A preview of the new Après Compilation out 28 December 2009 digitally and as a limited edition CD.

For the last three years Future Classic has been hosting a laidback Sunday afternoon event called Après (of course this translates for “after” in French) at the Tilbury Hotel in Woolloomooloo, Sydney. A BBQ, friendly bar staff and turntables on the balcony in the sunshine have set the scene for these under-the-radar sessions that give guests (always performing unannounced) the chance to play more diverse sets than they would in the club. 

To give you an idea of the sound, guests have so far have included Brennan Green, Joakim, Mock & Toof, Lovefingers, Aeroplane, Canyons, Jamie Lloyd, Padded Cell, Idjut Boys, Foolish Felix, Todd Terje, Sidwho?, Loin Brothers, Jazzanova, Karsten John, Jimi Polar, Marcus Worgull, The Revenge, Yam Who?, Peret Mako, Arto Mwambé, Move D, Roland Appel, Dave Aju, Trus' Me, Jacques Renault, Will Saul & Woolfy to name a few with residents Nathan McLay and Chad Gillard.

This compilation brings together selected music from the four 12 inch vinyl releases, plus 2 previously unreleased exclusives thrown in for good measure. The compilation begins with one of these debuts, a sunshine filled nylon string slice of balearica from American Tom Croose’s Worst Friends project. Mario Basanov’s ‘Do You Remember?’ and Touch Sensitive’s modern Italo classic ‘Body Stop’ follows before we dive into the early Hot Chip sounding indie disco of Melbourne’s Clubfeet – ‘Edge of Extreme’s’ being a tune that has led to vocal requests from all corners of the globe. From here we shift down a gear with Pink Frost’s remix of Todd Sparrow, a haunting trajectory into the sunset stratosphere, and the Aussie muscle-disco of Sidwho? (also a member of The Swiss and Empire of the Sun) and the Loin Brothers ‘Heavy Helmet’. Toby Tobias claims the “tour bus disco” sound with his swinging number ‘Azul Blue’ and we finish with a swirling slo-mo cosmic exclusive from UK duo Outmode and the vocal ease of Jamie Lloyd and his lovely tune ‘The Wolf’s Sun’.

Dreems is the solo project of Sydney DJ Angus Gruzman – a man who can fairly claim responsibility for inspiring kids towards the dance floor for over a decade. As Gus Da Hoodrat, he was a long-serving member of the Bang Gang party crew and he’s ensuring the good times continue with his involvement in the Motorik label and the regular parties they throw. 

His mix for i-D is the kind of journey that only someone with an impressively eclectic record collection could take you on. Angus describes it as a “mix that was made with a certain rug in mind (it knows who it is). There was no more than a chair and a packet of empty crisps on the rug that I was playing to that evening. It's an intimate mix formulated in my mind for the open space of your mind. It’s 100% vinyl, 100% vibe and 100% me on the Persian rugs.”

Dreems: Music To...Cut a Rug To

"There was a time that I hated techno, because it was too functional, lazy, non-creative and without any imagination in my eyes. Thanks to labels as Minimal Wave/Cititrax, L.I.E.S., Hotflush and Phantasy, to name a few, techno got its soul back again. These recent discoveries have made me enthusiastic about techno all over again, and that’s what I hope you’ll hear as well."

Reza Athar is a name that has been snapping the necks of the club elite for quite some time now, so it seems. However, his quick rise actually started just over a year ago. Starting with his Horizon concept, in which he invites artists that needed to be introduced in Holland, he quickly got recognized for his diverse style and infectious DJ sets. Reza's style is very diverse. He can dive into some italo, head over to post 80’s house and head on to techno, and he can do all of this in under ten minutes. The unique aspect about all of this, is that even though his love for music crosses many genre borders, he is always on point with telling his story, and blending all his records into a single piece of music.

In this 90 minute podcast he will showcase his recent developments, and live up to the name of being a true story teller. Enjoy!

Discodromo has been making name for themselves by shaking up labels such as BPitch Control, Dissident and Slow Motion for over eight years with their signature sound, which is, next to house and techno, heavily influenced by Italy's biggest export in the 80s: italo. Discodromo however have taken the genre's poppy foundation into something darker and more suitable for today's musical landscape. As showcased in their 2012 track "Argento", and in this mix.

As you would expect of someone called Lovefingers, American DJ and producer Andrew Hogge has a very special touch when it comes to making, playing and releasing emotionally involving, blissed out music. Hailing from LA, he runs the magical ESP Institute label and is also half of The Stallions as well as being a self-proclaimed hippie. That always comes through in the organic, loved up music he works with, and visual aesthetics always seem just as important to him as musical ones. 

The romantic and intoxicating mix he serves up is dedicated to Red Light Records owner Tako Reyenga and Mule Musiq affiliate Kuniyuki Takahashi. It is a loose-limbed, love-fuelled and fully horizontal delight made up of underlapping grooves, oriental motifs and gluey pads. The second half touches on more physical drums but also offers up yet more heavenly ambiance, bird song and jumbled percussion that will have you reaching for your shades and dreaming of summer.
