Gold has been adored in many cultures since earliest times due to its natural brilliance, rarity and apparent imperishability. Because of its unique appearance, it is associated with the sun and was assigned to the sun in alchemical teachings. Thus, the ancient alchemists attributed similar properties to the element gold as to the sun. It was said to have a brightening effect on mood and one's energy level, to penetrate deep into the cells and to free the organism from all impurities and unhealthy conditions.
Consequently, gold became worldwide a highly desired and mystical material, which is surrounded by many myths and legends.

It was a hot, sunny afternoon, in August and I was just fiddling with my guitar, jamming to some well-known riffs, one of them being Black Sabbath’s ‘Planet Caravan’. By constantly switching the riff around on my hollowbody Gretsch, I found myself singing along, just like Kevin Morby or Bob Dylan would do on one of his oddly shaped musical masterpieces, with a high-pitched, annoying voice. I was going on about this gibberish singing for 15 minutes until a hook hit me out of nowhere and that’s how I started Golden Goddess. 

I rushed to record the guitar, in the process slowing down the riff, which did not sound like Planet Caravan anymore, it was something totally different by now, much more laidback and much more gentle. I overdubbed another guitar and another, and finally, I recorded the melody for the vocals. In my experience, this is where the hardships start, and this time it was the same, going back and forth between pages of lyrics, until I ended up on a blank page. 

If you’re not a writer, poet or an author who puts thoughts on paper, the concept of a blank paper being frightening is hilarious, but for someone who writes everything in a leather cover personalized notebook, has a favorite page format (dotted grid) and uses a preferential pen to write (0.5 Molotov Sharpie), the blank page can be intimidating. 

I then remembered that at the start of recording Escapism, I promised myself that I would try to write more about the people who surrounded me, the experiences that I had with them, the memories I cherish,h and the little things that make up life. On that train of thought, I came up with the idea that all the women in our lives are superwomen, but I am not a comic book type of guy, so I said they are deities. Now as far as I know, in ancient times people venerated different diets and they would always try to invent an image for them, crafting statues out of different materials, sometimes even gold, to give a palpable image that goes with their stories. That’s how I came up with the idea of a Golden Goddess.

Most of the tracks on Spellbound were produced in my old basement studio in Brooklyn during the winter lockdown. I remember thinking a lot about freedom of choice, why I like music, and whether we live in a computer simulation or not (I know, I had a lot of time on my hands).
Now, while these thoughts didn't yield any answers, they sure seeped into this release.

The track Cinderella really is about perseverance against the odds. The prince turns his kingdom upside down, goes from door to door, looking for his love, trying to not break that glass slipper. That night with old Cindy must feel like a long gone dream, a fairy tale, unreal, yet he won't let go...or can't...or chooses not to. He keeps holding onto something that ain't real. A possibly endless enchantment without knowing whether the spell is good or bad. That prince would make a fine artist!

On Repeat deals with the kind of spell that leaves you powerless, but in a good way. A magic you surrender to, a trustworthy sorcery, and also a sexy bass line, if I may say so.

Spellbound, the title track, is actually a shower song - I sing under the shower, everyday, I cannot control it. It's like there are little tunes hidden within the white noise of the running water, and usually they go down the drain with it, never to leave the bathroom - not Spellbound though. That main melody was stuck in my head for days, couldn't wash it off. Very strong spell, beware!
