I was looking at old photos of a town gathering in the 1800s for a lynching. I was struck at the carnival atmosphere, the presence of all kinds of people, women and children. This is disturbing but very real and it is NOT confined to America,the South but instead is a sad global problem with religions and "God". Too often I think religions are excuses to commit some of the most awful  human atrocities . Religions,like leader cults(nazis/emperorsetc), seem to blind masses into justifying the slaughter  of the enemy of the day. God in most religions preached tolerance/forgiveness/inclusion and yet these fundamental principles are conveniently forgotten when it comes time to fulfill some self serving goal, monetary/territorial or ego. I wish I knew why

leaves are dancing in the wind

sherriff and the barber
the doctor and the lawyer 
all the townspeople are there

just to meet and greet
and to chat about
the news and their hopes and fears

The children all are there
dressed up in their best

the crowd all turn their head
they march the black man to the tree

a noose slips round his neck
they pull him up on high
so his legs can swing free

there's heard a horrible crack
that splits the morning air
the children look up and they stare
as his legs they shake

until he hangs there still and limp

then the children turn around and finish up their games 
on this bright and sunny day

now it's time to go
they hear the parents say
off to church to learn to pray
