His approach to DJing as well as his own productions has a refined element to it that has set him apart from his contemporaries for a while now. Since he started to DJ at the age of 14, Alpha Tracks has only gained more acclaim in the scene, often being mistaken for a long-standing veteran. His attention to detail and his passion for the ravey, trancey 90's inspired sound have made him a standout-figure in the trance-revival movement.

A: "If I could erase a genre, it would either be techno-trance pop-edits or neo-rave. I really don't like both of them and generally I'm not a big fan of that tiktok-techno stuff that got so big over the recent years."

Berlin-based, German-born artist Josephine Voigt delivers our first podcast of 2024. As a resident DJ for local collectives @hraberlin, @cumulonimbus-berlin and the Leipzig-based @exilkollektiv, Josephine has emerged as a DJ to watch in recent years. She never lingers long on any one sound and fuses several sub-genres into her sets, evoking visceral feels in clubs like OXI, Suicide Club, ://about blank and beyond. Right now, Josephine is into minimalistic, hypnotic soundscapes punctuated by percussive-organic rhythms and psy textures, as displayed in her TM8 mix. Anna Pavlova, aka Softmatter, is a DJ, producer, multidisciplinary artist and vocalist whose output is characterised by twisted and distorted electronics, heavy-hitting drumwork and mutant vocal samples. With a keen interest in post-human theory, neuroscience and quantum physics; her musical practice explores the fluidity and uncertainty of experience and perception. In Anna’s own words, “When I begin the creative process without expectations and embracing uncertainty, I get results that represent me the most.”

UK-born, Amsterdam-based writer and DJ LNR has recorded a FLINTA-focused mix for us. Inspired by the collective dialogue between her journalistic research surrounding dance music history and her obsession with collecting old-school vinyl, the multi-disciplined artist translates pen to wax by creating journeys centred around fluid iterations of sound system culture. Exploring refractions of music in the hardcore and psychedelic spectrums and integrating technological rawness with dissociative coils, LNR has played alongside 90s legends like 69db from Spiral Tribe, Eat Static, Felix K, μ-Ziq, and Scion, and has DJ'd in Amsterdam's Garage 
Noord and for Belgium's free party collective, V23. 

In this mix, however, LNR has ditched her usual vinyl-only format to highlight a talented array of FLINTA artists, including music from the feminist freetekno collective Witchcraft rec, and producers Nkisi, Azu Tiwaline, Saskia, DJ Sofa, c00, gi, Laura STZ, Freeman 713, Kan10, DJ Spice, and Liza N Eliaz. The latter was the earliest trans woman in hardcore, according to LNR's research. "She co-produced the first ever Bonzai record before Jones & Stephenson's 'The First Rebirth' came out and made the label go crazy," LNR told us. "Sadly she died in 2001 but it felt important to me to include her music in this mix. Shout out to other old-school female techno, hardcore, and jungle legends who didn't make the mix this time: Ixindamix, Laura Grabb, Miss Djax, Kemistry & Storm, and DJ Rap."

Composer, producer, and DJ dragongirl has recorded a mix for us featuring some of her own tracks too. Having released her critically acclaimed debut album 'hot blue' on the Norwegian label Sheep Chase Records in 2023, dragongirl has since brought her vibrant sound to some of Northern Europe's most well-known clubs and festivals including Denmark's Den Anden Side, Berlin's OST and OXI, and Kaleido Festival. Her sets blend trance, techno and happy hardcore with influences from Eurodance, gabber and EDM, inviting her audience on a playful and unexpected adventure. And that's exactly what dragongirl mirrors in this week's mix.

Felix Benedikt, alias Alpha Tracks, is a Techno producer and DJ based in Vienna, Austria. His mature sound has often had him mistaken as a veteran producer. In fact, Benedikt is actually a talented young artist with a wealth of music already under his belt. The first release on the reactivated label Morbid had strong international resonance and Alpha Tracks has continued with highly acclaimed records like Blue Hour since.

The music of Alpha Tracks is mainly produced live on analogue machines with different guest musicians, focussing less on technical fetishism than on the live dynamics of studio collaborations. The result is a sound that refers to the Rave era of the early nineties. Alpha Tracks blithely ignores tempo limits or taste doctrines. Aesthetic taboos or even fragments of often maligned genres, are not treated as a retro fetish, but are folded into the contemporary oevre with playful Viennese charm.
