BIO:

HYPERKARMA—the DJ alias of Minneapolis’s Jennifer Waege—knows from dark music. A regular at two of the Twin Cities’ most notable club nights, Dark Energy and Gothess, she began spinning in 2003: “Industrial, noise, ambient, goth, new wave, powernoise, stuff on the darker end of the spectrum,” she says, usually between bands for shows she promoted in Reno. When she moved back to the Twin Cities in 2014, she figured on DJing less, until receiving an invitation to play at a hot new Minneapolis party called Dark Energy—her debut was in 2016—where the DJs blended “that old school industrial sound” Hyperkarma loved with techno.

 

“It was an event that I was really digging,” she says. “The dark beacon of techno was calling my name and I didn’t even realize it was out there, you know? It was an immediate attraction: ‘Oh my god, you can play both of them together?!’”

 MIX NOTES:

For this mix, Hyperkarma has delved into straight-up techno. “Getting involved in the techno lifestyle—it was like jumping into the deep end of the pool. And I decided to swim. Nobody pushed me. I jumped into this willingly. This is the music that speaks to me. This music has changed me. Finding techno was like coming home to me.”

BIO

Originally from London, UK, Andy Grant is a Washington, DC based DJ and record collector with over 25 years experience behind the decks. Predominantly spinning all-vinyl sets drawing from his diverse and ever-growing collection, his varied style is inspired by over 30 years on the dance floor. During the nineties he played in various clubs and parties around London. After moving to Scotland in 1998, he spent several years playing in Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow, while also helping to run The Planetsoul Network, one of the first online radio stations streaming deep, soulful house 24/7.

In 2004, Andy took a break from the scene for a number of years following a move to Washington, DC, coming out of retirement in 2011 to play clubs and parties in the thriving DC underground house scene. 

Andy is the founder of DC House Grooves, whose mission is to provide trusted information about DC’s underground electronic music community, helping to raise the profile of local DJs, producers and promoters. Along with his wife  Katrina Mir and Ramirez, Andy is resident of the DC House Grooves Show on DJ Jus-Ed‘s Underground Quality Radio, based in Berlin. You can catch the  DC House Grooves Show every two weeks on Saturday nights at 10pm ET on the Underground Quality Live YouTube channel.

CX580 is a new creative alias of Damon Bradley, one that protects, elevates, and nurtures old school trance, some modern takes on trance, and the intimate connections trance has with techno. CX580 is light to complement the dark spaces of techno. CX580 aims to unify all the genres under the "electronic" genre, with a mind towards elevating the hearts and spirits of the last remaining souls on the dancefloor. CX580 down-to-earth, unapologetic and relentless with his presentation of trance, hardtrance and techno in between.

Damon Bradley is a veteran electronic music enthusiast, DJ and promoter. Originally from Philly, Damon is the creator of TechnoFist, Katalyst, and is one of the creators of SEQUENCE.

Damon has opened for the likes of Shifted, Ben Damage, Exos, and Phase, and closed for legends such as Jeff Mills, Luke Slater, Perc, Tommy Four Seven, Headless Horseman, Stranger, Milton Bradley, and The Gods Planet. Damon's favorite spot in the lineup is closing- always wanting to leave a strong, energetic impression for the last remaining zombies on the dance floor.

Damon’s influences span a broad spectrum of electronic music, ranging from ambient to industrial techno, groovy and soulful house, and melodic progressive trance. He curates the TechnoFist Facebook Group, which was created in 2013 and now is a community that has over 3000 members.

In 2016, Damon teamed up with Ron Jackson, Jacob Knibb, Associate and Juana to form SEQUENCE, an ambitious underground techno event series in Washington DC.

Originally from Los Angeles, California, Brian GUNJACK Gibbs released a slew of seminal house, techno, proto dubstep and experimental electronic records in the early 2000s.

Having left his native USA in 1999 for Asia, our man burned through 5 continents leaving musical devastation in his wake. Eventually settling in Santiago, Chile, Gunjack diversified his body of work releasing a disco funk album under the alias ECHO PARK on Skream's Disfigured Dubz imprint and the chicago house/footwork/juke label REPOTRAX (as featured on boiler room) was born. On the more experimental side of music, Jack's DEPARTURE EXCHANGE makes waves in the Lo-Fi Hiphop world establishing a merch campaign of floppy diskette singles, VHS visualbums and cassette tape releases.

