Critical Music boss man Kasra spends most of his days A&R’ing one of electronic music’s most revered record labels whilst playing drum & bass records in clubs across the world most weekends. Having announced his return to the studio with one of the biggest names in D&B, Enei, the pair are now ready to unleash their latest EP ahead of their debut at EDC Las Vegas, one of the world’s largest electronic music festivals. Will Hine AKA Whiney is a prime example of how Med School keep to their key ethos - to bring through and nurture the very best in the next generation of producers. At just 21 years old, he’s already gained a reputation amongst esteemed tastemakers, including label boss London Elektricity and BBC Radio 1’s Friction, for contributing stand-out moments on various compilations. Take 'Komodo' on ‘Hospitality 2016’, 'Nightfall' on ‘Ten Years Of Med School' and 'Guardian' on S.P.Y’s ‘Hospital Mixtape’ to start. Now two years on Whiney steps into the limelight with his own artist defining, solo EP ‘Stranger Tides’.

Opener 'Moondance' paves the way bringing high-energy to the surface. If ‘Teddy’s Gate’, released on the Skrillex founded Nest HQ, tugged your heart strings then roll onto title track ‘Stranger Tides’ with spacey vocal textures and ice-cold synths. Fans of his 2016 high-flyer ‘Komodo’ will fall hard for its brutal brother ‘On The Rocks’. Fearless bass with a sneak of trance-esque intensity matches up with his new techy tornado ‘Onyx’ - dancefloor obliteration is unavoidable with these two.

Whiney’s productions are built on solid foundations, his love for the creative process spreads throughout, fuelling his tracks with an array of cheeky quirks. His DJ sets also bring that surefire element of fun to the dancefloor. He's been packing in huge crowds world over, receiving a warm welcome in Europe at Med School label nights, Liquicity showcases and the massive D+B-centric festival Let It Roll.

In 2016, Document One showed us that they've got their own way of doing things. Equal parts of hip-hop, tech, funk and jazz combine into a flavour that's got musicality, individuality and, always, dancefloor energy. No wonder we've all got used to seeing their name at the pinnacle of the DnB download charts and in the setlists of most of the scene's top DJs. So, is it more of the same for 2017?

Well, the intro of “The Rhythm” might suggest that we're going down a more chilled route. We're in a reverberant, almost dubby soundscape, as stabs and percussive hits echo in the background while a dialogue sample tells us about the philosophy of rhythm. There's that Document One staple in those hints of brass, but, really, there's no sign of what this track is about to deliver.

There's certainly no indication of the utter filth we're about to be dropped into. Pounding, heavyweight drums stomp any chill-out vibes into oblivion. Meanwhile a gritty, serrated bassline cuts through the atmosphere with its edge of distortion. Document One's productions have always been hard, but “The Rhythm” takes things to another level. This is going to take some heads off whenever it's dropped.

So, it seems that Document One have still got more up their sleeve than they've shown up to now. The crisp cleanness they've demonstrated in previous releases has been supplemented by all-out aggression. If these producers are starting 2017 off with this level of militant violence, then who knows where they might take things next? Better pay close attention.
