It's early days yet, but things are going well for the London-based trio FACTORY FLOOR: Nik Colk (guitar/vocals/electronics), Gabe Gurnsey (drums/ electronics) and Dom Butler (electronics/vocals). And Optimo Music are in the unique position of doing a remix for Factory Floor and having a exclusive single release for it. 

“~ (R E A L  L O V E)” An Optimo (Espacio) Mix is already getting attention from James Holden, The Quietus, and it was only mastered about a fortnight ago. The Optimo (Espacio) mix was made at the behest of Factory Floor an was done by Optimo music head honcho JD Twitch alongside his sometime collaborator Dave Clark.

Stephen Morris, the drummer and rhythm king for music legends Joy Division & New Order produced the original version and continues to work with the band on remixes and new tracks. 

Both tracks will be released as a 12" single on 6th April 2011.

By now Envy's influence on various strains of underground music has been cemented – and reiterated by artists as varied as Thursday, Mogwai, Deafheaven, MONO, and Touché Amoré. With legacy comes expectation, and expectation often breeds complacency. It takes only 20 seconds into opener "Blue Moonlight" for Envy to dispose of the gentle, lilting guitar figures that have marked much of their past couple albums. So begins the journey that is Atheist's Cornea, their first album in five years.

Despite its relative brevity (at 43 minutes it is Envy's shortest album since their early 90s thrash days), Atheist's Cornea is easily the band's most progressive work. Beginning with a punishing pummel, holes of light are gradually punched open to reveal an uncanny series of dynamic, emotionally charged epics. Not only does Atheist’s Cornea showcase some wholly unexpected new turns for Envy, it also often reaches transcendent heights that could overwhelm a major blockbuster film — all while vocalist Tetsuya Fukagawa sings, screams, and speaks like his life depended on it.

Atheist's Cornea is the purest, most distilled example of Envy's brand of brilliance. If there is one constant with Parlour, it is that nothing is ever the same. For nigh two decades, the Louisville, KY experimental troupe – led by Tim Furnish of influential, defunct Louisville art-rock band, Crain – has had more line-up changes than albums. This consistent creative movement keeps the sound of Parlour forever curious, and impossible to predict. While that flies in the face of conventional wisdom for commercial prospects, it unquestionably makes for more compelling and mercurial music.
On the band’s self-titled fourth album, Parlour pushes ferocious, dynamic guitar rock to the brink with hypnotic repetition and shifting, stabbing rhythms. In fierce Parlour fashion, the driving crunch of guitars is punctuated with shimmering buzz of synths. The difference here, though, is Parlour has shed their trademark woodwinds in favor of a leaner, heavier aesthetic. With a reduced instrumental palette and increased focus on beats and riffs, the songs are more naked and intense – equal parts crashing krautrock, and crushing prog-rock.

Parlour - New Syntax Preserves

Over the past few months Nick Zammuto has been digging back into his seemingly endless backlog of rare tapes and LPs collected during the Books’ tours from 2005-2011. Veryone compiles the first three tracks that mark the beginning of a new line of sample-oriented work that Zammuto plans to develop into a full-length album in 2017. Of this new work, Zammuto says, “In many ways it feels like coming home.”

“My Dog’s Eyes” is based on an outdated list of children’s favorite things. Zammuto took each image, found its rhythmic heartbeat and intrinsic melody, and put them in order of increasing tempo as a structural basis for the track. He then composed additional instrumentation around this structure, in the process revealing the natural cadence and harmony within each phrase.

On “It Can Feel So Good,” Zammuto built a tuned array of PVC pipes and a device that holds a small speaker in the optimal position for re-recording sounds though them (pictured on the Veryone's cover). Using Zammuto’s well- documented, innovative record-scratching process, unique vinyl rhythms were pushed through the pipes to create the rhythmic and melodic structures of the track. He coupled this with a beautiful voice from a vintage meditation tape from the 1970s, chopped and tuned to match the pipe resonances. A portion of this track originally appeared in the 'New Now' episode of Adult Swim's show Off The Air.

For the final track, “Smolt,” Zammuto guitarist, Nick Oddy, donated an old Epiphone SG electric guitar, of which Nick Zammuto removed the frets. By tuning, pitching and delaying improvisations on the fretless guitar, Zammuto sequenced a number of interlocking melodies and rhythms. An old choral tape sample, which happened to be in the same key as the guitar, became the counterpoint. To complete the piece, a lot of 'noise' from recordings of rain and fire were adapted as a kind of “smoldering” backdrop.

