It’s only fitting that Camp Lo’s classic debut, 'Uptown Saturday Night,' would celebrate its 20th anniversary on a Saturday (today, Jan. 28). And to pay homage to one of the album’s standout tracks, producer Teck-Zilla shares his jazzy and smooth remix of “Sparkle.”

As it appears on the album, the track glides by with an effortless swagger thanks to the playful rhymes of Bronx duo Geechi Suede and Sonny Cheeba, and the loungy production of Ski Beatz. And in the hands of the Nigerian-born, Montreal-based Teck-Zilla, the track is still super-chill and ideal for a smoked-out jazz club. You know, kind of like the one depicted on the cover of 'Uptown Saturday Night.'

That is, of course, if the venue has a section for dancing and moving about, because Teck’s remix has a definite swing to it. His beat also injects some new sounds into listening experience, including some infectious horn stabs. And if you’re feeling his work on here, be sure to check out the producer’s latest projects; like last year’s Jackson 5 tribute, 'Joe Jackson Kids,' and his record with rapper Allen Poe, 'Lightbulb Over My Head While I’m Thinking.'

On the dawn of a looming worldwide pandemic Athletic Mic League held an epic 4 day retreat at Wes’s creative compound. This was the first time in over 15 years the crew assembled to make music. Members traveled from California, Georgia, and Michigan (their place of origin) to reach the secret location right outside of Richmond, Virginia. No expectations were set for the retreat, therefore no one knew what the outcome would be especially after such a long hiatus. Almost immediately the Lab Techs set up several production stations throughout the compound to produce a continuous stream of non stop heaters, that set the tone for the whole thing.

The retreat represents a resurgence of one of the most innovative collectives of the late 90’s and early 2000’s. It also represents the bond of a brotherhood that has lasted for 25 years. Because of that bond and a commitment to innovation, the Mic League was able to reflect on years of impact, and influence, both as a collective and individually. Stay tuned for the continuation of this narrative through their expansion of media generation in the form of music, film, creative retreats, and technology.
