Foundations is a side-project from our main Aftermath events – from the blurb (that I wrote, so I can get away with calling it that!), it's "a night providing a wider range of musical variety than Aftermath, geared towards providing a platform for new/upcoming artists and for established acts who want a chance to play something outside their better-known genres." In the spirit of the night, I decided to do something I'd been wanting to do for a while – a full 1.5hr set of Japanese Tech Dance. I've slipped the odd track into a mix every now and again, but given the generally low-traction that Tech Dance has had over here in the UK (barring a few days in the sun when it was picked up by Kamui et al) I really honestly wasn't sure how the crowd – even a friendly home crowd – would take 90 minutes of it. For the uninitiated, the genre is delightfully odd – in structure, it's intelligently-crafted  "techy" hard dance with extreme attention to detail that borrows elements from multiple genres (from within hard dance and the wider scene beyond, sometimes in the space of a few bars), beautiful, sublime and ridiculous in equal parts. In short, it's a wonderful antidote to the lack of creativity that pervades the Western commercial music industry - a malaise that includes some of the more monolithic, long-in-the-tooth labels that sit at the end of the table of the underground scene like a grumpy, overfed and fleabitten dog that should have been euthanised years ago.

In the end the set went down much better than I'd dared hope possible – I keep on being pleasantly surprised by the openness of our local crowd to new musical horizons. There were a few confused faces (understandably so at certain points), but mostly lots of dancing and big grins, and a small retinue of clubbers who absolutely NEEDED to know what the HELL that just was and where could they get some more?! – and to those people, if you're reading this now, your enthusiasm and excitement made my night: どうも ありがとうございます

Derrick May is one of our main headliners at Rejected's Amsterdam Dance Event 2012 night at Studio 80, 18th of october.
Since my early dj days, I consider Derrick May as a huge inspiration, and in particular this dj set. Broadcasted live in 1996 from the legendary Chemistry night at Escape, Amsterdam. It was recorded from midnight radio by my partner in crime Edwin Oosterwal who borrowed me the cassette tape which I never gave back to him, which reminds me I should do that sometime soon.

In this mix, Derrick May shows us that in 1996 dance wasn't pigeonholed to one style or sound. He mixes Moodymann's groovy deephouse with Jeff Mills and Surgeon's raw techno. He goes from Donna Summer's disco to Tyree Cooper's jacking electronic funk, from Masters of Work's new york house to Ian Pooley's epic chord techno. All of this is mixed in a fast and skillful pace, a style that so clearly carries Derrick's signature.

There's some truly magical moments in this mix, how he get's out of Surgeon's 'Syllable' into Global Communication's 'Sensorama' at 1:09 leaves me speechless..

Even though by now I know most of the record he plays here, there's still a few I've been looking since the very first time I heard this mix. Would be great to get the tracklist completed, any help is greatly appreciated!

After performing at First Avenue located in Minnesota, respectably known for Prince’s forefront of music venues, I decided to release the recorded mix as part of the Submerge Live series, fourth edition. Her breakthrough came when her debut EP hit the number one spot on the Beatport Hard Techno charts, earning recognition from industry legends like Ben Sims, DJ Rush, James Ruskin, A.Paul, and ANNE.

In 2021, she was invited by Ben Sims to contribute to a special various artists EP on his iconic Symbolism label, and in 2024, she returned with a solo EP on the same legendary imprint. She’s also had releases on respected labels such as Naked Lunch Records, Compound, Black Out Audio, Black Square Recordings, 3MOON Records, Unknown Territory, and many more.

As a DJ, Lisa’s passion has always been vinyl. She has warmed up for Ben Sims and performed alongside industry legends such as Player, Gez Varley (LFO), Tommy Four Seven, Mike Humphries , Dextro , David Meiser , A.Paul , Neil Landstrumm, CJ Bolland, Lady Machine, and Dave Clarke. She has also contributed to respected podcasts such as Mastertraxx and Naked Lunch Records.
