Comprising 11 tracks lasting over 67 minutes long, The Chronicles of Manimal and Samara recorded their debut album 'Full Spectrum' between February and June of 2020 at the artists' home studio in Camden Town during the first London Lockdown. 

The album sweeps across the wide spectrum of music genres and the songs are arranged in a way that it takes listeners through the Full Spectrum of human experience and emotion. Each song is a complete experience on its own, each blending different influences and styles, while also continuing and building upon the meaning and message presented in the previous.  

'Full Spectrum' traverses dystopia and utopian worlds, balancing dark and grim reminders of human mortality with triumphant moments of hope and individual agency, opening up avenues for listeners to escape beyond the crisis and harsh realities of the current times – into the sphere of the transcendent and the numinous.

// The Album
'Trust No Leaders' is a record that weaves a voyage through heavy metal history — from its roots in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal up until present day, fusing heavy metal with their signature ‘poetry performance’. Set against orchestral and cinematic soundscapes, the record also pays tribute to non-Western musical traditions, including Native American and South American folk music, Vedic chants, and Indo-Persian classical music. The lyrics bring together elements from modern theater, classical Persian poetry, to Jungian Psychology and theology. 

Commenting on the motivation behind Trust No Leaders, 
TCOMAS: "Our inspiration extends beyond musical genres and the confines of discipline.The confluence of influences in our album extend throughout time and across cultures. In retrospect, this really captures our ethos: Look back into the past for insight, and look into the future with foresight. And in doing so, we created something new of our own."

Landing about 15 months after their debut album Full Spectrum, the duo’s sophomore LP expresses a more aggressive side to the band and was recorded last summer at TCOMAS’ studio in Camden Town, London.   

Discussing the new album’s motivation, TCOMAS:
"The current crisis and the events of our time have made it necessary for us to analyse, investigate, and expose the issues in urgent need of systemic change by looking inwards into the human condition. We want the album to be a beacon of hope, for making a future that prioritises people and the environment."

The events of 2020-21 have exposed the fragility of our global systems and the flawed foundations on which modern societies and economies are built. ‘Count the Dead’ brings attention to complex issues concerning the value of human life. The song draws attention to the social and economic injustices that plague society, and the violent health inequalities that have been further exacerbated by the global pandemic, which has now claimed more than 4 million lives worldwide.    

Continuing the themes addressed in ‘Love in the Time of Pestilence’, ‘Count the Dead’ is the second instalment of songs addressing the ongoing pandemic and global crisis. At a time when the world appears to be more divided than ever before, discourse has never been more important, and urgent.

‘The Prophet’ petitions for the ethical use of Artificial Intelligence technologies in order to protect human consciousness and our existence as a species. The song is an ominous reminder that if we are not careful, we might find ourselves with a technology that destroys the civilisation that invented it.”

‘Nothing but Dust’ addresses the theme of modern man’s search for his soul. The song revisits the ancient practice of desert hermitage as a means to confront and enrich one’s soul. 

The lyrics recall the sounds and semantics of the poems of the 13th c. Persian mystic, Rumi, while the music has Arabian influences. In this increasingly material world we live in, the song, to quote Jung, finds solace in the ‘desert of one's soul’ – through poetry and metal.

'The Chefs Song' is a satirical vaudeville that dramatises the pressures of working in a busy kitchen. What the theatrical comedy of the song belies  is a sinister truth, a tragedy that plagues our modern societies — the prevalence of modern slavery in the 21st century.

According to a study by the Human Trafficking  Foundation (2018): More than 1 in 10 people who work in hospitality in the world are reported to be working under modern slavery conditions. For far too long, this has remained hidden from the public eye — behind the closed doors of some kitchens, hotels, and restaurants.

Leaving no stones unturned, the song is about the true scum of society. They are ones at the top, the powers that be, those who “prey on the weak and powerless” and “leach upon the fat of the land, in the name of profit and power”. As the saying goes, “The honest man is defeated, and the scum always rises to the top”.
 
The track concludes the album in a dystopian near-future where “earth is nothing but a barren desert of empty fields and famished men”. To the beat of the marching band, onwards humanity goes, treading steadily towards the end…”

TCOMAS: "Our inspiration extends beyond musical genres and the confines of discipline.The confluence of influences in our album extend throughout time and across cultures. In retrospect, this really captures our ethos: Look back into the past for insight, and look into the future with foresight. And in doing so, we created something new of our own."

Landing about 15 months after their debut album Full Spectrum, the duo’s sophomore LP expresses a more aggressive side to the band and was recorded last summer at TCOMAS’ studio in Camden Town, London.

"The current crisis and the events of our time have made it necessary for us to analyse, investigate, and expose the issues in urgent need of systemic change by looking inwards into the human condition. “Hypermetamorphosis” (a term used in the 1800s to refer to the condition Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). The song explores what it is like to live with ADHD. The song is a journey of discovery through the imagination of the ADHD mind, allowing one to see connections and flows in a way that is inaccessible through the filter of rationality in a neurotypical brain.

“Smell of Your Rot” is about breaking free from the chains of psychological abuse. The song is told from the point of view of a woman who reconnects with her soul in order to take back control of her sense of self after years of living under the control and oppression of a coercive partner. A symphony of metal guitars and classical strings set the scene for this triumphant moment of liberation — which can be likened to waking up from “a deep restless sleep lasting years and year long”. Finally, she sees everything in the world in a completely different light.