Branching out into the art world, our protagonist would go on to invest his artistic inspirations to gallery shows consisting of art installations and electronic sculptures conveying a moral and political dilemma as concept fuel for the physical exhibitions in the Cine Arte Alameda and the National Museo de Gabriela Mistral in Chile's capital.

Fast forward to 2019 and Brian is injured during the military crackdown on political upheaval in October. Spine broken and badly burned, Gunjack spent months in hospital after having titanium pins inserted. After learning to walk again and fighting through some of the darkest days of his life, Gunjack worked with the US State Department to return home to his country in order to secure his legacy as a "North American musical treasure".

Currently based in Minneapolis, Gunjack is now back in full swing with several high profile house music vinyl releases in 2022 under his Valentino Roth alias. Having rebooted his seminal "Gunjack Series" in 2021, his current "techno" releases would go on to be played and supported by Dave Clarke, Surgeon and the mythical AFX. Recently starting a vinyl label under the Planet Rhythm umbrella of sub labels, DUBWARS is currently manufacturing and scheduled for release in 2023. 

Not satisfied with treading old ground, Gunjack continues to push the boundaries by taking his early "free jazz" roots back to the forefront of his productions. Creating improvised compositions at a frantic pace using an akai MPC style drum pad and arcade buttons, many a mind has been boggled this year by the iconic "HYPERJAZZ" EP with a live video from track "Whiplash" going viral. Called "mindblowing" by UK music journalist JOE MUGGS, the video marks a personal milestone for Gunjack.

lola:de is a dj and coder from London. Some may recognise her from the infamous ‘dances at the rave’ video that provided some much needed entertainment to the dance community during the 2020 lockdown (you had to be there), while others may be more familiar with her from dj sets at various London venues such as Elektrowerkz, The Glove That Fits, Dalston Superstore and radio stations such as Voices, NetilRadio, komrad and bloop (where she is now a resident). 

Ahead of her next show at Risen festival this April, Lola has prepared a special mix for TechnoFist's final podcast that reflects her whimsical personality and diverse taste. Featuring artists such as Nubian Mindz, Shinedoe, Steve Rachmad, Cinthie, and Alarico, expect an eclectic blend of soulful, funky and hard, tooly beats.

Juana (the artist formerly known as Brdhs) is so house. Birthed from a tribe of light-skinned opera singers and children of the soul mother from the universal vibrations of the earth spirit, Juana grew up on a steady diet of smooth jazz, jheri curl funk, and prog rock, which shaped her sensibilities immeasurably. Her early musical inspirations include Hendrix, Can, Frank Zappa, Roy Ayers, Deftones, Patrick Adams, Prince, Tool, Norman Connors, RZA, Pepe Bradock, Cocteau Twins, Roxy Music, Isley Brothers, Marvin Gaye, Mtume, and a bunch of classical dudes. She began collecting records at age 4 and stealing tapes and CDs from Tower Records at around 14.

Juana has been a DC staple since 2004. Bored with her humble beginnings as a bedroom DJ spinning pulsating sweaty drug-fueled disco sessions alone in her Northside Chicago efficiency, she relocated to DC where she connected with the likes of Sam "the Man" Burns and immediately offered to carry his records around for free. This dedicated sycophancy earned her opening spots at some of the top underground house clubs in DC, such as Red, Dragonfly, and DC Sanctuary, and lots of places somewhere down on New York Avenue. Although she is generally afraid of talking with her mouth, preferring the uttering of the depths of her heart, she also caught the attention of online radio stations and played weekly shows on HandzOnRadio (BMore) and CyberJamz (Tampa), beating down office workers worldwide with her unique blend of deep house, techno, disco, rare groove, and fart noises. 

Around 2010, Juana again decided to flake on the world, going on hiatus, and robbing it of her naked and fearless genius.

A city wept.

But that very next year, she began to harken on the sweet, ethereal sounds that haunted her her entire life, making original tracks that would propel her into fame almost immediately. For one, renown UK DJ/producer Ben Sims has said of her artistry, "I don't get it," and "It's okay." This kind of acclaim has been just the beginning of her trajectory into the the souls of true heads everywhere. Her residency at Dr. Clock's, the infamous Tech Support parties, has attracted alcoholics from all throughout walking distance.

