Michel Baumann (@soulphiction-aka-jackmate) takes a breather from his Soulphiction production alias and resurrects his Jackmate moniker for a vinyl only release on @18437, delivering three tracks of fresh tech rollers stuffed with the funk and sway of early house.

@raiders_records has presented something really special here.  While we absolutely love this track by @jpeglove, we must emphasize that this entire 2-volume release is a top notch pivotal endeavor highlighting a nascent shift toward club culture being ruled more firmly under the female sphere.  

'Queens of Club' pays tribute to 'Queens of Baltimore', an early Bmore Club 12” from 2001 featuring recorded vocals by: Mz. Thang, Kotton the Cutie and Lady Shaunda.  (Side note:  Posse Up tried to contact these artists recently, if anyone knows how to reach them please let us know!).  

While 'Queens of Baltimore' put the women at the forefront, it was still distributed and produced by men.  Raider’s' 'Queens of Club' pays tribute to this early achievement while simultaneously 1UP’ing it as a project that is completely produced and managed by women.  The stereotype that producing is a man’s domain can be put to feckin rest as is a testament of the quality of this endeavor.      

While this follows the tradition of pioneering female producers – least we forget about Kemistry and Storm who co-founded Metalheadz, not to mention DJ Rap – it also serves as a reminder – since the very fact that such a project remains a rarity in 2020 mans that there is still werk 2 do.  

Posse Up salutes and welcomes female producers, label owners, deejays, and emcees.  We feel strongly that music is multi-dimensional, and that added depth is desperately needed, whether that's grounded in gender, sex, ethnicity, culture, social status or entire MF’ing species (yo shouts out to the extraterrestrial transgendered).  The more depth the better, especially in club genres that exhibit raw sexuality, such as: bmore / jersey club, miami bass, ghetto tech, ghetto house, vogue, etc., or music inspired by these genres.

Listening to Linja’s debut LP makes one think of Polish director Yuri Norstein’s gloomy melancholic (yet playful) movies, or perhaps just of a rainy day, or Chopin.

Velvet Noise is a collection of 7 experimental pieces made by Linja sometime around 2016-2017, using drum ma- chines and a lot of modular synthesisers.
The album is woven with Simple melodies that crack through the squeaks and the bleeps, eery pads that fill the voids all sorts of FX.
The atmosphere becomes filled with tension when it is playing in the room, as if something is clearly about to happen.

Linja’s album is not so easy to describe, and yet due to its coherence and storytelling it has a certain feel and per- sonality of a good book rather than just a record.
“It transcends its existence as a record”.
