This number fifteen episode was recorded by lutin, whom you may know from our broadcastes and her "gradual change of pleasure" EP that was released on our label in April and has been provided on streamings recently. Nika Maurer – her name in real life – is an independent Russian electronic musician creating music in different genres. Her two main projects are lutin — weird dub experimental electronica and Lost Helmet — raw post-industrial sound with broken rhythms. In this mix she combined the sound of both projects. On that note we leave you with the mix and recommend to keep an eye on her music activity.

Roma Zuckerman - Waterfalls Pt.2 [Gost Zvuk]

The don of Siberian techno Roma Zuckerman (@roma-zuckerman) made his debut double LP ‘Phenomenon of Provincial Mentality’ on Gost Zvuk with a much-anticipated showcase of his remarkably diverse language of sound, from quickfire DJ tools to off-kilter extrapolations with a full stylistic diversity in between.

Working through the archive, the label assembled a collection of hypnotic loops in the vein of early Robert Hood and click-and-cut experiments that recall the punk attitude of Berlin's Elektro Music Department, all the while with nods towards European minimal. The album opens with two subdued, speak-and-spell processed vocal jams before 'Text Regulator' brings things into overdrive with furious drum programming and wide-eyed glitch FX. Over to Side B things take a turn into something more melodic and relaxing, an almost BBC radiophonic workshop zone with synthetic underwater sounds bringing to mind Amadeo Tomassi's library soundtracks of the late 70s. Think of early sonic portrayals of deep space exploration or the ocean's vastness mixed with repetitive 909 stabs.

‘I Play Everyday’ strikes as one of the album's highlights, a prime example of Zuckerman’s fascination with creating loop-based grooves to get lost in. There’s a hint of Richard H. Kirk’s 90s IDM classic ‘Freezone’ in the timbre of the opening moments, but where Kirk goes into sample-heavy cross-cultural futurism, ‘I Play Everyday’ seems acutely concerned with subtle reductions. ‘Extra Work’ harnesses a kind of pounding warehouse gabber energy with what sounds like a collage of shortwave radio voices, whereas album closer ‘Companeros’ brings in snippets of traditional Spanish-style acoustic guitar, albeit layered in a concrete manner with bursts of electrical distortion. It makes for one of the LP’s most surprising moments, but all round ‘Phenomenon of Provincial Mentality’ shows an artist working with a vast variety of styles. A truly great body of work to kick off the year.

That true beauty lies in the essentiality and meticulous combination of a few elements is sometimes not just a cliché. The delicate blend of Roland CR-78, acoustic guitar and dissonant organs that intertwine in Open Windows is a vivid demonstration of this. It is these few elements, now distant and hinted at and now close and deafening, that paint the backdrop of melancholic nostalgia where laconic whispers move the listener within the paintings that bear the sonic signature of Human Figures. To Daniel Lewis' new project, which has seen its springboard through releases on the label of his friends at Frigio Records, perhaps the adjective "new" is already quite tight. He has built a very recognizable sonic tibre, an influence of producers and listeners at different latitudes of the post-punk and wave scene. 
In the 8 canvases of Open Windows the folk tradition is repainted in a more contemporary guise: the sweet and sad litanies are alternated with fast and frenetic stornelli in which the combination of tradition and experimentation constitutes the stylistic signature. The open window through which the listener has the opportunity to look out in this album does not, however, give onto a natural external panorama. It projects into an inner world where introspection and silence are the only chance to grasp its sublime beauty.

Or in your memory suddenly arose a picture from your childhood: you are driving your father's old car out of town for the first kebabs, in the trunk rattles disassembled brazier, and you anticipate how you will pedal along the paths of the dacha cooperative on an old "Desna". What? Do you really remember how beautiful looked in the sunset sunlight slightly disheveled hair of that very man (you are still shy and do not admit anything), while you went out for a smoke for five minutes? Or maybe there's a 5/8 broadcast playing in your headphones right now: radio from the Accidental Point space? Yeah, probably the latter.

Independent World – Frankfurt’s DIY tape scene.

The fallout from punk and rise of industrial music in the early 1980s spawned many interesting pockets of music culture. In Frankfurt, a small but dedicated network of curious minds started to dabble with synthesisers and drum machines without any thought to where their experiments might lead. Before genre dogmas were established, and with very little in the way of precursors to take their lead from, these artists created their own scene through DIY cassette releases and makeshift live performances. As the 80s wore on and the naïve sounds became more accomplished, more defined musical forms such as EBM and techno emerged and this innocent, youthful movement splintered in many directions. Some of those involved were swept up in the evolution of techno – artists now considered part of the electronic music establishment in Germany such as Tobias Freund, Uwe Schmidt (aka atom™) and Martin Schopf (aka Dandy Jack). Others missed the open-ended abstraction of the early years and drifted on to other ventures. But for a short period of time a spirit of unbridled creativity yielded some truly inventive, unusual electronic music, much of which is hidden on limited run releases lost in the archive of indepen- dent tape culture that proliferated in the 1980s. This is the untold story of Frankfurt’s DIY tape scene.
