Take me higher

Take Me Higher

Rechung Ma 

This song “Rechung Ma”, or Yogini or Female Saint”, is about Nangsa Woebum, a female folk hero who met two young yogis on a bridge named Tsechen Zampa. She asked the yogis to pay attention to her plea and lead her to the path of Dharma or Universal truth taught by Buddha.

Nangsa Woebum is a folk hero in Gyangtse, in South-Western Tibet. There are many stories, songs and even an opera or Lhamo about her life. I love the description of her name: “Nang” means Gift and “Sa” means Earth. “Woe” means Rays or Light. “Bum” means a Hundred Thousand – a Gift to the Earth of a Hundred Thousand Rays of Light.

Nangsa was born to an ordinary family who were Dharma practitioners.  One day the local powerful landlord named Pon Drakpa Samdup married her to his son Drachen.  She was beautiful, kind and caring but her husband's aunt, Ani Nyemo, was very jealous of Nangsa. She stirred up a lot of dirt and negative stories about her. After several years Ani Nyemo beat her to death. 

Nangsa was taken to the cemetery, and while this was happening her spirit or consciousness traveled to the king of death or Shinje Choegyal. The king did not find any misdeeds or sins and asked her to return to Earth. So she came back, here, to her own body which in Tibetan is known as ‘Delok”, and she persuaded her community to follow the path of Dharma.

Techung is a Tibetan singer/songwriter living in exile in upstate New York. In addition to being looked up to as one of the key keepers of traditional Tibetan musical traditions, he is also respected for the original solo and collaborative music he creates by drawing on both his own heritage and his familiarity with other world music traditions. 

Techung had the honor to open for His Holiness the Dalai Lama's public speech in USA,Costa Rica and Japan. His latest album Techung-Tibet-Lam La Che (On The Road) (2013), with Keb Mo and poet Tsering Woeser received four Best awards in the category of: Best Album, Best Song, Best album cover design and Best Love song at the Tibetan Music Award.

Both teacher have passed away. My singing is also influenced by late elder singers such as Anen la, Chushu Yeshe Dolma la.
