The bird had flown away
The eggs are left in the nest,
If the bird feels for her eggs,

This poem is often take as a prediction of the Sixth Dalai Lam’s death and rebirth in Lithank in East Tibet.

Inside is the precious jewel, The wish-fulfilling jewel
In Norbu Lingkha Palace, Don't say there is jewel
Precious Yeshi Norbu, What is he if not jewel?

This is a Nangma, one of the two traditional music from Lhasa. The other is Toeshey. This song is about hope and stability. This song is believed to have been written in the 16th century for the 6th Dalai Lama' reincarnation.

The triple gem refers to the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha: the three pillars of the buddhist path. When we take refuge in the three jewels we let go of our old values and step outside our comfort zone to begin to deconstruct the paradox of how we exist as a mass of tangled emotions, while at the same time we are the Buddha. Ultimately there is only one jewel, which we will eventually have to discard, just as we abandon the boat we have taken once we reach the other shore. Letting go of the path will be the hardest and most interesting part of our journey.

Techung is a Tibetan singer/songwriter living in exile in upstate New York. In addition to being looked up to as one of the key keepers of traditional Tibetan musical traditions, he is also respected for the original solo and collaborative music he creates by drawing on both his own heritage and his familiarity with other world music traditions. 

Techung had the honor to open for His Holiness the Dalai Lama's public speech in USA,Costa Rica and Japan. His latest album Techung-Tibet-Lam La Che (On The Road) (2013), with Keb Mo and poet Tsering Woeser received four Best awards in the category of: Best Album, Best Song, Best album cover design and Best Love song at the Tibetan Music Award.

The lyrics of Nangma and Toeshey songs contain references to Tibetan culture, history and society. Hence, while translating many of these may make very little sense in English. Most of the Nangmas and Toeshey that are recorded here are taught to me by late master Gen Lutse La, but there are few that are new which were taught to me by Garpon Pasang Dhondup la, who visited TIPA from 1980-84.  Both teacher have passed away. My singing is also influenced by late elder singers such as Anen la, Chushu Yeshe Dolma la.
