PT003: Bakongo - Awe / Bout It [Pinkturban]

When Bakongo, the Afro-inspired alter ego of UK Funky pioneer Wayne Goodlitt AKA Roska, dropped his 'Grind / Tee Oh Ell' release on Melé's label, Quadrants, last year, it soon caught the ears of Pinkturban label boss Otm Shank. Mesmerized by the sound, Otm commissioned the massive Bakongo remix of his track "Bounce."

Now, Bakongo returns to the Los Angeles-based label Pinkturban with two dazzlingly pristine Afro club tracks, "Awe" and "Bout It," that blur UK/US Bass boundaries and showcase Wayne's top-notch production skills.

This time, Arabic Square Kufic artwork comes from Red Temple Art. The calligraphy is an extract from a poem by the preeminent Sufi mystic Mevlana Jalal ad-Din Rumi, which translates to "Rejoice for he who knows the truth, knows that bliss begets bliss."

This mix was influenced by the many R&B artists around me that I get to call my friends! I wanted to showcase their work and mix it with today's R&B heavy hitters. Plus, we could all use some soothing R&B sounds while we self-isolate! 
Affiliations/Residencies/Projects: Roshanie is a Brampton-based DJ that is known for her nostalgic and global song selections. She's a resident DJ for the JUNGLE party series in Toronto, (presented by Hip Hop Collective, Stay Out Late) and a resident host on ISO Radio. She is also the founder of feminist educational initiative, Solidarity in Sound, which works toward gender equity in music.
