[BD010] Microtub – Chronic Shift LP

Microtub is the world’s first and only microtonal tuba trio, exploring Just Intonation and the rich harmonic potential of the tuba. This album features material from Robin Hayward’s pieces „Sonic Drift“ and „Star System“, recorded in the stunning acoustics of the large water reservoir in Berlin-Pankow, reworked and mixed with analogue synthesizers by Peder Simonsen.

Recorded in „Kunstkopf“ stereophony, this unlikely combination of tubas and simple synth pitches provides a meditative and immersive experience, and an auditory glimpse into a truly unique acoustic space. While „Chronic Shift“ zones in on the neutral microtonal harmonies that underly „Sonic Drift“, the synths on „System Reboot“ mainly shadow the harmonics in the giant room, both as sustained pitches and as spaced out droplets lending movement to the track.

Hidden in plain sight, grinning through worry, living in insecurity – modern society has returned to a day-by-day race for survival. To be vulnerable is the new normal; afraid, a bare minimum. Something was bound to emerge from the quiet throngs of the new precariat, and Racine is such a voice, setting to music those modern lives defined by uncertainty.

Quelque Chose Tombe (‘Something Falls’) is a set of compositions that confronts demons both inner and outer head-on. Created during a period of necessary unemployment somewhere in Montreal – caring for one’s health can take precedence over work – the music is both a grotesque dance of the goblins and the gentle opiatic breath of the protectors. It’s a harrowing reflection of the prevalent vampiric hypochondria forcing a generation into fatigue. 

The sounds crawling out of Racine speak with their own internal logic. Snippets of fractured tunes creak through perturbed post-digital soundscapes, blurred and fragmented along the way into haunting amorphous instrumentals. The two-part title track is multi-part sonic maze where raven-like pitch bent notes gather, a broken rave theme punctures its way through bass fog, and silence clefts the music in two, ushering in a coda of heartbroken ambience. As the album’s suite progresses, Racine shepherds mutant melodic themes in and out of earshot, like clear thoughts bringing temporary order to a state of emotional panic and withdrawal. A host of other sounds too – voices and birdsong, cybernetically deformed – populate Racine’s scarred productions. 

Emerging from Quelque Chose Tombe’s constant darkness however, is a latent sense of hope. Racine is turning modern vulnerability into a strength, creating a singular aesthetic to reflect and confront an uncomfortable present.

‘Kainos’ is the debut album by Index, a new electronic music project by British musician Simon Scott, recorded in 2016 to 2019 in Los Angeles. Scott is a veteran British composer, field recordist, drummer and mastering engineer. 
Taking inspiration from the conflicting opinions of Brexit debates from the Houses Of Parliament, Scott fed these live streams into his modular synthesiser for improvising and composing with. These symbiotic jams formed the foundations for each Index track, with only the sparse nocturnal beats from a Roland 909 and transparent editing of each modular jam to accompany the synthesis. 

Scott’s association with shoegaze, as a member of UK band Slowdive, and ambient influences, present in his solo work on Touch and 12k, is replaced by the early electronics influence of Coil and Throbbing Gristle on Insides, early metal pioneers Black Sabbath rising on tracks such as Blackesh and Exit B. The throbbing 909 pulse on Sprinkles provides a Dubbed out groove that calls to mind Arthur Russell jamming with Basic Channel and the bottom heavy bass lines of dubstep on Countdown has is visceral and contains a brooding sample of Rachel Goswell’s (from Slowdive) voice sucking everything into the mix.
A key conceptual influence to Kainos is Luigi Russolo’s Futurist manifesto for music, The Art Of Noises who glorifies the use of “noise-sounds” and other nonconventional musical sounds. This captures the imagination of a modern culture immersed in ecological disaster (climate catastrophe) and surrounded by the constant noise of capitalism and consumerism. Other inspirations for this album were taken from literary and non-musical ideas such as Donna Haraway’s 2016 book ‘Staying with the trouble; Making kin in the Chthulucene ’ and its central tenet that “our task is to make trouble, to stir up potent response to devastating events on a damaged earth”.
Index is the musical expression of Scott’s profound discontent with the lack of equilibrium we have right now and how disconnected we have all become in relation to nature and each other. Kainos means “now, a time of beginnings, a time for ongoing, for freshness” (Haraway). It is born from ecological grief and political frustration at a time when electronic and ambient music is sitting too comfortably in safe areas of sonic experience with nothing to say and providing aural wallpaper that is safe and sterile.
