The new year starts with a mix by one of my favourite artists and producers Daria Lourd aka Bored Lord. She has been on my radar for her relentless and beautifully crafted mixes and edits for about 3 years and I am happy that Daria is the first artist in 2022 to contribute to the mix series. Apart from being a glamorous figure and well renowned DJ in the night clubs of NYC, San Francisco, LA, her hometown Oakland and beyond, Daria started self-releasing her own productions and edits back in 2018. She uses her vast influences spanning several decades of music and genres to produce her own tracks and combines them with samples from TV series, movies, pop songs and rave anthems but also collaborated with producer, singer and performance artist IDHAZ for her EP They Never Taught Us To. Daria’s first production outside of her own bandcamp, The Last Illusion EP, came out in September 2021 on Eris Drew’s and Octo Octa’s T4T LUV NRG. It was the first release that was not produced by either one of the co-founders of the label. Her motivation for this expansive creative output comes from keeping the tradition and craft of DJing and edits alive, giving people something to dance to and allowing room for whatever process might come out of that but also utilizing her craft for her own expression and world building. Love this! 
Bored Lord is working on a full length album and several collaborational EPs with friends at the moment, so keep your eyes and ears open.

The Naked King is the final chapter in my « King Of Blends » trilogy of mix tapes (the previous instalments are 2016’s 100% RADIO HITS and 2017’s Impressions). I wanted to explore once again the world of blends and giving iconic pop pieces as well as classic underground tunes a new context by layering them with more modern and/or obscure tracks. I wanted it to be about finding beauty in anachronisms and considering time not as a line but as a dot where Squarepusher, Lil Flip, Rod Lee, Lorenzo Senni and Finn’s music are happening simultaneously. I wanted to go against the rules of progression in DJ sets, while maintaining a fluidity that resists tempo and key changes. It is a stream of consciousness that ends up being more informed by the construction of a Lil Wayne verse than the typical temporality of your conservative DJ’s latest techno mix. Every track builds on the flow of the previous one played, but then i realized it went from a jungle track to a Houston rap acapella to a grime beat to an accelerated Miami club track to MF Doom, and i thought it was fine, because it’s all the same music to me and it all makes perfect sense. Lots of tracks are played at the wrong speed, things slow down and accelerate again, and the ride itself, no matter how chaotic, becomes the message. In the year when every one is acting surprised that t’s acceptable again for DJs to « play anything », i wanted to show the world what « play anything » truly means.
