When George Vlad from Mindful Audio let us know he was going to Kenya for an expedition we thought it was a great opportunity to sponsor him with the Telinga Modular parabolic reflector he already purchased from Pink Noise in U.K. We were eager to find out how it worked with the mics he already had in his collection, and very happy to showcase some examples

Black Swans amongst Australian Shelducks. Also, Grey Teals, Silver Gulls, Pacific Black Ducks, among others. An excerpt from a longer recording made between around 03:00 to 04:00, long before first light, in the Coorong region, near Narrung. Recent heavy rains inland have brought much fresh water downriver, reducing the salinity of the Coorong waters and adjacent lakes, which has resulted in a blessed influx of birds. The location of the recording is at least 15 kilometres from the Coorong, but traces of the Coorong's signature relentless deep roar are audible from here.

Recorded on land of the Ngarindjerri people that is now either National Park or privately owned pastoral land.

2022.02.20 Black Swans. Coorong. Night. Late Summer.

An indulgently lengthy excerpt, but reflective of taking the time, under a searing morning sun, amidst flies, to sit still and listen to the intimate psychophysical presence of these very curious yet nervously cautious calves, as they approached nearer and nearer. In particular, the sounds of their breath. Wondering about their existence, and their destiny.

SCHOEPS Parabolic Dish Set: Fallow Deer 30-40 m / 100-120 ft. MONO(Mats Bentmar)

The cars and people passing on push bikes in this recording were actually behind me, and therefor behind the dish with a single CCM 4 inside capturing the Starling in front of me, and even though the passing cars behind me sounded quite natural with the CCM 4 alone, it's only in mono, so by adding two omni Lom Usi Pro's to the edge of the dish, it brings back in more detail to background sounds whilst giving more of a stereo image too. It's surprisingly quite a pleasant experience in the headphones and also helps you locate the source of your subjects without taking headphones off to get a sense of place in your environment. Of course, you don't have to worry about that with the Telinga Stereo mk 3, but as far as quality goes this is a good alternative.
