Better Listen Records continues its hot streak into 2018 with a debut EP from Joe Corti. The young Londoner’s short discography is off to a strong start with singles on the always good Pusic Records, the always sleazy Mr. Nice Guy Records, and now a proper artist EP on one of America’s most promising underground house labels.

Comprised of carefully selected samples and exciting arrangements, From London With Love shows off Corti’s ability to dig out timeless samples for the dancefloor and weave them into a DJ’s dream. Special People and Mr Kuti make up the rowdy, percussion-filled A-side, while Thinkin’ and Fulham Broadway go a little deeper into disco territory — keeping in line with the label’s roots.

Special People and Mr Kuti are definitely cut from the same cloth, both containing a myriad of elements organized into hard to pin down but nevertheless emotionally engaging tracks. The repetition of the samples at play could easily get stale but, as the lyrics cleverly float in an out of understanding, one forgets about the message, stick to the feeling, and keep on dancing. Thinkin’ switches up the formula in favour of strings, cheers, and smart filtering. Rounding things off is Fulham Broadway, a funky number full of syncopated hits and an oh-so-sweet bassline. The tracks here could be from almost any era of which conveys a maturity beyond the producer’s years. From London With Love is out on vinyl January 26th.

Sometimes there’s a huge talent out there and you desperately want the whole universe to discover it. That’s pretty much the story of parisian label Chuwanaga with young french artist Koji Ono, composer and producer of these four precisely crafted gems, recording everything by himself. Brilliantly mixed by Greita from Disques Flegon, his first EP Incognito is the product of a lot of influences, from Metro Area vibes to the original Britfunk sound. With an inner sense of elegance in the arrangements - something we may link to his japanese heritage ? - the whole EP brings musicality back on the dancefloor. We believe this could be the beginning of a great story for this talented musician, Koji Ono emerging from the incognito shadow to the whole light of the world. Don’t miss out !

Since this is, surprisingly, our first time premiering something from local house veteran @FredEverything and his imprint, Lazy Days Recordings, a little background information seems appropriate. Founded in 2005, the popular label was originally named after a beach bar in Grenada. The primary intent was to release good sounding music with a strong artistic presence. Clearly, that goal was met and well-received as there are now 66 releases in the catalogue and surely more to come. Fred himself got his start in the early 90’s and made quite a name for himself in North America and then overseas via his DJing, original productions and of course his remixing prowess.

One of our other favourite Montrealers, @OJPB, is back, this time with an EP on the aforementioned Lazy Days, a combination that makes us extremely happy. The 66th release in the impressive catalogue showcases the synth lover’s versatility and consistency but also the evolution of his style. An analog gearhead, OJPB has a hardware focused approach to his music making and a way of getting a raw and organic yet polished sound. Compared to the last time we premiered a track from the local producer, he seems to have injected a little bit more boogie into his work alongside some choice sampling.

“Lucy’s Stomp” EP is a four track affair featuring a re-fix from Fred Everything himself as well as a digital bonus. The Bolting Bits premiere today comes courtesy of the B1, Bridgetown’s Pyramid (Fred Everything Re-Fix). Calling this one a re-fix rather than a remix seems to be the appropriate approach as most of the original production is retained. Fred takes the Barbados-inspired jam and pushes it further back into the mix giving it a slightly more stripped back feel while applying a more dancefloor friendly groove with his own shining percussion work.

For this mix M. Vaughan, manager of the label, tried to capture the vibe of Super Tuff —eclectic, heartfelt, and weird. The mix starts off slow, with ambient tracks, breaks, and synthesized soundscapes before moving straight into 4/4 house, disco, and techno. It's patchwork of music that influences him, music that represents Brooklyn, and a few tunes forthcoming on the label. Here's hoping it moves you! <3

00:AM! Where do we begin – although, if you’re a Montreal reader, chances are you don’t really need an introduction to this prolific trio – they’re literally everywhere! And damn do they deserve to be, after three years of regularly gracing us with a plethora of crazy, crazy acts from around the globe, invading unassuming Montreal pubs with sound, smoke and lotsa sweat in local-DJs-only Pub Club parties, and, as of last year, combining their cosmopolitan links with their dedication to community in releasing their first V/A record as the 00:AM label – you really can’t fit all their work in one sentence… buy fear not we’ve got an entire interview!

We had a little chat with them not so long ago; the guys reflect on three years of hard work and hard partying together in Montreal, share some personable anecdotes and hot tips, and even clue in on the next V/A release!
