found its way to the rosewood bars of the marimba in many different renditions. Gifford Howarth's new arrangement can stand alone as its own marimba solo, or better yet can feature a large ensemble of mostly beginning-level accompaniment. This works very well to have younger groups backing a featured solo performer and offers a fresh new take on this classic piece of literature.

Leyenda (Albéniz; Gifford Howarth)

Written for the Phantom Regiment percussion ensemble, Rochambeaux was awarded first prize in the 2001 DCI percussion ensemble competition. The dominating 7/8 feel, flashy keyboard runs, and ethnic modalities drive the three distinct sections of this groove-based work.

As an option, an 11th player may be added as a featured marimba soloist. There is a separate part for this optional soloist which can be featured over an elongated treatment of the slower, middle phrase. Other solos may be traded among some (or all) other performers during the 6/8 African section ensuring that no two performances of this piece will ever be the same. Certain to garner audience appeal!
