At some point in every producer's life, the urge to write an acid tune becomes irresistible, and for Grimey Electro pioneer Sir Hiss, that point is apparently now. Claps as sharp as Blade's blade in the film 'Blade', the kind of tension that can only be described as being 'just like the rave scene in Blade', and of course some iconic Grime sampling shenanigans all conspire to create an unholy banger of such blood-sucking power as to compel Wesley Snipes to pay his tax bill. Bad.

Meanwhile, M300 Tool showcases the further reaches of Hissian hardware exploration, taking a vintage TC Electronic unit and some hardware analogue drums for a spin down Flanger Lane, which is, of course, a minimal yet tuff thoroughfare leading to either Banger Estate or MC Village (MC not provided).

Finally, on EP closer 'Synchronisation', the NMM label boss, fresh off duppying Outlook for the Pineapple Records takeover, indulges the current temptation to 'get a bit proggy' with it, lacing synth arpeggios, bouncing toms and spacious bass tones together to answer the questions no one has yet dared to ask, namely 'what if Sasha & Digweed were from Bow E3?' and 'what if Northern Exposure wasn't really boring?' - The NMM / Bedrock beef starts here...

With the strong musical mind of an expert DJ, a lifetime of club adventures and a string of accomplished EPs, Jubilee delivers her debut album, “After Hours”. It’s a record full of meticulously programmed sub­bass, 808 and 909 prowess and masterfully restrained, timeless production techniques.

It’s Friday night in South Florida, your windows are rolled down and the humid air breezes through your hair as you ride the highway to the rave. You’re piled six deep in a Honda, the subwoofer is cranked up and the radio is just about drowning your laughter. As the ride goes on, and the frequencies change, the sounds move from old school salsa to soca, dancehall to rap, Miami bass to freestyle.

You reach the club, lasers are cutting through the thick air and scented smoke machines mask sweat­stained jncos. The bass courses through you, makes you feel free, you’re living for the late night.

This is the feeling central to Jubilee’s debut full length LP for Mixpak, “After Hours.” An exploration of the New York via Florida producer’s musical history and personal journey, it’s an atmospheric ode to her home state, a confidently crafted nightlife narrative unified by weighty low end and expertly wielded drum machine workouts.

“After Hours” is 808s and spring break, it’s the sweet spot while changing the frequencies on the Florida radio dial, a homage to vibing and partying in the 305.

Sheffield born production prodigy Lloyd SB has long been a secret weapon of the underground instrumental grime scene. His assertive club tracks have been staples in radio sets from the likes of Murlo, Scratcha DVA, Slackk and more, with his dominance over the more hard-edged side of grime production looking set to continue with his inaugural outing for Gobstopper Records, ‘8ths, 16ths/Princess Anna’. 

Opening to a cacophony of warped snares, the release’s A-side swells early on with a glistening soundscape, providing the perfect build thanks to buried mechanised percussion before pushing its rhythmic elements to the forefront. Using full frontal percussive artillery as its main focus, ‘8ths, 16ths’ almost completely removes any trace of melody in favour of unrelenting kicks, twisted snares and glass shatter sounds - providing a destructive take on the modern club blueprint. 

The release’s second track exhibits a more melodic if no less frenetic side to Lloyd SB’s production. Set to a pummelling bed of laser-esque bass sounds, ‘PRINCESS ANNA’ is a chaotic blend of 8 bit bursts, rapid-fire arpeggios and affected cymbals. Finding rhythm in the track’s space, ‘PRINCESS ANNA’’s beat becomes more and more sparse as it progresses, utilising dizzying panning and hints of vocal chops as the sole human element in an instrumental that’s as hard-edged and cold as they come. 

As an artist that’s widely considered amongst his contemporaries to be one step ahead of the game, Lloyd SB’s debut release for Gobstopper is a disorientating but focused example of forward-thinking club music. Both tracks embody the sound of a master of their craft, experimenting with their genre to push it into more devastating, and above all else, original places.

Patrick Brian, hailing out of Los Angeles has always had a keen ear for the essence of Grime production, and he returns to Terrorhythm with an E.P. that pays homage to some of the sound's raw beginnings on Strings & Squares.

Heading up the release is the lead track "String Tune" which has all the energy of some of Grime's classic pirate radio anthems. With a version featuring Desperado and Big Zuu doing the rounds on dubplate, this is an instrumental that has been doing damage already. With the 8 bar styles on this one continuing throughout on Fake I.D. and Wheelie, this is an E.P. that will find itself comfortable in the clubs and on the radio whether being spun in a set for MC's to pepper or to give the dance an injection of energy from a lone DJ.
