Since Amani Friend (of Desert Dwellers, Liquid Bloom) met Alex DeYoung in 1995, the duo has experienced many forms of electronic music. As the scene has shifted and evolved, the two producer's paths have ebbed and flowed in and out of each other's lives. After a long hiatus, Variant Field have come to Gravitas Recordings for their first EP in over a decade, Immeasurable. Represented via three original tracks, two edits, and remixes by Lil Fish and DISSØLV, Immeasurable evokes a timeless space, a portal beyond the edge of genres and boxes. Immeasurable nods to several nodes along the electronic music spectrum the two have experienced since the mid '90s, while bringing the music into modern bass realms. Through this, Variant Field has successfully masterminded an emotive, cinematic piece of work that is in perpetual flux.
 
In winter, a mysterious "Silhouette" stands tall in front of the dark gateway, welcoming listeners as she ushers them through the arch. Rewinding time, autumn re-emerges and courages "Letting Go" through hypnotic, melodic beats. "Immeasurable" is an explorative odyssey that floats through a tranquil nebula. Contributing their own creations of the title track, Lil Fish incorporates hypnotic chants and ethereal world influence that precedes wobbly bass energy, while DISSØLV adds dominant yet quivery basslines to the ether. Fast forwarding to spring, "Letting Go" further propels the enchanting, tribal excursion. Coming full circle in summer, "Silhouette" is a darker, more modern IDM offering that pulls listeners back through the gateway and shuts the portal.

Variant Field - Letting Go (Spring) [Conscious Electronic Premiere]

As the COVID-19 pandemic has ushered producers into their home studios, Contra Scandal utilized quarantine to fully immerse himself in music. For six months, he dedicated his full mental capacity to create a collection of work that steers listeners through a rollercoaster of emotion. After meticulously crafting compositions that embody all his production styles and techniques from the past decade, he is now ready to debut his album, Full Circle, available via Gravitas Recordings. Behold the enthralling universe of Full Circle as his signature violin tethers melodic elements together to transport listeners to all corners of the globe.

Contra Scandal encourages listeners to elevate their mind and lose their fear as “Immersion” initiates powerful bass crescendos and liquid basslines. Venture onto a daring “Escapade” as mysterious strings lure travellers into a cavern of psychedelic oscillations. “Mile High Livin’” fondly reflects on the exuberant nightlife of Colorado, expressed through attention-grabbing hip hop vocals and versatile bass backdrops. Atmospheres slow down in “A Calling” as remote vocals illustrate Contra Scandal’s experience growing up an only child in the Redwoods of Kings Mountain, California. Voyagers shortly encounter a “Snake Charmer,” who forewarns those who attempt to harm him. Featuring Spirah’s mesmerizing vocals, the two reflect on past faults, vowing to stay awake and learn the “Hard Way.” For the title track, Contra Scandal brings passengers “Full Circle” through deep, dark, and dynamic low end. Resume the dusky path with “Rebel” as edgy instrumentation accompanies wanderers through a murky tunnel. Approaching “The Remaining Light,” listeners near the final destination as warm auras welcome them home. Morillo presents an engaging epilogue with his “Mile High Livin’” remix, as cascading dubs and distant vocals bid adieu to the vigorous record.

'Tiny Things' is a masterpiece of small elements which encapsulate the sound and persona that is Oomah. “The goal with this project was to take all of the tones that I love within modern bass music, and combine them with my favorite grooves that I have learned  and recorded as a performance drummer, transforming them into one elegant piece of music that dances between beauty and power.” It is an incredibly dense song filled with psychedelic leads reminiscent of Charlesthefirst, and unique textures that could only be compared to artists like Culprate and Aphex Twin.

2. Golden Lotus

This song represents the turning point for Synchromystica. Prior, we had a skeleton of songs, but Golden Lotus literally came together in four hours, and then before we knew it, we had a single. I invited my friend Dar Sernoff to come over, and he flipped out. From seeing his reaction, it was pretty clear we were onto something good, and the goal for the EP (and their live show) solidified. Fun Trivia: Taylor has this jaw-harp sitting around his studio, and we recorded it in one take to put little vibe-bombs throughout the “get down” section… There’s a part, right before a major drop where Taylor accidentally hit his teeth and says “Ow” right into the mic. I’m not one to pass up a fun mistake, and took that “Ow” and pitch-shifted it down. It happens only once, and it’s perfect.

The Peaking Goddess Collective - Star Peace

We traveled to Africa a few years back in search of new collaborations with artists from all over the continent. On our Journey we recorded over 13 songs in 4 countries and Akwaaba is one of the gems that was created. We got connected with a Ngoni/African Harp player who lived on the Coast of Ghana and from the moment we met, we knew we'd be great friends. After enjoying some drinks and tokes on the beach, we went back to our hotel room and set up a mini recording studio and got to work. Ben Ada has been playing music for his whole life and it really showed when we started laying down tracks. Most of the recordings we got in 1 or 2 takes and after a super fun studio session we had 4 original songs! Akwaaba means "welcome" in Ghana and is used all the time. Landing in Africa we had no idea what to expect, but from the moment we set foot on the mother continent, we felt so welcomed and loved that it was really hard to leave. There will be a 4 song EP Coming out this summer with more sounds from Africa, but in the meantime, I wanted to leave you with this single to chew on while you wait!
