Widely regarded by industry tastemakers, curators, and punters alike as a trailblazer within the underground community. The magic within Merve’s craft lies within her ability to traverse a broad scope of styles, defying genre restrictions and expectations, all whilst sounding consistently true to her own sonic signature. From sweaty underground basement parties, to sold-out large-scale festival stages, a set from Merve will pull you in and take you on a journey. Then ow Berlin based, Naarm / Melbourne native's early years in the music industry saw her lay rhythmic roots as a music programmer, curating event lineups, and contributing to a host of local community radio stations. Driven by a keen fascination with breaking down barriers between audience and performer, Merve explores the boundaries of each space she takes to, whilst blurring the dichotomy between light and dark. Kate's debut EP 'Sprint' celebrates and cements a genre-fluid ethos with four tracks where texture and atmosphere take precedence over convention.

The EP’s opener ‘Harpan’ is a bold ambient statement, brimming with otherworldly, bell-like piano riffs, humming pads, long, gliding sweeps and sparse percussion. Written in the stillness of winter, ‘Harpan’ captures the quiet beauty of solitude and anonymity amid movement. The title track ‘Sprint’ shifts gears. A synth-surge launches the track before a slow release into breakdowns, trading the opener’s introspection for unbridled motion. ‘Hoover’ deepens the momentum with lurching rhythms, a drunken bassline, and tangled, footwork-inspired snares. Finally, ‘The Embrace’ delivers the most club-focused moment, rattling congas and panning djembes ride a punchy kick, giving way to a dramatic, techno-infused finale.

Intentional in its construction and unbound by genre, Sprint marks a powerful new chapter for Kate Miller.

this week’s 909 podcast is a gritty edition from rodrigue dubois filled with juxtaposing energy of raw industrial soundscapes alongside moments of calming interludes. featuring tracks from air max 97, cs + kreme, dites safran, damna, lurka and lots of unreleased production from rodrigue himself. 

based in france, rodrigue dubois recently made his production debut on simo cell’s temet imprint. longtime friends and collaborators, rodrigue and simo first discovered and learned ableton together around 2010, experimenting and refining their craft side by side. speaking about the learning process and the early days working with ableton rodrigue says, “we were learning so slowly. those first three years (if not more) were really rough, and since we didn’t have any strong reference points in production, we had to just stumble along, learn by accident and experiment. i remember one day objekt spent 24 hours answering every question on a dubstep forum, that was like the holy grail!” rodrigue is also part of a band where he plays on guitar and what he is focusing most of his time on at the moment alongside the want to collaborate and work with other artists. with the knockout success of his debut, ‘old feelings’, we’re excited to see the start of this public artistic journey and where it heads next.

Here is my dj set recorded at Freerotation 2017. I played on the first night of the festival in room 2. I can’t remember the last time i was that nervous... Freerotation means a lot to me !!

The first 15minutes were a bit difficult, but the vibe was super nice and after a few tracks, the magic happened. The vibe at freero is so cool, I had a lot of fun :) The crowd noise was recorded and i edited the file in order to avoid background noises. I edited the second transition of the mix too as i had a problem with my recorder. Everything else is recorded straight off the desk with no edits.