2016 and 2017 opened up many new avenues for Juana, joining forces with numerous local heavy hitters in DC, playing the Acid People party series with the likes of Ron Jackson, Damon Bradley, and Tsurugi. Juana also recently link up with TechnoFist, Void Archive, and Select DC as part of the quickly growing Sequence party series, on opening duties for Detroit's BMG, and getting muy loca closing for Discwoman (Volvox and Umfang) and Tommy Four Seven. She's also had the good fortune to open up for the likes of Rick Wade and Kai Alce, Stefan Goldman, and Pan-Pot. Watch this space!

Bio:
DC-based producer and DJ Nick Garcia has served as Sharam’s right-hand man and label manager of Yoshitoshi Recordings for three years, and as such has received a world-class education in dance music.  In 2017 he cofounded the Werk Ethic party at Ten Tigers Parlour with Ken Lazee, which pays homage to classic house and techno.  The party has since moved to U Street Music Hall and routinely packs the house.  

Nick is also an accomplished producer, with releases on Night Vision and Lifted Contingency, a recently-dropped official remix for Will Eastman, and an upcoming EP on LA’s PUZL records.

TechnoFist Podcast 074: Werk Ethic with Nick Garcia

Born in Miami with a Cuban background, Cry Baby has been strongly attracted to dance music since her earliest teen years, crashing raves since age 12 and immersing herself in the legendary South Florida dance culture of the 90s. Her growing hunger to share and perform led her to learn to DJ in her 20s, but soon found the lack of opportunities for women in her hometown stifling, so in 2010 she relocated to Brooklyn.

As soon as she landed in New York, Cry Baby wasted no time making a splash, playing a dizzying array of clubs, underground warehouses and private parties all over the city. Her own party series, House On Mute, quickly earned residencies at top clubs Submercer, Output and Le Bain, while also maintaining a strong underground presence at countless warehouse and loft spaces in Brooklyn. 

Her dancefloor selection style straddles the house-techno divide, distilling and blending them in novel and potent concoctions, with a freshness, fluidity and thrust all her own. It was in 2011 that she began quietly experimenting with her own productions, slowly but intently developing a unique tech-house alchemy with influences in minimal and deep dance flavors in equal measure. Her first track, an enchanting and heady remix of Caiwo, was released on Euphoria Records in 2015, and was followed up by a split collaboration with Derek Marin on the legendary New York imprint Nervous Records. 

With her impressive releases came the demand to bring her signature sound to international destinations, and in 2015 she completed her first European tour, dazzling audiences in Berlin, Stockholm and Prague, and she returned for a lengthier second tour in 2016, which brought her to Ibiza, Barcelona, Vienna, Luxembourg and back to Berlin for multiple performances to much acclaim. Back stateside, she has continued playing larger venues, with appearances at Mysteryland USA, Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival, and several Mixmag Lab showcases, while maintaining her deep connection to the emerging underground techno scene in Brooklyn.

Cry Baby's hustle did not go unnoticed; in 2016 she was tapped by Mixmag to join their Smirnoff Sound Collective project, which brought together a dozen of America's most intriguing up-and-coming artists in a year-long experimental talent showcase. Her experience there inspired her to create FM Elle: a female-driven record label, collective and event series meant to highlight and empower underrepresented female artists from all over America. With more tours around the world and further original releases and remixes in the works, the future is looking increasingly bright for this busy rising star.

@pureimmanence is the DJ duo of Nick Bazzano (@nmb2115) and @kiddosincere. They are residents with New York underground queer rave collective Unter, where they have been able to craft a sound that includes and entangles psychedelic techno, ambient moodscapes, and experimental electronic grooves. They also hold an eponymous Wednesday-night residency at Bossa Nova Civic Club which just celebrated its two-year anniversary this past July. Pure Immanence has been privileged to perform for and work with various rave collectives and festivals both locally and abroad, including Sustain-Release, Fourth World, Buttons, Pornceptual, and the WHOLE United Queer Festival.

Venezuelan born Berlin based Hyperaktivist it's been shaking the scene in and outside Berlin with her characteristic energetic sets, oscillating between faster Techno and House with big influence in the 90's and old school tracks.

