Love this experiment - particularly the tones of 2:56

Wonderful. I recorded some nice tones and resonances with contact mics on the Millenium Bridge at St. Paul's in London a few years ago, which I used in a piece called Concrete Sonorities. Is the Max Neuhaus piece still playing through the grating in the middle of Times Square ?

Embers in the Ash is the latest release from New York based artist/musician Ted Riederer. Building upon his 2021 release Transfigurations, Riederer's latest limited-edition dives deeper into lock-groove experimentation. Embers in the Ash is inspired and dedicated to the late Philip Jeck. For 10 years, Riederer and Jeck played an audio Exquisite Corpse game sending music back and forth across the Atlantic Ocean. During a 2022 Philip Jeck memorial at Hyphen Hub in New York City, the seeds for From Spark to Arc were planted. Embers in the Ash is a composition made but cutting and layering a series of lock grooves from the solo guitar improvisation. Only 10 copies will be cut with limited edition archival pigment print covers printed. These limited-edition releases reflect Riederer’s belief that vinyl records are sacred objects not to be mass produced. In this era of ubiquitous streaming, Riederer believes that vinyl record releases should be treated like fine art print editions.

In the Fall of 2010, I traveled to Lisbon with the Antagonist Movement, an East Village artist cooperative founded at the turn of the century. We went to Lisbon as guests of curator Carlos Alcobia who had invited our group to participate in a festival Called Pop Up Lisboa.
This week's episode will attempt to take you on an anthropological journey through the wonderful streets of Lisbon.

Episode 57

I've always believed that art has the capacity to re-enchant this disenchanted world. As part of a larger artwork called Persistent Echoes I dreamed that I could play the Brooklyn Bridge like a piano, a 14,680 ton musical instrument. So yesterday, early in the morning, I whacked the tension cables of the bridge with a plastic mallet and recorded the strikes with these custom clamp piezoelectric microphones made by this guy named Crank Sturgeon. Initially, I was disappointed that I could hear no discernible tone, but when I watched the cables vibrate I marveled that they looked like vibrating guitar strings.
So last night I pitch shifted the cable strikes, just a simple pitch shifter no bell filter, and voila I was able to compose a simple piece that sounds like a undersea xylophone. You can hear the vibrations of the wind and the cars on the roadway. It's noisy and sounds like sonar yet miraculous nonetheless. I'm in awe of all of the possibilities for discovery that surround us.
