We're all clear by now, aren't we, that Chicagoan footworking beats are a global musical fixture? With producers now deep into the style from Beijing to Santiago, and untold fresh hybrids, it can no longer be written off as a localised curio or flash in the pan. The latest name to find support from Planet Mu – a label that's been instrumental in the global spread – is Jlin, a producer from Gary, Indiana. Her track “Erotic Heat” was a highlight of the Mu Bangs & Works Vol 2 compilation, and her coming album shows that it's not a fluke. “So High” is just another example: as compositionally tight as anything that's come from the footworking canon, with an emotional intensity all its own... and there's a whole album of this stuff (including a Holly Herndon collab!) coming on the 23rdMarch.

DJ Rashad was and still is a legend.  Not only was he a Footwork and Juke pioneer but also one of the hardest working DJs and producers I've ever met.  The dude really never stopped working.  He was either globetrotting and spreading the sound of Chicago around the world or in the lab pushing himself to expand his sound further and further.  On April 26 2014 the world lost one of the most inspiring and talented artists of our time.  His spirit moves through Teklife, the dancers, his friends and everyone he has touched or influenced.

Over the past few years I've been lucky enough to collaborate with Rashad and even be remixed by him.  The tracks were never completely finished and seemed impossible to finish after he passed.  Eventually I mustered up enough courage to open the sessions and finish them.  It is what Rashad would have wanted me to do.  

"Movin' Forward" is a collection of those collaborations plus two exclusive unreleased Machinedrum tracks that were heavily inspired by Rashad and the Teklife crew.  I called it "Movin' Forward" because I know Rashad wants everyone he touched to keep pushing themselves and follow in his footsteps on the path he had been creating all these years.  I'm proud to have known him, shared the stage with him and to have collaborated with him.  May his sound and spirit continue to inspire and spread through everyones speakers!  Teklife to tha next life!!

Understand is the first track off of 'Movin' Forward',  out on Friday April 24th. 100% proceeds will go to his family and estate.

Teklife Till Tha Next Life Vol 2 is the second installment in Taso’s compilation series featuring fellow members of the legendary Chicago footwork establishment Teklife. The Los Angeles-based producer, whom has been part of the crew since 2012, showcases his own work alongside collaborations with young blood DJ Manny and founders DJ Spinn and the late DJ Rashad. Many motifs of footwork culture both past and present are explored: Revamped acid house, classic call and response chants, and samples flipped inside out. Uplifting piano progressions, amen breaks, and other nods to UK rave and jungle culture also meet, taking London sound palates to a Chicago chop shop. While half of the tracks are solo efforts, the other half embrace the crucial collaborative spirit of Teklife. An MPC, a few keyboards, and a bag of weed between friends has long been the environment responsible for the bulk of classic footwork music, and that’s the same place this compilation comes from. Teklife Till Tha Next Life Vol. 2 is both a document of Taso’s respect and love for Chicago’s forward-thinking subculture, as well as proof that he is also part of the force keeping it innovating modern music.
