Black dust on my lungs as brothers lie,
Their picks are silent where the roof came down,
No daylight in that underground town.
I carry their names in the coal-face gloom,
Their lanterns lost in that coal-dust tomb,
I shovel sorrow for the ones who died,
In tunnels where no hope could abide.

Raise the lamp, hear the echo of the fall,
Hear the rumble in the pit’s deep hall,
No rising sun for the fallen men,
Their faces fade in the corridor of when,
We walk the coal-trail, we bear the scar,
For brothers lost where the shadows are.

Mother’s tears drift like ash in the wind,
Her only son in the dark has sinned,
Not by his hand but by the mine’s cruel greed,
They took his life for the coal we need.
I feel his hand on my shoulder still,
In every tremor of the engine’s will,
I speak his name by the shaft’s cold air,
His breath in dust, his spirit there.
