TERANGA BEAT proudly presents DEXTER JOHNSON & Le SUPER STAR de DAKAR in their last performance before their departure to Abidjan in 1969. Mastered from the original tape this recording captures the energy and quality of these most spectacular performers. The group was led by the inimitable Dexter Johnson, a saxophonist whose unique timbre influenced generations of horn players in Senegal and who can stand with pride next to the great jazz musicians.

Nigerian born he came to Dakar through Bamako & left his mark from the first night he arrived in the city with the GUINEAN JAZZ, in 1957. Later he played with the STAR BAND de DAKAR & finally with the SUPER STAR de DAKAR where he made a great duo with the singer LABA SOSSEH in the club “À l’Étoile”.

“Live à l’Étoile” features many great Afro-Cuban classics, two killer boogaloos and a cover of Wilson Pickett’s “Something You Got”. The recording also shows for the very first time the capacity of Dexter after the departure of LABA SOSSEH. This gave him the opportunity to become the absolute frontman & to have the singers JOHN GOMIS, WILLIAM & MAĪSSA NGOM accompany his tenor saxophone.

The 2LP comes out in a deluxe ‘60s style cover with a bonus track & MP3 download code. Both LP & CD booklet includes photos & linear notes outlining Dexter’s musical career. We hope you will enjoy.

A. Rail Band - Mariba Yassah ft. Mory Kanté

One of Mali’s best known outfits, also known as Super Rail Band and the Bamako Rail Band. Led by the legendary Salif Keita. Their unique style came about as a result of the fusion of Afro-Latin-Jazz and traditional styles.

This track is super funky and tight from the first beat, with a catchy trumpet line running over the top and throughout. Mory Kanté features here on lead vocals.

Originally released on their album entitled ‘Super Rail Band Of The Buffet Hotel Del La Gare De Bamako, Mali - Rail Band’, in 1973 on RCAM. 

B. Les Ambassadeurs du Motel de Bamako - Get Up James

Salif Keita becomes the subject of some unusual A-side/B-side drama here - he left Rail Band to join Les Ambassadeurs du Motel de Bamako! Les Ambassadeurs du Motel de Bamako are considered to be one of Africa’s greatest bands, assembled in the early 70’s in Mali.

This record is a James Brown cover with a psychedelic-West African twist. Loud and proud JB style call-and-response vocals, driving organ, drums and guitar.

Navettes’ is the debut LP from Baron Retif & Concepción Perez (BR&CP). After releasing three records with Musique Large (home to Debruit, Laurent Garnier and Fulgeance) as well as with parisian label Heavenly Sweetness and assorted remixes and rap beats, they are back with Musique Large for their first full-length album.
Largely instrumental, the album also features guests Benjamin Glibert (Aquaserge) playing bass on «Navette» and «ML disco club», COEFF spitting rhymes on «Kamoulox» & Napoleon Maddox singing on «The Crave». BR&CP music sounds like Perrier sparkling water: never automatic, always elastic.

The first album of Web Web is very uncut, raw, live and direct. „Oracle“ is the first output of a German Supergroup. Check the musician credits below and you’ll get the score. The initial idea was to record a spiritual- jazz type of album, with all its imperfection as far as intonation, sound, influences of tunes... just like from their big jazz-heroes in the 70ies (e.g. Strata East, Black Jazz).
Web Web’s idea was to record a jazz jam session while to found and proclaim being a fictive band, a formation, which did not exist, while telling people, it would be a secret jam session recording of the Seventies. The prompt problem they were facing: Oh, we never would be able to play concerts, doing interviews, or placing photos on sleeves or post likeness images online. So they decided to reveal their real identities:
Web Web are: 
Roberto Di Gioia (Piano, Synth, Percussion), Tony Lakatos (Tenor- and Sopranosaxophone), Christian von Kaphengst (Upright Bass) and Peter Gall (Drums).

Roberto Di Gioia (Mastermind of Web Web): „The four of us set up very close in a big room, so we could hear and feel each other the best way. The music became more intensive, improvisations became more dynamic and it was impulsive.“

The album „Oracle“ was recorded on one day, only first takes were used!