Stateless is the second full-length album of genre-hopping	post-everything	experimentalists Tangents. In a delectable hybrid of styles, Stateless cuts up and weaves together rich instrumental passages from the multi-talented ensemble of musicians whose collective resumé spans decent swathes of recent experimental music history: British electronic music producer Ollie Bown (Icarus, Not Applicable); Adrian Lim-Klumpes (Triosk, 3ofMillions) on piano, Rhodes, vibraphone and marimba; Peter Hollo (FourPlay String Quartet) on cello; and the duo Spartak (free improviser Evan Dorrian and singer/producer Shoeb Ahmad on drums and guitar respectively). Sparse metal-coated drum hits stumble over glistening reverse vibes, Saharan guitar licks, Fender feedback and washes of filtered piano. Moments of acoustic jazz surface, flowing into stoic upbeat anthems, drenched with multilayered patterns of glitched strings.

Cognitive dissonance is, at this point, an everyday part of modern society. The difference between belief and reality is blurrier than ever, and there is often sufficient manipulation to both so as to make the distinction intentionally unclear. The source of those manipulations can either be external, or deceptively internal.

False Readings On is the new album from renowned experimental composer, Eluvium. Its creation was originally inspired by themes of cognitive dissonance in modern society. By its conclusion it had become a mirror rather than a magnifying glass, evolving into an hour-long meditation on self-doubt, anxiety, and separation from one's self.

There is an emotional lucidity and melodic ingenuity to Eluvium's music that has made him increasingly stand out from the sea of ambient artists that his earlier albums no doubt helped inspire. Sounding like an orchestra ceaselessly performing even as it sinks beneath an ocean of distortions and tape noise – with the occasional operatic voice piercing the surface – False Readings On is assuredly the most daring, dynamic, and distinct album of his luminous career.

It all started with a fan letter…

“Hey Peter, just noticed you on a Rhys Chatham link. Just want to say I adore your work, I had a release on DFA recently, and they sent me some of your releases you did with Jonathan - so brilliant! I’ve had “Condo” track for a while, this completely catches my personality and when I feel disillusioned or need comfort, I always put this on, and it makes me feel good and strong.....i will stop gushing now! Thank you!

This was Peter’s reaction…

“I was quite flattered and was glad that ‘Condo’, one of my lesser-know tracks, was being appreciated. (I was also curious, because the most-viewed clip of ‘Condo’ on Youtube is actually a slowed down version: someone played the 12” 45rpm EP at 33 rpm. The result, however, is quite beautiful.)

I responded, said I hoped we could meet the next time I am in London, and Nik then suggested that she had a track that she was working on, and would I like to listen to it and possibly collaborate. I am always game for a new challenge, so I said sure and Nik sent an mp3.

I was immediately struck by the haunting and evocative nature of the track, the analog synths feeling fresh and familiar at the same time, the vocals having a primal quality of breath and phrasing. I loaded the track into Ableton and instinctively began recording some overdubs. I used analog (Prophet 5) and digital (Moog iPad) synths and a soprano saxophone. I then sent a mix to Nik.

Nik responded quite positively, and over the next few weeks we exchanged files back and forth, experimenting with different mixes and submixes. After a couple of dozen rough mixes, accompanied by email discussions among the three of us (Gabe had entered the process after the first few exchanges,) we settled on a final mix. Shortly after we had a final mix, I synchronized the track with a video that my partner Kit Fitzgerald was working on. This long extended shot fit the music perfectly, and we had a video for ‘Beachcombing’. (A still from this video serves as the artwork for the 12”.)

Initially, there was going to be a one-sided 12”, with ‘Beachcombing’ the only track. Nik then wrote to me that Dominic was also interested in working on a track, and would I be interested in working on a B-side with Dom. Of course, I readily agreed, and I received an mp3 of synth tracks. As previously, I began building up tracks, using the alto sax (rather than the sopranino used on Beachcombing) and the addition of a vintage Korg vocoder.

Once again, a series of file exchanges of mixes, submixes and discreet tracks ensued, and we finally settled on mix #26a. There is kind of a sweet quality which surprised the both of us.”

The result is before you now and forthcoming on Optimo Music. Modern collaborations with magical results!
