Many times people have told me how much they just can't stand reggaeton. That omnipresent style build on the golden dem-bow rhythm that has gone on to conquer the world, Bad Bunny and beyond. 

But, beyond the mainstream (which goes for any music) there is something incredible about that simple rhythm. Following on from my last EP Tón Tón I thought I would see what happened if I tried to make a mixtape of "dem-bow" music which has absolutely nothing to do with dem-bow music. 

This mix is a juxtaposition of styles and sounds m(think Aphex Twin meets Ayra Starr meets Baiuca meets Âme...some dub techno, some Moroccan gnawa, some Ana Tijoux...)but all tied together by the thread of a dem-bow rhythm.

Smash the Rabbit Hole - Against Antisemitic Conspiracy Theories in Club Culture

In the depths of the digital rabbit hole, antisemitic conspiracy theories and disinformation are spreading rapidly, and club culture has not been spared. On 7 October 2023, Hamas committed the largest antisemitic massacre since the Shoah in Israel, murdering 1,200 innocent people, including hundreds of Nova Festival visitors. Many in the club scene remained silent, showing no solidarity with the victims—or worse, propagate anti-Israeli and antisemitic content. Artists who have not been sharing political content in the past, are now adopting one-sided, supposedly pro-Palestinian narratives that often contain antisemitic patterns. These narratives portray Israel as a colonial aggressor, reinforcing radicalisation and leading to the general condemnation of Jewish identities and Zionism. This ideology masquerades as anti-colonial and emancipatory, while in reality, it trivializes and partly glorifies antisemitism.

Furthermore, BDS-related voices in the international and German club scene are calling for a boycott of cultural venues such as Berghain, HÖR Berlin, Conne Island Leipzig, and others, for addressing antisemitism. These calls for boycotts, labeled as an “expression of solidarity with Palestine,” threaten important spaces of cultural exchange financially and damage their reputation. Instead of focusing on mutual understanding, they harden the fronts between “pro-Palestinian” and “pro-Israeli” positions and divide the scene.

So consider asking yourself: what about the artists that I follow? It's a black hole. Hard-won, rather leftist “principles” against antisemitism are being fundamentally questioned. People think that's progressive. Jewish people are incoherently placed under general suspicion, and Zionism, the right to a self-determined Jewish life in the ancestral homeland, is labeled as new fascism.

This mixtape sends a clear signal against these developments. It is a call to question antisemitic narratives, protect free spaces, and fight hate and disinformation. Smash the rabbit hole.

In a way, dance floors are free places. Music connects and builds bridges, beyond origin and language. Everyone is welcome as long as they respect each other.

Ohxalá is the musical project of a Portuguese duo: Maria & Luís. Maria works as a printing technician in a photo lab and Luís works as a website programmer moreover both devote much of their non-working hours to music and photography. From this dedicated and parallel passion started the will to make it alive somehow and, consequently,it had been growing faster particularly since the recent adventure of the duo in Germany in 2016. Such a journey is the starting point of this plot. On his return to the Portuguese lands, eager for information; an effervescent and inspiring will to investigate and absorb settled in the duo. In this 3rd juicy birth of the Vaganika Shamanika series, I sampled the late-great American-Poet Maya Angelou, her epic poem "Still I Rise”…This is my battle-cry-booty-call for the Global Awakening of the hearts of humanity, in the form of a musical mix-sound-collage...this is my humble offering to the world, my offering to the feminine within us all (completely beyond gender concepts) that longs to heal us and open our hearts WIDE open, our whole beings wide open to BEAUTY AND TRUTH in the face of adversity.

Shout-outs go to all the human-Womb-Warriors of radical love, kindness & truth that realize that none of us get out of here alive, and there is no time to waste on doubts of whether or not one is worthy of shining their truth in their lives…It’s time to RISE the F UP, from the inside-out:  together, locally, globally.
