Technique Recordings have got previous when it comes to bringing Central and Eastern European artists to our attention. Now, from Ukraine, it's time to meet Tapolsky & VovKING. The more switched on amongst you will remember them from their intriguing formula-twisting excursions on the Technique “Summer 2017” LP. Now, they're back with a four-track EP and the space to demonstrate exactly what they're all about.

As the opening piano riff of “Running” hands the melody to that heart-wrenching vocal, then onto the fragile Rhodes, it's clear we're witnessing assured musicianship at work. This is DnB, sure, the punch and snap of the kick and snare combining with heavyweight bass. But, there's a loose experimental feel to it that means this tune could just as easily be the product of a live electronica band as studio-bound drum 'n' bass scientists.

And the live feeling continues as we move into “Deep Disco”. Deep, reverberant plucks of bass lay the foundation for keys and layered vocal samples. Then Tapolsky & VovKING deliver us into soulful chord changes and call-and-response patterns. They've even reinterpreted the standard build-drop-breakdown structure of DnB, integrating the form with layout of traditional songwriting. This is uncompromisingly unique, but no less dancefloor orientated for that.

Tapolsky & VovKING go even further down their musical rabbit-hole in “Flame”. As volumes and dynamics modulate in a way you haven't quite heard before, and little tension-building moments of silence appear as sounds fall away, we're drawn deep into these producers' world. It has to be heard to be understood.

The intro of “Cosmic Symmetry” sends us into a whirlpool of influences and styles. There's neo-soul, R&B, maybe even UKG in there, but that quirky live-sounding synth-work takes us somewhere that's not quite any of those things. And, under it all, there's the pulse of bassline and beat that mean that, whatever else it might be, this is very definitely drum 'n' bass music.

Let's be crystal clear. You haven't heard DnB done like this before. Tapolsky & VovKING are coming to the table with influences and ideas that are daring and challenging, but, are also emotive and engaging. They've called this EP “Modern Innovation”, and it's proved itself well worthy of that title.

When one of Technique Recordings' new signings drops their first release, there's, understandably, a buzz of anticipation among DnB heads. After all, this is the label of Drumsound & Bassline Smith, Tantrum Desire, Document One, and L Plus, just to name a few. So, the duo formerly known as Glass Cobra, even more formerly known as Dubba Jonny & Russla, now going by the name No Concept, has a lot of heritage to live up to.

Of course, Technique's A&R skills are as sharp as ever. That's clear right from the intro of this EP's first track, “Nowhere to Hide”. As Arte's vocals rise and blaze over atmospheric chords and shifting patterns of arpeggio, we're drawn inexorably into No Concept's sonic world. And, trust, the title means what it says. There's no hiding from the vicious lash of those snares and thorax-shattering kicks and bass when this beast drops. Hazardous material.

But then there's another facet of the No Concept sound displayed in “Fingers”. As the shadowlands of the first few bars unfold before us, there's an unsettling uncertainty about where this track might be taking us. And that pitch-bending build delivers us somewhere just a bit different from the average. There's an stridently insistent riff that draws inspiration from jump-up, but with a serrated-edge low-end power that makes it something else entirely. This is going to earn wheel-ups wherever it's played.

“4 Dayz” is another twist to the tale. A minimally percussive intro, punctuated with dark tinges of vocal, sets the tone. Then there's the heart-stopping drama of that drop-out before the inevitable hammer-blow. This hearkens back to classic techstep, rolling breaks supported by a two-step pattern that punches huge holes through the frequency range. All that, with a high-energy warping and modulating bassline that is going to keep the dancefloor enthralled.

Closing out proceedings, we've got “Waste My Time”. With its ever-rising layers of percussive synths in the intro, those 4/4 claps, and floating vocal samples, this could almost be a reconfiguration of the hardcore formula. The drop is all about the catchiest of bassline hooks drives us onwards, with stabs and a sheen of reverberating atmospherics filling out the soundscape. All of this, supported by the neck-breaking drums that No Concept have already, even within this EP, made a staple of their sound.

So, welcome to No Concept. In this collection of four tracks they've laid out a benchmark. These guys have proven their ability to deliver forward-thinking DnB aimed squarely at the dancefloor. And you know there's going to be a lot more where that came from.

The Technique bosses are back with a four-track EP containing ammo straight from their tried and tested dubplate armoury.

The title track “Booyaka” opens in an unsettling landscape of retro sci fi tension, as pads and bleeps ride the building percussion. As the tune drops, surging waves of bass crash into the dance, and as Drumsound & Bassline Smith add evolving layers of breaks into the mix to hype things further, it's game over.

“Unity” is infused with the flavours of jazz, soul, and funk as horns, keys, guitar licks, and vocal stabs set the tone in the intro. Just in case you were expecting some laid-back liquid groove, though, DBS quickly dispel that idea with a kick-build that delivers us right into high-energy mode. Those infectiously bubbling basslines and rolling drums could only have come from producers steeped in the jungle foundations.

Next, the soaringly epic opening of “Straight from the Underground”, made from subtle hints of percussion and sweeping choral timbres delivers a hands in the air moment that's going to have deejays everywhere wheeling up to run it from the top. When we're thrown an angst-inducing discord and a dramatic build that drops into twisting and modulating bassline savagery, absolute banger status is assured.

“Mash it Up” is a stone-cold killer. Militant drums and anthemic orchestral chords immediately let us know this is warrior music. As the eponymous vocal clip leads us into the drop, we're assaulted with a multi-strike combo of evolving basslines and break-laden drums.

Drumsound & Bassline Smith's precision-tooled basses and high-energy break deployment are well known, and their craft really comes to the fore on this EP. There's high-level studio science at work here, married perfectly with a natural, raw, junglist vibe. That's why the “Booyaka EP” is going to connect with real DnB heads everywhere.

The next Technique Takeover is coming.

On February 15th, the Technique Recordings crew take over The Cause in London, with a cross-spectrum drum 'n' bass line-up helmed by label founders Drumsound & Bassline Smith.

And, after the success of their debut FABRICLIVE event towards the end of last year, this has got roadblock written all over it.

As well as heavyweights drawn from the upper echelons of the Technique roster, including Tantrum Desire, No Concept, and multi-talented vocalist and emcee Youngman, the stage will be graced by huge artists from all corners of the drum 'n' bass.

One of the scene's founding fathers, Grooverider will be bringing his dubplate arsenal to bear, and Formation boss DJ SS will take us back to the roots with a jungle set.

Repping Low Down Deep Recordings is jump-up master Logan D, who'll be rolling out with the record-breaking mic man Harry Shotta.

Added to that, Document One, the guys behind some of the biggest tracks of 2018 will bring their brand of fire to the decks. Plus, regular Technique host, Toddlah will be back to shell down the mic as only he can.

And, as if that wasn't enough, there's still a Special Guest to announce.

Technique Recordings head-honcho’s @DrumsoundandBasslineSmith have had a massive year; adding to this their remix of @KennyKen’s iconic track “Everyman” and they’re looking to continue their explosive takeover of 2019. 

War on Silence debuted to the drum and bass scene in November 2018 and since this point they’ve had a consistent stream of stellar releases - spearheading outputs from the likes of Heist, Funtcase, Malux, Teddy Killerz, its creator Crissy Criss and many more.