Blending Thrash Metal with Vedic chants and elements of Indian Classical music,  the lyrics draw from an array of ancient and colonial texts, such as the Mayan Codices and Biblical texts, where descriptions of human sacrifice rituals can be found. The track revisits the practice of human sacrifice rituals of the past in order to shed light on modern practices of human sacrifice that still exist today.

"Atoms", tells the story of the creation of the universe to the fall of civilisation. It deals with the existential questions surrounding mankind’s purpose and place in the world. The lyrics combines original written material, with extracts adapted from religious and mythological texts (The Rigveda, The Bible, Corpus Hermeticum, The Mystery of Amergin), canonical texts such as Inferno by Dante, Phaedo by Plato, and the works of William Blake, William Morris and Ernst Niekisch.

Inspired by Dante’s Inferno, “Psychopath’s Monologue” charts the path of damnation – from purgatory to the depths of hell. The track fleets between the harsh and the heavenly, the brutal and the beautiful - Grinding metal guitar and baselines layered over pounding industrial techno kicks encases the theatrical spoken-lyrics delivered as an elegiac monologue. 

The composition is an assemblage of 7 sonnet poems written over a 10 year period. The work assimilates ancient imagery with the contemporary. While the meaning of the lyrics is often abstracted and cryptic, its delivery is always awash with emotion.

“‘Psychopath's Monologue” is  the second single of The Chronicles of Manimal and Samara (TCOMAS). The track forms part of the independently produced album ‘Full Spectrum'.

Deus Ex Machina is an arresting sonic and theatrical experience of man’s perennial struggle between fate and free will. Charged with both pathos and ethos, the song is a musical revisitation of classical literature’s greatest tragedy – the story of Oedipus Rex.

"Deus Ex Machina" tells the story of King Oedipus of Thebes, who despite all his efforts, ends up fulfilling the prophecy he was trying so hard to avoid: that he would kill his father and marry his mother.

Inspired by the sonnets of Shakespeare and the lyrical poetry of Ancient Greece, the lyrics tells the story of Oedipus Rex – a play by Sophocles written over two thousand years ago. The song is chanted and recited over the music much like in the chorus in Greek tragedy.

Released worldwide on September 18, 2020, "DEUS EX MACHINA" is the third single of The Chronicles of Manimal and Samara. The track forms part of the independently produced album ‘Full Spectrum'.

Mata Hari (meaning "sun" in Malay) reimagines the sound of the 80s in the year 2080. The song is told through the eyes of an artist, who creates a painting as a declaration of love and as a testament to the intensity of emotions and feelings (for another) when words and actions were inadequate.

‘The Descent’ presents a theatrical experience of the awe-inspiring, impetuous, almost frightening, beauty of nature. It is narrated by the voice of Mother Nature herself, who recites an ominous monologue warning us of an imminent disaster.

The song offers a glimpse into the psyche and essence of Mother Nature and her duality – who is both at once Gaia – the gentlest mother, who at her bosom feeds plants and all things living, and Mother Nature – the great equaliser, the wrathful goddess Kali, she who is the source of all of Earth’s calamities.

‘Love in the Time of Pestilence’ is an experimental metal track that reflects upon the events of the ongoing pandemic and global crisis. Composed and recorded during the outbreak of the first wave of Covid-19 in Europe, the amplitude waveform view of this track, with its peaks and troughs, is in itself a visualisation of the evolution and progression of the pandemic over the course of the year 2020.

The spoken lyrics combine original writings with historical quotes in order to remind humanity that if we don’t learn from history, we are doomed to repeat it. The artists chose to release this track as Europe goes into a second Lockdown. It is an appeal to humanity and an emergency broadcast to mankind at a critical moment in the current crisis.

The accompanying music video is a tribute and homage to all the healthcare professionals around the world who have risked their own lives to save the lives of others. The video documents mankind’s experience of plagues and pandemics over the millennia. This is presented through a corpus of art historical works, archival photographs, and film footage. “At The Worlds End” is a progressive metal song that imagines the world in the end times in order to raise awareness on the effects of mankind on our planet's environment. The song is told through the eyes of two lovers, who exchange a final declaration of love in a post-apocalyptic elegy, on the last day on earth. Mournful yet resolute, the lovers’ final parting valediction also offers a glimpse of a possible future, and the hope of a new world, when they pledge to meet each other again, “where it all began, at The Worlds End".

About The Chronicles of Manimal and Samara

The Chronicles of Manimal and Samara (TCOMAS) are a London-based duo comprising Andrea Papi and Daphne Ang. Coming together in early 2020 to record their debut album FULL SPECTRUM, the duo are fast establishing their niche in music as pioneers of a new form of expression, through the performance of poetry in music, and as an act that traverses between the wide-reaching spectrums of music. Drawing inspiration from TOOL and Kraftwerk, as well as the poetry of Sylvia Plath, Virginia Woolf, and Jim Morrison, TCOMAS brings literature, art, and history together into a space where rock and metal meets electronic.

Origins, the third album by The Chronicles of Manimal and Samara, is out now.

The Chronicles of Manimal and Samara (TCOMAS), a UK-based duo featuring Daphne Ang (Singapore) and Andrea Papi (Italy), emerged in London in early 2020. Their debut album, Full Spectrum, established their innovative fusion of poetry performance and heavy music, creating a unique form of expression that has become synonymous with TCOMAS.
TCOMAS's sophomore album, Trust No Leaders, released on July 1, 2022, explores the history of metal, paying tribute to various subgenres. Set against orchestral and cinematic landscapes, the songs also incorporate non-Western musical influences. The lyrics draw inspiration from contemporary and classical poetry, as well as Jungian psychology.
