I wrote this reggae-inspired song a long, long time ago when I was playing with some guys in Boston. This was back when reggae was infusing rock music all over the globe--The Clash, The Police, etc., and it also really got under my skin. We never got the chance to play it or rehearse it back in Boston, since the need to make a living had us all going our separate ways--me out to Madison, Wisconsin. Fast forward a couple decades, and I was teaching the cool reggae riff to my son Andrew. When we decided to form Penelope's Thrill, I knew I wanted to record it, but there was just one problem--I'd completely forgotten the lyrics, except for the title and first line. So I wrote entirely new lyrics.

Murder of Crows. Indie rock that combines '60s '70s rock with ska-a-billy, put-pop and a dose of fun — think Talking Heads meets Marshall Crenshaw meets Elvis Costello and you're getting close to the unique sounds of this album.

May 2018 — Tent Show Troubadours — Autumn's Empire is a 12-song album with the core lineup of Bob Hoot (guitar, vocals), Doug McLeod (bass), Tom Ellis (drums) and Jenniper Hylbert (vocals). Joining TST on six tracks is Gabe Burdulis (lead guitar-slinger) and on seven of the tracks is multi-instrumentalist Chris Wagoner (violin, lap steel, accordion). In addition, Molly Lins (vocals) contributes her angelic harmonies on every song.

June 2019 — Alchemy & Chemistry is the latest 12-song album by Tent Show Troubadours. Alchemy & Chemistry combines disparate elements on variety of songs which are methodically mixed to make musical magic. Eleven of the songs were written by Bob Hoot (guitar/vocals) with several parts Tin Pan Alley mixed with heavier metals. Base elements added by Douglas McLeod (bass) and Ben Lokuta (drums). Timothy Walsh (guitar/vocal) added a dash of magic dust with his composition. And, Gabe Burdulis (guitar) helped turn his lead (led n.; leed n., adj.) into gold. Shawndell Marks (keyboards) and Chris WAgoner (violn/mandolin/accordion) did string together these elements with taut drawn steel — organ(ic) and electron(ic) — heated with musical bellows to fuse it together. Lest it be overlooked, Jenniper Hylbert (vocals) and Molly Lins (vocals) lent the catalyst of silver-throated melody and harmony creating mellifluous reactions.

01 - Crocodile Tears

Tent Show Troubadours were formed in 2016 by Bob Hoot (guitar/vocals) and Doug McLeod (bass) as the foundation of the band. The rest of the lineup consists of Geri Hamilton (violin/vocals) who joined in summer 2019, followed by John Hamilton (guitar) in late September of that year. Tom Ellis (drums) joined the band in late summer of 2021, as well as Wendy Lynn Markus (violin/vocals), who had been a guest player with TST throughout much of 2020.

Tent Show Troubadours plays Alternative Rock and Alternative Country — original songs and favorite covers. Bob Hoot writes songs with smart lyrics in styles infused with Northern Country, Rock-a-billy, New Wave, Roots, and Gypsy Jazz — rockers to ballads. The music is rich in harmonies. TST performs original music from our catalogue of more than 90 songs, and covers from such artists as Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Darius Rucker, Little Feat, The Band, Todd Rundgren, Tom Petty and John Mellencamp.

TST has six albums and an EP of original songs to which you can listen and groove. Original Music in a Variety of Flavors, Tangled Ways, Revival (EP), Murder of Crows, Autumn's Empire, Alchemy & Chemistry and our latest album originals titled Lost & Found. After six albums of originals, the overlapping bands of Tent Show Troubadours / HOOT and Hollers recorded 10 cover songs on the aptly named album Cover Letters. In December 2021, TST released six videos and a streaming EP titled Tent Show Troubadours — LIVE at Clutch Studios.

TST has been a finalist in the MAMA Awards every year since 2018. In 2021, TST was a finalist in six categories and a MAMA Award Winner for Alternative Performer of the Year.
