Immersed within a vat of saline and various metabolic fluids, the firing of one neuron caused a single eyelid to stretch open across a partially formed facial structure. Beside it, the skin could be seen to slowly creep further and further onto its grafting target, moving as an amoeba across the substructure of musculature below. In its wake was left an appearance fully grown but without an origin, a being that existed in defiance of the natural order of life and death. Yet neither was this a reanimated corpse nor was it the birth of one anew. Instead, the face that spread before the watchful eyes of the onlookers present was one known by all in the room.

Brought into being from the remnants of DNA evidence left behind at the scene of the crime, those gathered in the room watched in gruesome awe as a mirror image of an individual that they had all hunted unsuccessfully grew within the vat. It was a visage tied to crimes conducted with the utmost brutality, the face of one deemed so vile that no technique was too inhumane to be used to stop them. Indeed, the monstrous marvel of science that floated within the milky solution the vat contained bore a perfect resemblance to the quarry that it had been designed to hunt. Every tooth and nail, every follicle of hair, and even every ambition, memory, and desire had been copied over into this cloned form. Only one sole difference separated this new form from that of its predecessor: an implanted, intense, and burning hatred for its progenitor that consumed its every thought. This new being, a weapon wrought from human flesh, would exemplify completely the horrors that its double had inflicted upon the world. It would track its prey ruthlessly before standing in perfect opposition against them as none other could. As those gathered in the room examined the form that continued to grow within the vat, there was a palpable fear that permeated the silence within. They had created the perfect NEMESIS for a great evil, and yet in doing so they had redoubled that evil’s presence within their world.
DESPERSION unveil their second EATBRAIN EP with the release of NEMESIS, a three-track work that features collaborations with like-minded artists 2Whales and Focusfire. Within the EP, DESPERSION delivers an unrelenting series of high-speed sonics steeped in sci-fi textures and backed by plenty of bassweight set to send listeners spinning across dancefloors by merit of their inimitable energy.

When one of Technique Recordings' new signings drops their first release, there's, understandably, a buzz of anticipation among DnB heads. After all, this is the label of Drumsound & Bassline Smith, Tantrum Desire, Document One, and L Plus, just to name a few. So, the duo formerly known as Glass Cobra, even more formerly known as Dubba Jonny & Russla, now going by the name No Concept, has a lot of heritage to live up to.

Of course, Technique's A&R skills are as sharp as ever. That's clear right from the intro of this EP's first track, “Nowhere to Hide”. As Arte's vocals rise and blaze over atmospheric chords and shifting patterns of arpeggio, we're drawn inexorably into No Concept's sonic world. And, trust, the title means what it says. There's no hiding from the vicious lash of those snares and thorax-shattering kicks and bass when this beast drops. Hazardous material.

But then there's another facet of the No Concept sound displayed in “Fingers”. As the shadowlands of the first few bars unfold before us, there's an unsettling uncertainty about where this track might be taking us. And that pitch-bending build delivers us somewhere just a bit different from the average. There's an stridently insistent riff that draws inspiration from jump-up, but with a serrated-edge low-end power that makes it something else entirely. This is going to earn wheel-ups wherever it's played.

“4 Dayz” is another twist to the tale. A minimally percussive intro, punctuated with dark tinges of vocal, sets the tone. Then there's the heart-stopping drama of that drop-out before the inevitable hammer-blow. This hearkens back to classic techstep, rolling breaks supported by a two-step pattern that punches huge holes through the frequency range. All that, with a high-energy warping and modulating bassline that is going to keep the dancefloor enthralled.

Closing out proceedings, we've got “Waste My Time”. With its ever-rising layers of percussive synths in the intro, those 4/4 claps, and floating vocal samples, this could almost be a reconfiguration of the hardcore formula. The drop is all about the catchiest of bassline hooks drives us onwards, with stabs and a sheen of reverberating atmospherics filling out the soundscape. All of this, supported by the neck-breaking drums that No Concept have already, even within this EP, made a staple of their sound.

So, welcome to No Concept. In this collection of four tracks they've laid out a benchmark. These guys have proven their ability to deliver forward-thinking DnB aimed squarely at the dancefloor. And you know there's going to be a lot more where that came from.

The mass of supplicants prostrated just beyond its twisted paws, their pathetic mewling pleasantly caressing the towering feline fiend’s ears as they expressed their divine agony. Drinking up the delicious earmilk of their pain, it reclined languidly in its glorious pedestal; a mass of flesh and sinews with the fine carved bones from the countless many condemned to this realm of eternal torment. Its three eyes rolled apathetically to fall upon one particular beggar, drained of almost all remaining life from her years pennance, spent at the foot of the infernal throne, worshipping the glory of pain in all its truth and crying for salvation. The utter futility of this endeavor suddenly dawned on the great cat, as the constancy of myriad calls made for escape fell upon his ears at once. Suddenly annoyed by this ever-present sound, he reached out, spearing the pathetic being before him with a claw and flinging her from into rock and into the depths of the molten river below. His eyes watched her form ignite and fade in the heat, her soul joining others to be swept into its current on a journey to be reborn as pitiful lesser devils elsewhere in the plane. How benevolent an act, the cat thought to itself, freeing the pitiful creature from her suffering for a brief moment and more even - giving her the opportunity of such an esteemed metamorphosis. Even though the pathetic fiend she would be reborn as would hold not even a candle to his own magnificence, it would still be a marked improvement against the limits of her prior flesh. Sated by his own thoughts, he leaned forward once, rotating his vast ears to better drink in the fresh desperate energy of the remaining supplicants. Its hideous mouth opened to a wide, sharp smile, revealing cruelly serrated fangs that shone unnaturally with a umbral hue. “A reward for my benevolence,” he thought as he plucked the nearest wretch from the rock with a single talon, his pupils sharpening with focussed malevolence as he tossed them into his fur-lined maw. Satisfied, his hunger temporarily sated, there was but one thing left to do. He would take a nap.

The ZOMBIE CATS return to the label that set the fire on their ferocious project back in 2014, placing them on a fierce trajectory of furiously kinetic releases that have brought them to the present, their most pointed assault on the eardrums yet with the WORLD’S END EP on EATBRAIN. With the title track tearing out of the mouth of hell with slower bpm but highly charged energy, further establishing the newly forming neurowave genre, the cats make a bold statement from the outset. Also featuring 2 intense collaborations with masters of their art ABIS and MALUX, alongside 3 further astounding intensely fresh solo cuts, the WORLD’S END EP is a welcome return for one of tech dnb’s most respected duo’s, on one of the genres most consistent labels. The end is here, and it’s one hell of a ride.
