Stasis and Transition (2018) is an open score work composed for mixed ensemble. The piece is made up of a series of short micro-dramas which have been ordered into four short trios of around 2-3 minutes each (one piece per trio). Each of these four pieces have been further divided into 5 sections labelled A-E, where A consists of the most static material and E consists of short, pointillist material. The role of the conductor (who has no formal score) is to structure the piece by following a set of instructions that create varied scenarios with the 4 pieces, or to order the fragments improvisatorially in performance using a set of colour coded cards labelled A-E to signal each trio to play different sections. The conductor may also choose to run all 4 pieces simultaneously from start to finish.

Stasis and Transition (2018)

The Real and the Imagined (2018) is a work inspired by Xenakis’ famous and energetic percussion solo, Psappha (1975): a work exploring interlocking quaver and semiquaver patterns. Similar to how Xenakis gradually introduces six distinct, but similar sounding percussion families (skins, woods, metallic etc.) The Real and the Imagined introduces each section of the orchestra beginning with the hocketing quaver patterns amid the string section, which are shortly followed by the vibraphone’s interrupting semiquavers, abrupt chords in the brass, and a rapid flurry of notes in the woodwind. These semi-quaver and quaver sequences are then layered in multiple ways to create a series of varied textures. As the work progresses the piece begins to slowly deviate away from its original source as it flourishes into a canonical wash of sound. I would like to dedicate this piece to Marc Yeats for all his support and advice during composing this work.

Future sound of London tribute

Endorfun is a single-player, arcade-style computer game released in 1995 by Onesong Partners. It is notable for its use of new age messages throughout its soundtrack. The player controls a small cube, referred to as a light body, by using the keyboard, or mouse. The light body rolls along a grid (the unified field) in front of psychedelic kaleidoscopic backgrounds, collecting life force tiles (coloured tiles with a texture matching that of the cube) by rolling the cube over them such that the top face of the cube matches the colour of the tile. Coloured tiles of varying types appear randomly on the playing surface, but can be eliminated in the same manner as life force tiles.  Games are divided into multiple levels, each of which has a set time limit and a life force target. If a player collects the target amount of life force play proceeds to the next level. If the timer expires or the light body is unable to move (all adjacent grid spaces are blocked by coloured tiles) then the game is over.

There are three different modes of play in Endorfun, each with different goals:
Longevity: play for the longest possible time
Abundance: pass through a set number of levels before time runs out
Quickening: as Abundance, but levels become progressively faster and more difficult

Endorfun’s world-beat soundtrack (courtesy of The O Band) is composed of a large number of short, looped song segments.  Each segment ranges from 2 – 12 seconds long, with different segments strung together to provide londer, varied soundtracks for each level.  The soundtrack contains messages oriented towards peace, well=being, love, and happiness.  Played back-to-back, all 272 .wav files are 29 minutes in length, however I have looped each one 3x, for a more enjoyable, extended listening experience.  1:24:51 – 1:30:26 marks a dramatic shift from the African/tribal/ambient vibes to more electronic-based material.  This segment is one of the most enjoyable parts of the soundtrack to my ears, so these were looped longer.
