FOAIE VERDE is a live performance that brings together on stage authentic folklore artists, spoken word musicians and contemporary dancers in a ritual atmosphere of spirituality-evoking multimedia. watch here www.vimeo.com/tataia

the main aim of the performance is to promote undiluted folklore and the authentic performers of doina, a musical form that belongs to UNESCO heritage and was made popular internationally in the 1900s when bela bartok found it in transilvania. there are very few people left that have learned from their elders to perform the original doina, so we raise awareness to keep this ancient tradition alive. thinking about doina as the spiritual matrix of the romanian soul, the concept was to combine this genre in both its traditional and contemporary forms in order to emphasize their common grounds.

TATAIA is a cultural magazine that captures on an x-ray of the current state of grass-roots culture. alongside the printed magazine, TATAIA is a producer of innovative, trans-disciplinary projects.

FOAIE VERDE

norzeatic is a spoken word poet, one of the most philosophical new romanian wave rappers. aka vexxatu'vexx, he is performing since the ‘90s, being involved in projects like sindicatul R.A.N./S., methadon 3000 and blanoz. he performes live with electronic and classical instruments. mihai balabas is a sound designer and improviser, a violinist and guitarist active both on the symphonic and alternative underground scenes in romania.

06. FOAIE VERDE - norzeatic, mihai balabas - asfintit de februarie

this sound is part of a contemporary dance performance with andreea novac. grigore lese is the most renowned romanian contemporary ethnomusicologist. in FOAIE VERDE he plays the semantron, an ancient instrument made of a long wooden plank, which is struck with two wooden mallets. in today’s romania it is the instrument played by monks to summon christian orthodox believers to prayer.

05. FOAIE VERDE - grigore lese - dans andreea

born in 1977 in tara lapusului, romania, zamfira is a geography teacher for primary school children. she learned her songs as a child by listening to the women singing while making the hay or working the fields.

04. FOAIE VERDE - zamfira muresan - parauas cu apa rece

born in 1943 in perieni, romania, aurelian butnaru has been playing the cimpoi (romanian  bagpipe) for almost 60 years. he has been a shepherd his whole life and this song is a romanian doina called “the shepherd’s bag”. aurelian is one of the few bagpipe builders in romania.

03. FOAIE VERDE - aurelian butnaru - traista ciobanului

maria and mihai balabas are brother and sister, sound designers and improvisers both on the symphonic and alternative underground scenes in romania. maria is a singer and performer; mihai is a violinist and guitarist. this piece was selected for helicotrema recorded audio festival 2013.

02. FOAIE VERDE - maria balabas, nicolas tiboi, mihai balabas - madlena sonora

razvan rosu is one of the last and one of the youngest tulnic (romanian alphorn) player and builder in romania. the tulnic calls were for centuries the only means of remote communication for the people in the little spread-out villages in maramures. now, this instrument is almost extinct.
