When Technique Recordings bosses Drumsound & Bassline Smith come with a fresh release, they've got some big expectations to fulfil. True heads will know that their roots were firmly planted back in the old skool of nineties rave culture. And, this millennium, they've built and sustained a reputation as architects of the big room style that's seen drum and bass explode in popularity. So, how are they going to live up to that this time?

Well, “The Truth” promises great things from the outset. A panoramic landscape is laid out before us, with dunes of unforgiving percussive sounds overcast by clouds of minor key tonalities and dark-child dialogue. It's the quiet before the riot, punctured by an alarm call signal flare which sparks things into life. Then the drop delivers a straight-up punch-up between bass and treble, as call and response patterns merge and collide to create an unrelenting groove. This is the EDM paradigm delivered with a junglist mentality and rarely-seen layers of subtlety to satisfy the listener as well as the raver.

“Outlaw Renegade” teleports us straight to the wild west on some distant technologically-advanced planet. The intro lays out a scene of the deserted main street where building percussion and feedback sweeps are the harbingers of the gangsta vibes about to ride through. The drop is constructed around road-hard drums, which provide a rock-solid foundation for the bassline to go to work. And that low-end drives through with sub-shattering force, creating a wave to overdose even the most hardcore bass-addict.

We all know that Drumsound & Bassline Smith deliver nothing but big tunes. The two tracks on this release serve as a reminder that underpinning that floor-filling, rave-filling, arena-filing reputation, are some seriously impressive musical and technical skills. These pieces are cinematic in ambition and attention to detail and that means they're going to be drawn for time and time again by knowledgable DJs across the globe.

Two years on from his debut LP from RAM Records, Rene LaVice returns with his second long-player, Play With Fire.

Perhaps the Canadian's most stylistically diverse work to date, the 14-track album offers liquid rollers and murky steppas alongside earth-shattering tracks destined to be future RAM favourites.

Appropriately titled 'Honk Honk Honk Honk' (you'll see what we mean when you play the stream), today's Debut Transmission from Rene combines tight percussion and rugged bass to devastating effect. Completed by a twisted Persian vibe and the titular, evacuation-style 'Honk', the track is available to stream here.

T-Phonic & Deadman are the most recent additions to Technique Recordings’ roster, off the back of their sunshine-drenched contributions to the label’s compilations last year. But those summertime vibes aren’t the only thing these two have to offer. Way before they teamed up, both producers had racked up a list of credits to rival almost anyone. Across his many incarnations T-Phonic has chalked up support from deejays as diverse as Hype, Bobby Friction and Fearne Cotton, and Deadman, in his DJ (Al) Storm guise, has become a certified hardcore legend. So, which of their eclectic production angles are they drawing for this time?

Well, with Scare Tactics, T-Phonic & Deadman have wasted no time in making their presence felt. A sinister speech about humanity’s propensity to believe in ghosts sets the tone, underlaid with neuro (and neurotic) low-end twists of sound and just enough percussion to keep anticipation at maximum. Cinematic strings ratchet up the tension even further as the dialogue morphs into FX’ed insanity. Then there’s that drop. Ultra- clean and sharp beats, an irresistible arpeggio in the low-mid, driving instant-classic stabs and serpentine, writhing bass make this guaranteed reload material. This is going to become a deejay weapon of choice for a long time to come.

The second track is a VIP twist on Reflections, from Technique’s Summer 2016 album. The original took the tropes of old skool rave, the breaks, the keys, the euphoric chords, the soaring vocal samples, and reconfigured them into a perfect summertime roller. This version takes the same elements and does something almost completely different. The intro keeps that classic hands-in-the-air vibe, but as it builds you’d better get those hands down ready to shock out properly. The bouncy synth ricocheting off the funk- laden bassline is all new and is going to cause some serious dancefloor carnage. So watch out.

So, what have we learned about Technique’s new signings? Mainly that you absolutely cannot predict what angle they’re going to attack from. The one constant is their rock-solid production, giving us crisp-as-you- like beats and rib-rattling bass every time. But, as you’d expect from two producers with their backgrounds, they can deliver anything from soul to savagery on a whim. Just hold on and enjoy the ride. T-Phonic & Deadman have arrived.

The mass of supplicants prostrated just beyond its twisted paws, their pathetic mewling pleasantly caressing the towering feline fiend’s ears as they expressed their divine agony. Drinking up the delicious earmilk of their pain, it reclined languidly in its glorious pedestal; a mass of flesh and sinews with the fine carved bones from the countless many condemned to this realm of eternal torment. Its three eyes rolled apathetically to fall upon one particular beggar, drained of almost all remaining life from her years pennance, spent at the foot of the infernal throne, worshipping the glory of pain in all its truth and crying for salvation. The utter futility of this endeavor suddenly dawned on the great cat, as the constancy of myriad calls made for escape fell upon his ears at once. Suddenly annoyed by this ever-present sound, he reached out, spearing the pathetic being before him with a claw and flinging her from into rock and into the depths of the molten river below. His eyes watched her form ignite and fade in the heat, her soul joining others to be swept into its current on a journey to be reborn as pitiful lesser devils elsewhere in the plane. How benevolent an act, the cat thought to itself, freeing the pitiful creature from her suffering for a brief moment and more even - giving her the opportunity of such an esteemed metamorphosis. Even though the pathetic fiend she would be reborn as would hold not even a candle to his own magnificence, it would still be a marked improvement against the limits of her prior flesh. Sated by his own thoughts, he leaned forward once, rotating his vast ears to better drink in the fresh desperate energy of the remaining supplicants. Its hideous mouth opened to a wide, sharp smile, revealing cruelly serrated fangs that shone unnaturally with a umbral hue. “A reward for my benevolence,” he thought as he plucked the nearest wretch from the rock with a single talon, his pupils sharpening with focussed malevolence as he tossed them into his fur-lined maw. Satisfied, his hunger temporarily sated, there was but one thing left to do. He would take a nap.

The ZOMBIE CATS return to the label that set the fire on their ferocious project back in 2014, placing them on a fierce trajectory of furiously kinetic releases that have brought them to the present, their most pointed assault on the eardrums yet with the WORLD’S END EP on EATBRAIN. With the title track tearing out of the mouth of hell with slower bpm but highly charged energy, further establishing the newly forming neurowave genre, the cats make a bold statement from the outset.
