Those who’ve kept their ears tuned to the innovative underground have likely stumbled upon the tribalistic, psychedelic, and focused sounds of Auckland-based producer Eli Høff. Melekan is no exception. Melding traditional psychedelic textures with the deep, introspective palette of the contemporary mental tekno movement, the album constructs a fully immersive world. Synthesised insects chatter, unseen creatures wail, and natural percussive echoes ripple across locked-in low-end grooves, hallmarks of Høff’s hypnotic approach.

Inspired by the bush and doof scenes of Aotearoa and Australia, Melekan feels both ancient and immediate. Its sound suggests a forest alive with ritual: bass hits like the footsteps of larger entities, birdlike chirps flitting through branches, and strange conversations drifting in the wind.

More than a collection of tracks, Melekan is a sonic painting: an ecosystem of rhythm and resonance that dances, breathes, and beckons the listener deeper.

Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland-based producer Eli Høff releases his highly anticipated full-length record, 'Raraku'. The artist, becoming increasingly known across Aotearoa/New Zealand as a local visionary for forward-thinking techno, delivers a striking debut across the record, a comfortable footing atop his wealth of experience thus far.

'Crone', premiered here, is a perfect encapsulation of what 'Raraku' offers: a powerful and hypnotic ritual. 

A sparse, echoing atmosphere sits beneath a pulsating kick, regularly drawing the listener in & out of 'Crone's sonic terrain with a shifting focus across percussion, texture and space.

Of the release, Eli Høff shared:

"This album is the culmination and manifestation of my years of experimentation within the electronic world, and I think it is, so far, the best representation and expression of my artistic intent to date.



My ethos here was to step back and think more about the purpose I want to fulfill, what I want my music to provide, and then, moving deeper, what I myself gain from this kind of music. The need to escape, I think, is deeply set within us, and electronic music is incredibly effective at providing and aiding that escape. A dark room, a dark field, a massive wall of sound, and a crowd of people all there for the same reason. To me, this has always felt ceremonial, with the DJ taking on an almost shamanic role. I’ve explored a lot about how to lean into this properly, but I don’t think I’ve fully captured it until now.



Minimalism is an interesting thing and, in my opinion, the key to the whole question. Creating a track that is stripped back and empty, yet sonically interesting and atmospherically potent. This is the hardest challenge I’ve faced as a producer and is what I’ve spent years trying to achieve. I’m a dissociative partier, meaning I like to get enveloped by the music and lose myself within its worlds, and Raraku is my take on creating one of these worlds to get lost in. Through the run time, you can find yourself in ancient forests, arid deserts, or part of rituals from epochs past. It’s something that won’t fit everywhere, but when played at the right time, in the right environment, it’ll be a special experience.



All these sensibilities are what I want to capture with Abyssal Soundworks. Aotearoa has an incredibly special scene, but our voice and visibility globally is very small. We have a whole bunch of world-class artists who don’t get seen, or don’t release music because they feel as though they won’t be. Or they feel alienated by local scenes because their music might be a bit too forward-thinking, or just slightly outside the ordinary. Ideally, ABSW could be an outlet for these artists to connect with the international scene, and more importantly, for the international scene to connect with us."

This project spreads across different soundscapes exploring and building new  vibratory paths that helps us navigate through a vast web of interconnected frequencies and rhythms, creating unique and intimate spaces for dancers to take part in a sonic experience in a way that can most directly connect the body, the mind and the soul to the main source as it transforms land forms into celestial beings.

It has been a very long way since the beginning of this piece but I am very happy to have it finally released! Always thankful for all the trust and understanding from all the artists involved and every who has been supporting, lovers and protectors of this journey on the alluring coherence between sound and creation.