We want to keep the burning spirit and the loose vibe we had during the recording session. And we play concerts the wild and free way we recorded this album. Web Web will be on tour 2018, but playing a few concerts in 2017. Furthermore, one main decision to blab their real identities was: The second Web Web album is recorded in June (with guests like the famous and unique Gembri-player and multiinstrumentalist and singer Majid Bekkas from Morocco).
Both albums were engineered, recorded and mixed by Jan Krause (Beanfield, Poets Of Rhythm).

Roberto Di Gioia: „Tony was tuning his Soprano too high, and his (overdubbed) tenor way too flat!

My synthesizers were somewhere in between...HA! We exactly had the sound we had in our minds, we had it exactly there were we wanted it: a bit of Sun Ra here, a bit of Horace Tapscott there.
On some tunes Tony’s soprano just sounds like a trumpet, since due to his weird tuning the soprano develops different frequencies in relation to other instruments.“

Recently celebrating an extraordinary 45 years in music, the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble, led by legendary Chicago drummer and percussionist Sir Kahil El’Zabar, are pleased to announce the release of their latest album, ‘Be Known: Ancient/Future/Music’, released 10th May via Spiritmuse Records.

An artist truly in a league of his own, El’Zabar is acknowledged throughout the world as the leader in the vanguard of spiritual groove and afro-futuristic jazz with a significant contribution in the continuation of the scene over the last four decades. His driving compositions - simple themes that gain complexity through repetition and improvisation - have been recorded with such jazz heavyweights including Pharoah Sanders, Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre and “Light” Henry Huff and he has toured with some of the biggest names in jazz including Dizzy Gillespie, Cannonball Adderley, Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder, Archie Shepp, Lester Bowie, Nona Hendryx, Billy Bang, Hamiet Bluiett, and David Murray.

Forming EHE shortly after El'Zabar graduated from the fabled school of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians in 1973, he teamed up with tenor saxophonist Edward Wilkerson, Jr. with the goal “To combine concepts of African American music with its earlier roots in traditional African music, to produce new motifs and sounds true to their origins yet firmly pointed in a new artistic direction”. Forty-five years later and the rich and compelling, ever-evolving sound the band are known for, is still going strong. 

Together with the Art Ensemble of Chicago, the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble are one of the two remaining original groups in the world today that were nurtured in the AACM. "I knew in my heart, that this band could endure," El'Zabar attests. "My concept was based in logic as it pertains to the history of Great Black Music. In other words, the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble has a strong rhythmic foundation, innovative harmonics and counterpoint, well-balanced interplay and polyphony among the players for highly developed ensemble dynamics. We are strong individual soloists with an in-depth grasp of music history, originality, fearlessness and deep spirituality.”

Alongside multi-percussionist and vocalist El’Zabar, the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble’s current line-up includes Corey Wilkes on trumpet, who has worked with numerous jazz masters, including Wynton Marsalis, Kurt Elling and with El’Zabar for 15 years, multi-instrumentalist Alex Harding on baritone sax and Ian Maksin on cello, known as one of the most versatile and innovative musicians of his generation, having worked with such diverse artists as Andrea Bocelli and Sting.

Following on from the success of the 2014 album ‘Black is Back: 40th Anniversary Project’, ‘Be Known: Ancient/Future/Music’ is an electrifying mix of spiritual jazz and African rhythms. Compositions such as the thrilling ‘Blew It’ are built around fundamental brass improvisations with a swing-induced groove, while El’Zabar’s vocal chants on ‘Pharoah’ whip up a trance-like fervour, as we are taken on a sacred journey of enlightenment and deep listening. 

With artwork designed by the Toronto-based interdisciplinary artist Nep Sidhu (Erykah Badu/Shabazz Palaces), EHE’s ability to consistently push new boundaries with Afrocentric rhythms and free-flowing jazz says a great deal about El’Zabar’s commitment to the music and the message.