She started working for the development of club culture in her native Venezuela since an early age, where she co founded SOLO the first club dedicated exclusively to electronic music in her hometown.
After finishing a degree on Mass Media and journalism she relocated in Berlin where she did a diploma in sound engineering at the studios of the infamous Funk Haus and were she continues working for the
development of electronic music as a resident and organiser of Mess, Mindful Electronic Sonic Selections a forward thinking club night with a focus on women and transgender artist from diverse cultural backgrounds, dedicated to the celebration of diversity and supporting DIY club culture around the world happening at Ohm and her newest, Mala Junta events with a focus on old school faster/funky techno.

Since selected as one of the Shape Platform for innovative music artists in 2016 she's been touring around Europe playing both festivals and underground spaces such as: CTM in Berlin, Uh Fest in Budapest, Amsterdam Dance event, Insomnia in Norway, Off Sonar in Barcelona, Skaņu Mežs in Riga, Red Bull Music Festival in Moscow and Brutaż in Poland, Cxema in Kyev, Herrensauna in Berlin, Fast Forward in Copenhagen to name a few.

You can find her playing from Tresor’s closings sets to the Berlin’s most renewed clubs bringing her characteristic energy and commitment to the dance floors, merging genres with ease she takes influence both in her time spent in Berlin and South America.

Sugar is a Copenhagen native, producer, DJ and co-founder of Fast Forward Productions, whose raves in the city triggered the formation of a strong, fast techno focused community in the city before going on to achieve international recognition. Fast Forward's sound and Sugar's sound are one and the same: mercilessly fast, groovy, melodic and pounding. Sugar recently released his debut EP, No Sex Only Feelings, on Repro's Euromantic label, and he also contributed two tracks to Kulør 001, the acclaimed first release on Courtesy's Kulør label.

Brothers Lund&Rønde co-founded the BunkerBauer collective with DJ Ibon and Lasse Vind and the pair are also behind the new label V.A.L.I.S., which has been set up to release new hard trance, much of it made by the scene's best-known techno producers working under pseudonyms. The brothers have been DJ'ing together for over a decade now, and have honed their own signature sound which pivots on hard 90's techno, acid and trance and a multitude of offshoot styles.

Born in Newfoundland and currently based out of Toronto where she was exposed to the beloved warehouse culture that helped shape her as an artist and also led to her eponymous residency at Format. 

AADJA is now one of the most highly sought after DJs in Toronto and has been booked to play alongside some of the most celebrated names in techno including Marcel Dettmann, Amelie Lens, Oscar Mulero, Derrick May, Ancient Methods, Function, Headless Horseman, Mike Parker, Perc, Sterac, Courtesy, Scuba, Henning Baer, Anetha, Hector Oaks, Reeko and Volvox.

Besides being an active member of the Toronto circuit, AADJA has also performed at the iconic Synoid party at Griessmuehle in Berlin. 

On the production front 2018 also saw her debut release on the esteemed Belgian imprint, Coincidence Records. In 2019, AADJA is set to release more original music on both vinyl & digital and is ramping up for one of her busiest years to date.

With his roots deep in the Copenhagen DIY music scene Joachim Palsby aka DJ TOOL has been playing and collecting different music for more than a decade. After many years of playing punk, metal and electronic noise music, he slowly developed an interest in dance music/techno. For years he has been roaming the international dance floors as a loyal dancer and ended up learning the skills of all vinyl Djing. DJ TOOL is a classic example of a Dj that merges directly from the floor to the booth. His sets are authentic and the sound is oldschool, hard and fast but always funky and uplifting. While living in Berlin he met and instantly connected with his Venezuelan partner in crime, Hyperaktivist. Together they decided to create a party with a sound they felt was missing in the Berlin techno scene. Mala Junta is a smaller intimate party with focus on old school, faster and harder techno that is merging in Berlin at the moment. With friends and family in the Dj and party collectives of Copenhagen, Fast Forward Productions, BunkerBauerand Endurance his connection to the underground techno scene of his hometown is still very strong .There is no doubt about that the Berlin based,DJ TOOL is a part of Copenhagen techno and knows where he belongs 

Co-founder and resident at the Copenhagen underground rave series Endurance, Ezy is a techno DJ, producer and a time-served mainstay on the floor as well as in Copenhagen's alternative music underground. Ezy is one of many artists on the city's fast techno scene with a history in the punk scene, and in the four years since he took to electronic music, he has built a reputation for delivering all-vinyl sets of agile, percussive, banging old-school techno. He has played in Germany and Sweden recently, along with a steady stream of gigs in his home city, and is also building towards releasing his own music.

