A talk with international curator Jan-Philipp Fruehsorge and TBG+ Studio Artist Brian Fay hosted by Temple Bar Gallery + Studios for National Drawing Day.

Thinking about contemporary drawing practices internationally and in Ireland this talk explores the innate paradoxes in drawing now: why is drawing described as something special and not at the same time? if drawing is a medium is there specific content? do we still see drawing as a verb or a noun? Using some key images from diverse drawing practices these and other themes will be discussed.

This event was kindly supported by the Goethe Institute Irland and is hosted as part of the annual celebration of National Drawing Day, an initiative of the National Gallery of Ireland.

Artist and filmmaker Declan Clarke participated in a public conversation with artist Gerard Byrne, on the occasion of Clarke’s exhibition The Hopeless End of a Great Dream at Temple Bar Gallery + Studios. The 16mm film commission was shot entirely on the grounds of Trinity College Dublin, using the diversity of architecture within Trinity’s walls as a backdrop and metaphor for the last 100 years of Irish history. Declan and Gerard discuss the work and Declan’s artistic practice to date.

Artist Talk: Declan Clarke in conversation with Gerard Byrne

Sibyl Montague's varied and multi-disciplinary practice combines found and time based material to foreground the primacy of material and its ability to perform. Working between sculpture, video and installation, her work explores the core materiality and agency of images and objects that accumulate through capital, to engage principles of economy that suggest wealth, leisure or parcity.

Throughout her practice Montague uses the process of assemblage – where the contingency and incongruous associations of different elements aim to re-assert everyday materials in a process that concurrently de-familiarises them. Drawing from a wide vocabulary of elements that combine both online/offline sources, the works focuses on the particular, base qualities of material and its currency and affect within larger networks or economies relating to consumer goods, user experience or brands.

On completion of her year-long Project Studio tenure at TBG+S and following her recent exhibition Beyond Violet at Wexford Arts Centre awarded as part of the Emerging Artist Award, Montague will discuss her recent work and participate in a discussion with TBG+S Director Clíodhna Shaffrey.

Atoosa Pour Hosseini's studio talk on the 24th August in her studio here at TBG+S where we got a sneak peak at some of the 8mm film she is currently working on for her moving image and live sound performance in Filmbase.

Artist Mark Swords participated in a public conversation with Programme Curator Mary Cremin, on the occasion of his solo exhibition The living and the dead at Temple Bar Gallery + Studios.

For Temple Bar Gallery + Studios, Mark Swords has created theatrically staged paintings that have come into being through a series of gestures that juxtapose the idea of making and unmaking. The paintings, often overwhelming in chromatic saturation and design denote the artist’s instinctive knowledge of colour. Layers of mark-making create a screen through which the buried undertones and colours emerge. The exhibition runs until Saturday 1 April 2017.

Temple Bar Gallery + Studios (TBG+S) is delighted to present a reading by Gavin Corbett and Claire-Louise Bennett. The writers will be introduced by Susan Tomaselli, founder and editor of gorse journal.

These two outstanding writers have been commissioned by TBG+S in an experimental programme that aims to support different kinds of writing about art. Gavin Corbett is TBG+S’ third commissioned writer. Claire-Louise Bennett was the commissioned writer in 2016 and Sara Baume in 2015. For this programme, writers are invited to write short pieces - taking their own tack, fictional or otherwise - in response to the five gallery exhibitions that take place over the course of a year. The writings are published on our website and available in our gallery.

Claire-Louise Bennett and Gavin Corbett are writers of immense talent. They are part of a new generation of Irish writers gaining international recognition for the new-found vitality of their writing - pushing boundaries in contemporary, experimental fiction. Claire-Louise Bennett has been praised for her ambitious, imaginative and innovative prose. Jial Tolento of the New Yorker praised her debut Pond, calling it ‘a work of fiction that will make you feel pleasantly insane’. Matthew Adams, of the Guardian, called Gavin Corbett ‘one of the most inventive and beguiling writers of contemporary fiction’. The Irish Times, in praise of his latest novel, Green Glowing Skull, called it ‘a blizzard of imaginative energy… prose sings on every page - while it slips its strangeness in.’
