It's sunshine time again. The time when we need a new D&B soundtrack to score our festivals, carnivals, pool parties and barbecues. And you'd struggle to find anyone better qualified to curate that soundtrack than Technique's bosses Drumsound & Bassline Smith. Just a quick glance at their immense back catalogue of anthemic releases or their packed international bookings diary is enough to demonstrate that they know exactly how to bring those summertime vibes.

Things kick off in suitably monumental fashion with a cut from the head honchos themselves, “I Need Somebody”. If you were looking out from a festival stage at a sea of excited hands in the air, this tune's searing vocal hook and unrelenting waves of bass would suit that scene perfectly. And, of course, this album contains a lethal dosage of similarly colossal tracks. For example, MaxNRG enlists a quirky vocal from Marianna to boost the hype-levels on “Headshot” and recent signing Kronology delivers the driving and euphoric “Untouchable”. Plus, there are some sizeable contributions to the big-room roll call from a few names you won't have seen on Technique before, like Oder's “Closer” and T-Phonic & Deadman's “Show Me the Way”.

But summer's not all about the shades-on daytime raving, we need some choice sunset material too for when things get a little darker. Document One and Spectrem exemplify this beautifully with the laid-back and jazzy “Falling” and the Kyphosis-laced “Fade” respectively. Helsinki's liquid maestros LAOS pass through to drop “City Lights” and “Belong”, and Tantrum Desire treats us to the effervescent “Sea Breeze”. For when things get darker still, there are tracks like the technoid, percussive world-unto-itself of Salaryman & Dark Machine's “Night Shift”. Guys like Conspire and Brian Brainstorm bring some full-on jungle, and the whole compilation is peppered with alternative sounds like Digital's dub workout “Groove Together”.

The thirty-one tracks here represent a cross-section of the mighty, multi-stranded, multi-form D&B scene and what it can do for summer 2015. There are names you'll know and names you might not know yet. There are huge mainstream anthems and shadow-bound subtleties. There are tunes for midday and tunes for four in the morning. And for four in the afternoon the next day. Ultimately, this isn't the sound of the summer, this is all the many different sounds of the summer put together on one album. So, the soundtrack's sorted, time to go out and have a summertime that's worthy of it!

It takes a certain kind of artist to make a successful album. It's a different prospect from a series of two- or four-track releases. In D&B, it takes a producer whose got a deep musical understanding and a many facets to their style so they can reconfigure to constantly hold our attention. It takes a producer who's got a story to tell and a journey through which to guide their listeners. Anyone who's been keeping up with L Plus's work over the last few years will recognise that he's one artist who fits that description precisely.

So, here's the first taste of his forthcoming debut album, “Hideout”.

“Timelapse” takes us straight into IMAX mode. The wide-open panorama conjured up by the atmospherics and the expanding percussive hits at the beginning of the track set the scene. The build keeps things crisp and clear, with L Plus showing how to create anticipation out of just a few expertly-programmed elements. And then the rowdy stomping drop, featuring immense grinding sweeps of bass, delivers on that build perfectly. And, of course, things don't stop there. You're going to want to let this one run right to the end, to take in the full majesty of the visceral deconstruction of the tune in the extended outro.

Then, we enter a twisted world of B-movie sci-fi with “Creature Must Die”. Dissonant pads and reverberant drums back up the eponymous dialogue sample in the intro, building to a stripped-back robot funk bass drop. This is far from being everything that L Plus has to offer in this track, though. The deftly executed builds and riffs, deploying discord to powerfully tension-increasing effect, bind the track together creating a wave of movement which belies the deceptively simple beat and bassline pattern. This is a stepper which is sure to find a home in the arsenal of many discerning selectors.

Ever since L Plus landed on Technique Recordings he's been consistently impressive. Connoisseurs will have detected the subtle musical brain at work even in his most rhythm-driven floor-fillers. And, those same connoisseurs will already be getting hyped for “Hideout”. As this first salvo demonstrates, it's going to be something monumental.

The bosses are back to show us how it's done. Seemingly more prolific than ever, with releases on multiple labels in recent months, Drumsound & Bassline Smith have returned to their home turf with something brand new. You'll have already heard this dealing out some damage on Friction's Radio 1 show, and now it's been unleashed.

“Shutdown” opens with the dark horns and meditative chimes of a horror soundtrack. So far, so tense. But then we're taken on a series of unexpected detours which serve to build anticipation even further. A discordant arpeggio filters in. Then, a blast of bass stamps its authority. This melds into a riser which is the final signal that the drop is nigh. We've already been taken on a journey by these morphs and shifts before the track even delivers its bassline and beat payload.

Then the drop is dominated by that arpeggiated figure, now laid over a foundation of a poundingly-percussive bassline. This tune's unrelentingly driving, and as a series of sixteen bar switch-ups keep the energy high, it's only the system-glitch transition into the sparse and shadowy breakdown that will give the rave even a moment's respite. It's intense, stomping D&B that's going to give any dancefloor a workout.

There aren't many who can test the longevity and workrate of the artists that make up Drumsound & Bassline Smith. And “Shutdown” is the most recent in a series of releases which prove that not many can test their sheer rave-wrecking abilities either.