Trained on the fast-techno floors of Copenhagen, HORNS has the city's signature sound running through their rave DNA, channeling years of lessons learned as a dancer into the DJ booth. HORNS is attracted to fast and hard styles of dance music and in their sets and mixes they harness them to create bright, emotional and maximal energies.

"They Told Us Summer Is An Attitude" is named after the rave series "Summer Is Not A Season It's An Attitude", which was held by Fast Forward Productions in Copenhagen in the spring and summer of 2017. At these raves HORNS got to know almost everyone they know today, and this mix is dedicated to those friends. 

HORNS is a resident at the fast techno party Vortex at the Copenhagen club Ved Siden Af, and is the art director of Courtesy's label Kulør.

BIO:

Philipp Drube started djing in 2012 as part of the underground techno scene in Hamburg. He has been running parties and DJing ever since. One year later, he moved to Berlin and became a resident at Ismus in 2015. This year, he co-founded the label Space Trax with a first release of Dimensionhopper (aka Schacke) and Lund&Rønde in late summer.

His style is diverse and spacy, combining solid oldschool techno with trancy melodies. Specified in hard- and psytrance sounds, his sets become unique and special.

BIO:

Old school techno, hard house, acid, modern and 90’s trance, industrial hard techno and fun motives of gabber, Less Distress tends to experiment with styles, moods and bpm.

Her DJ sets are a blend of high-paced music in which she tries to create an exiting sense of nostalgia, the main state of the dance floor that attracts her in modern rave culture.

Less Distress started to produce in 2014, her initial interest in music was laying outside of the club walls. However, many tracks later, she found herself inspired by the power of the dance floor and dedicated herself to the speedy genres. She reflected on the new fast techno scene with her first “Tsar-City” EP released on COUP. As a producer she stays within the frames of fast music, trying to express ideas and experiment with emotions, sticking to the traditional ways of making music and preferring warm analog sound from the machines.

I.E aka Jonathan Carroll Scottish born and German based DJ, co owner and label manager of Ismus. Having arrived in Berlin in early 2016 Jonathan quickly joined forces with the Ismus team building the party series and eventually launching the label at the beginning of 2019. Aside from his involvement in Ismus, Jonathan has been making his way around Europe playing at many like-minded party series’ such as Raw in Paris and now home to his 2nd residency Streck in Gothenburg. The I.E style consists mainly of hard techno sounds with a definite nod to 90s Trance, Schranz and Gabber.

In her aspiring career, beginning at age 16, Lindsey Herbert has continued to drift towards the deeper realms of techno, constantly honing her craft as a DJ and getting involved with the thriving scene in San Francisco. Fast-forward to 2020 and Lindsey has truly become a recognized name in her city and beyond, in large part thanks to her unique signature sets — true journeys that explore alternating soundscapes laced together by dark, deep and heavy textures, as well psychedelic elements and ethereal melodies. With tour dates that have brought her to international venues playing beside top name DJs, she is an artist to watch.

Lindsey’s hard work over the years has paid off, gaining her residencies with San Francisco’s Robot Ears for the past five years, as well as earning a spot on the roster of Berlin-based agency, Point Collective. She has played coveted gigs in Detroit, Chicago, Athens, Istanbul, and throughout Germany, as well as her recent debut in the legendary Tresor Berlin and Gate Club in Batumi, Georgia.

Lindsey's debut in the production realm was in September 2018 with a remix of Martyn Päsch's track 'Sacred' on KVLTÖ Records. Her debut solo EP was released in 2019 on LA-based label Ascetic Limited with a remix from Motionen.

My name is Marko Predovan, AKA Trigg. I've been DJing for around 3 years now and have been evolving and refining my style for just as long, spending countless hours digging for just the right sounds I like. Although I play around with a lot of different styles at home, including trance, the sound I'm currently putting out is a mix of serious groovy and hypnotic/trippy techno that's often pitched up to a faster pace to produce more energy!

Around 2 years ago I went to ADE alone, and randomly went to some meetup of members of a Facebook group I wasn't even a part of - TechnoFist. The immediate and butterfly effects of that decision have been enormous, as that's how I met some of the coolest and kindest people I know. I've been pretty active in the group since and it has inspired me a lot, so this opportunity to contribute to it in this way means so much to me!
