Coincidence.101 - 03. Remy-x: The Body

Layton Giordani steps up for his first solo EP of 2018.

In terms of pedigrees, it doesn’t get finer than Layton Giordani. The Brooklyn-born DJ/producer followed up his lauded debut album of 2017, with a collaboration with Danny Tenaglia to close out the year and marked the summer of 2018 with a three-way collaboration with Adam Beyer and Green Velvet, ‘Space Date’. The period has been a big one for Layton personally, also. From humble beginnings in his native NYC as an Output resident, to being thrust into the bustle of the European club and festival circuit, he’s enjoyed a stint living in Amsterdam, growing and developing over this time. All these experiences have had a fundamental influence on him and his music. The four-track EP ‘Phase II’ represents a new chapter for this exciting talent.

Beginning with ‘New York to Amsterdam’, a track that draws inspiration from a classic by Yves Deruyter, Layton’s work packs a memorable punch as tough acidic undertones and brain scrambling synth effects undulate raising the intensity, making it a perfect opener for Adam Beyer when he played Berghain earlier this year. ‘Body Language’ follows, a track written when Layton was scrubbed out of touring for a month courtesy of a shattered elbow from a skating accident. Not wasting the downtime, he’s crafted a cut that’s sleek, sexy and smart, with a seductive vocal and rousing melodic riff that runs throughout. ‘Black Mirror’, stays true to its dystopic name, a stomping rave cut that pummels dancefloors with a menacing lead synth that’s purpose built for the cold months ahead. ‘Enter the Stratosphere’ is steely electro-tinged techno paired with atmospheric licks of melody, awhile maintaining the artist’s trademark low-end chug. A classy conclusion to an EP from one of techno’s brightest talents.

Hidden Empire is the brainchild of Branko Novakovic and Niklas Schäfers, who describe their musical vision as an 'impulsive, deeply moving soundscape, using the very essential and deepest elements of House and Techno'. Having dropped vital releases on the likes of Stil Vor Talent and Suara in the past couple of years, the boys now release Caterpillar - four tracks of sleek, purpo- seful techno on Oliver Huntemann's ever dependable Senso Sounds label. Lead track 'Caterpillar' is a lean, focussed and deadly example of their craft - synths are laser guided, while the rhythm
is pulsating and hypnotic. Similarly, 'Jack Haze' cuts away all the excess and hones in on a purity of purpose - slick beats and urgent percussion make this a standout cut. '20000V' is cut from
the same cloth, a dance floor-ready destroyer with tonnes of kinetic energy and perfectly pitched dramatic tension. Lastly, 'Tribute' completes the quartet - deep vibes and a wonky off kilter synth line add to the sense of euphoria.

The latest release from Tash's Movement Recordings welcomes Circle Of Life to the label for his debut EP. Based in Belgrade, the Serbian artist owns an impressive discography highlighted by releases on Beat Boutique, BeatFreak Recordings, Suara and Sudbeat
Music. His unique combination of progressive house and techno has also caught the attention of world class DJs Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Warren. Now making his much anticipated Movement Recordings
debut Circle Of Life presents his 'Black Light' EP.

Known for his peak time creations, Circle Of Life continues to explore that ethos on the title cut
'Black Light'. Dark and dramatic from the outset it's DJ friendly intro is complemented with
tension filled percussion and haunting vocal edits. A short break brings astral effects and pulsating arps, before dropping out into a perfectly contoured low end. Warped and wonky in all the right ways, it's crunchy rhythms add mightily to the narrative, while ghostly overlays bring just the right ethereal touch. Across two breaks the second act is a lesson in building drama and tension, with devilish modulation and timely transitions uniting for a deadly drop and powerful finale.

The second selection 'Istina' follows a similar sonic ethos but with a greater techno sensibility. Beginning with punchy beats and crisp design the piece moves forward with a chunky momentum. It's foreboding groove gets nicely complemented with frayed percussion and icy pads, before modular swells add further fuel to the rhythmic fire. Beautifully crafted, tasteful tones highlight the break, fully saturating your pleasure centres while shifting energy onwards to
an exhilarating third act.

The release concludes with 'Whyred' which presents a deeper more afro inspired storyboard. Beginning with exotic drums and cross cultural motifs, it's organic appeal quickly captures your imagination. Waves of astral synths descend over the framework, eventually giving way to a fresh rhythmic theme and buzzing tension. Percussive flurries continue to bend the narrative as fiery overlays trail into the final break, sealing it's dramatic appeal. There is also an instrumental version included for the less vocally inclined. It rounds out a superb Movement Recordings debut for Circle Of Life, continuing what has been an incredible year for the talented Serbian
artist.
