LIL BIT (prod. NxxxxxS)

Like the rest of 'Gliss Riffer' I did all my tracking and mixing in Ableton Live 9 at my studio in Baltimore, Maryland. It was mid july and it was insanely hot (no AC in studio) when I finally got this track and my mind was melting into a mush that just wanted to go swimming.

Most of the 'Feel The Lightning' music that makes up this instrumental track was written in the back of the van during a long drive on the 2012 European tour for my album 'America.'

It was one of the first song I had begun to write after America and I had just started messing around with Ableton (it must of been version 8 at the time). I really feel in love with the Operator Synth and splice audio into midi (more on that in the synth stem description and  drum track description. wow this is boring unless i'm so sorry)

Musically I realized that this track was an outlier for both the album and my work as a whole. The drums are for the most part just a backbeat, there is no bassline to speak of, and it was much slower in tempo compared to my other work. 

It was fun to mess around with a style different from what I was used to and I thought it would be a good way to introduce and start off the album.

In March, barely six months since its initial release, following tours with friend and sonic sister figure Laetitia Sadier (Stereolab) and one time backing band Black Rivers (two thirds of Doves), Jane will release an expanded edition of The Silver Globe - including a second full-length disc called The Amber Light which follows the original LP with the same dedication and adventurous zeal as its much loved synth driven sister record. With a title that alludes to the toils of trepidation and a running theme of industrial procreativity and DIY handy craft, The Amber Light carves a niche between new age motivational music, radiophonic folk and snarling krautrock echoing the kosmische stylings of The Silver Globe with the punk urgency of 80s domestic-synth pop. Featuring four brand new songs, three exclusive instrumental themes (including a commissioned theme from an American vampire film) and three new collaborative re-workings/duets based on tracks from The Silver Globe, this extensive package harbours work from Tom Furse (The Horrors), Andy Votel, Suzanne Ciani, members of Demdike Stare and original Silver Globe inhabitant Pete J. Phillipson. Substantiated by other extra format editions, including a silver vinyl version of The Silver Globe, a series of compact cassettes and a single release of standout robotic roller rink track Don’t Take My Soul (presented digitally as well as a split single with Bird Records label mate Tender Prey) Jane’s expanded Silver Globe/Amber Light project reciprocates the positive energy shared by her loyal readership and a wide host of new converts who have allowed Jane’s self-sufficient songs and synthetic soundscapes to flourish on he cusp of 2014/2015. Showing little signs of slowing down, Jane Weaver alongside her Bird Records family looks set for an airborne year. The Silver Globe is still turning and catching many a siege in its electric rays.

On the cusp of their first U.S. tour, Kiev-based four-piece Bichkraft deliver their shimmering second album, Shadoof. To write and record their sophomore effort, the group built a studio in a debris-strewn lot in the hilly Roshinskiy neighborhood of Kiev, Ukraine. Using the piles of broken classical LPs, discarded winter coats and Soviet-era refrigerators they found there, they constructed a studio to serve as their de facto headquarters. The trash-filled yard outside, in all its chaotic beauty, became its own source of inspiration for the recording. Once the songs were complete, the band refined them on the road, performing around Kiev, throughout Ukraine and for the first time in Russia.
    
Finding inspiration in the wasteland, Shadoof refuses to end the party even while chaos and disintegration build around the edges. From anthemic industro-punk (“Big Red Robe”) and jagged, hook-filled noise pop (“Sleeves at Farewell”) to pulsing techno noise (“Stain of Rest”), Shadoof hits hard out of the gates and takes listeners on a journey through Kiev’s winding streets, out past the Ukrainian border and into regions unknown. "Onze danses pour combattre la migraine" has just been reissued on vinyl. This seminal album was recorded in 1977 by Crammed founder Marc Hollander with Vincent Kenis (a.o. producer of the Congotronics series), and originally released on Marc Moulin's ephemeral Kamikaze label.

In the spring of 1977, two young Belgian musicians who call themselves Aksak Maboul (Hollander & Kenis) set out to record an album in which they playfully fused and deconstructed all kinds of genres to create their own musical world. Three years later, Hollander founded the Crammed label. 

Leapfrogging over style & genre boundaries, they took in elements of rock, electronics, jazz, early 20th century classical, imaginary African & Balkan music, American minimalism, and even proto-techno (as in the surprising track 'Saure Gurke', which foreshadows some characteristic Detroit techno riffs by a good ten years).    

"Onze Danses…" became a cult album, and can retrospectively be viewed as a manifesto for the Crammed aesthetics, a blueprint for some of the directions which the label went on to follow during the next few decades.

Following the recent release of the band's 3rd album (the 'lost' avant-pop opus "Ex-Futur Album", which came out 30 years after having been recorded), Aksak Maboul have been playing live again, with a renewed line-up.

Taking their name from the official cigarette butt of Kansas City, 
Missouri, Kool 100s can be found lying on the sidewalks of its seedier neighborhoods, 
exposed to the elements like a drunk mooning a lightning storm and/or god. 
The guitar is a noxious, carcinogenic fog of blaring 12-string d'jangle, 
tainting lungs and clothing and sweated out in salty chemical rivulets that pool in bodily crevices.
Somewhere in the thick smog of trebly melody, the smooth amphetamine pound of bass and drums 
try to work as many notes and beats into a minute and a half song as possible 
with the jittery insistence of a nic fit. Blood pressures rise, temples throb. 
Vocal melodies diverge from guitar lines, but both are ascerbic and addictive, 
causing blood vessels to dialate and mixed-company to cough uncomfortably. 
Smartly-written lyrics reek of tales of shitheads and ex-girlfriends ("no baby, this one's not about you"), 
bad decisions made with no regrets ("I shouldn't have taken the whole thing"), 
and compulsions you can't swear off ("I can always stop tomorrow").  
Mark Twain suggested you should "write what you know," and so the Kool 100s wrote 
BLOOD SKULLS PUSSY AND VIOLENCE, AXES DAGGERS UPSIDE-DOWN-CROSSES.  
To date, they've also released a 6-song seven inch "We Buy Gold" on Springfield, Illinois' Garbage Shop 
and a cassette "Diet Black" on Omaha's Rainy Road records.

Two brandnew and exclusive tracks by one the best French bands around. Getting their start in October of 2009, The Limiñanas are the brainchild of Lio and Marie Limiñana. Beginning as a home studio project the duo spent much time flipping through John Barry and Ennio Morricone LPs and books on Victorian era architecture, watching Noir films, and basking in the sun of Southern France seeking inspiration. Their first single came by way of Chicago's venerable Hozac records, followed up by a single 7" release, “Je-ne-suis-pas-tres-drogue”, on Trouble In Mind in April 2010. It's been noted that there are traces of Serge Gainsbourg, Beck, Stereolab, Gospel, Yeh-Yeh, guitar fuzz freakouts, and Nugget's-era stompers in the Limiñanas music. All of which may be true, but Limiñanas' sound is irreverent and singular.
