Teki Latex For The Blessed Madonna's Sweatbox BBC6

This mixtape is a round up of my recent collaborations and remixes organized around a little exercise: each track of mine is mixed in and out of tracks that have somehow influenced said Teki track. My taste in electronic music covers quite a wide spectrum and the tracks i co-produce and/or chose to put some vocals over are sometimes going in different, some might think opposite directions. With this mix i was trying to explain the weird logic behind it all, to show why it all makes perfect sense to me by highlighting the missing links between my works. I also wanted to demonstrate how my tracks and the directions i choose to take in my music are (humbly) made to be interpreted as "missing links" between these classic tracks I love. As usual with most of my solo mixes this was mixed completely live with my CDJs in the mighty computer room, so please excuse the occasional "ruggedness" of it: this is how i like it, and i hope you will enjoy it too. Deconstructed Trance Reconstructed is me messing with the concept of tools in electronic music. 

After falling in love with Lorenzo Senni's brand of drum-less Trance, i assembled some tracks in the same vein, as well as synth-based drum-less Grime tracks with Trance influences and naked synth lead loops from proper Trance tool albums. Then on the other side i collected hard hitting drum tracks from all genres, all totally devoid of melodies in order to stick them on top of the drum-less Trance parts. Then it was like playing a musical construction game and re-contextualizing these synth-based pieces by giving them totally different and unpredictable rhythmic identities. The result is meant to be perceived as one long piece of music with several melodic motifs coming in and out.

Deconstructed Trance Reconstructed est une réflexion sur le concept de "Tool" (outil) dans la musique électronique.

Après être tombé amoureux du style bien particulier de "Trance sans beat" de Lorenzo Senni je me suis mis à collectionner les morceaux sur le même principe, en mettant aussi de côté des morceaux de Grime sans beat basés sur des mélodies au synthé rappelant la Trance, ainsi que des boucles de synthé provenant d'authentiques compilations de tools de Trance. D'un autre côté j'ai rassemblé des "drum tracks" (des morceaux ne contenant que des percussions et dénués de mélodies) issus de divers genres électroniques, afin de les superposer aux morceaux de Trance sans beats. J'ai ensuite joué à un jeu de construction musicale en re-contextualisant ces pieces de synthé en leur ré-inventant des identités rythmiques différentes et imprévisibles. Le résultat s'écoute comme un long thème musical constitué de motifs mélodiques qui apparaissent et disparaissent.

Hard House Special for Call Me Radio

With this mixtape I wanted to get away from time restraints and fully express my current musical mood so it is a longer mix, full of all the deeper hypnotic aggressive blends I rarely have the time to deploy in radio shows or recent short sets and B2Bs.  It is mostly abrasive techno, sped up percussive tracks and US hard house from all eras. Just a beautiful tunnel of repetitive disorienting raw bang-your-head-on the wall, mental yet feral, electronic four-to-the-floor funk. It took me two weeks to get it perfectly right in one take after multiple failed attempts and technical problems, adjusting the fluidity, trimming and sculpting the tracklist to really reflect what I truly want to play these days without having to cater to anyone but myself. Listen, working on this mixtape gave me an actual tendonitis. This is real home-made triple CDJ artisanal work. Once it was done I facetimed the homie TEZ to ask him to make me an artwork and he delivered it on the spot, in an inversely proportional amount of time it took me to make the mix, which is just chef’s kiss. I hope this hour and 53 minutes of simultaneously intense and soothing music will bring you joy and make you dance.

When i was doing my weekly DJ-centric web TV broadcast Overdrive Infinity in the last few years  i noticed a group of young Parisian DJs and producers forming around the show, kids who would come almost every week and who vaguely knew each other from online. They were all lovers of Grime, US Club styles, Ballroom, Kuduro, Global club music, you name it, just like me. They were the new generation of french underground music makers, but they were also quickly realizing that even though it brilliantly borrowed tropes from different dance music styles originated in various countries, their sound wasn’t specifically french-sounding if that means anything. As i befriended them, we got the idea to try and think of a new identity for a french club sound that didn’t exist anywhere else and that would be a confluence of some of the various electronic music styles which had an impact on the french audience. After a certain number of discussions online and IRL, during sessions in the same studios where Overdrive Infinity was taking place, an embryo of a new genre was slowly being born.

Out of the blue a severe explosion occurred in the building next door to the studio due to a gas leak, making the studio impossible to use and later on forcing parent company Dailymotion to sadly terminate the projects attached to it, Overdrive Infinity included. We no longer had a place to meet regularly but that idea of a new french sound kept flourishing, becoming more and more concrete as we all kept getting together at club nights and whatnot. Towards the end of 2016 the first Bérite Club music tracks (named after Rue de Bérite in honor of the street of the defunct studio) started appearing and being played at small club nights, and just like that a movement was born. 

Today i am collecting a lot of these early Bérite Club Music tracks and mixing them together with influences that were discussed during our reunions, trying to put together a sort of manifesto for what Bérite Club Music should, or at least could be, in the form of a sonic collage. It’s a starting point for a new generation of producers to build on, and hopefully take to the next level as the style matures and becomes more and more tangible.

The Naked King is the final chapter in my « King Of Blends » trilogy of mix tapes (the previous instalments are 2016’s 100% RADIO HITS and 2017’s Impressions). I wanted to explore once again the world of blends and giving iconic pop pieces as well as classic underground tunes a new context by layering them with more modern and/or obscure tracks. I wanted it to be about finding beauty in anachronisms and considering time not as a line but as a dot where Squarepusher, Lil Flip, Rod Lee, Lorenzo Senni and Finn’s music are happening simultaneously. I wanted to go against the rules of progression in DJ sets, while maintaining a fluidity that resists tempo and key changes. It is a stream of consciousness that ends up being more informed by the construction of a Lil Wayne verse than the typical temporality of your conservative DJ’s latest techno mix. Every track builds on the flow of the previous one played, but then i realized it went from a jungle track to a Houston rap acapella to a grime beat to an accelerated Miami club track to MF Doom, and i thought it was fine, because it’s all the same music to me and it all makes perfect sense. Lots of tracks are played at the wrong speed, things slow down and accelerate again, and the ride itself, no matter how chaotic, becomes the message. In the year when every one is acting surprised that t’s acceptable again for DJs to « play anything », i wanted to show the world what « play anything » truly means.

The tardigrade is a micro-animal found everywhere, from mountain tops to deep sea, from tropical rainforests to the Antartic. It is able to survive extreme temperatures, extreme pressures (both high and low), air deprivation, radiation, dehydration, and starvation. It can have sex in outer space.  Under unfavourable conditions, it goes into a state of suspended animation in which it can survive for years or even decades, making the tardigrade virtually immortal. I’m not trying to say « I am like a tardigrade » or « this mixtape is a tardigrade », i’m just saying, tardigrades are really cool.
