Hey… so what are Vintage Bone: B-Sides? They are older songs and little ditties that got lost in my growing pile of recordings. This winter, I have been going through my catalog, pulling out a couple songs, here and there, and creating a new pile called Vintage Bone. Most needed some remixing and production adjustments. Some are first take versions of songs I like to re-record often. Ever notice that sometimes first versions seem to be the best, even if a redo is compositionally better? With this song, ‘There You Are’ from 2015, I noticed the vocals were ruined by plosives, hissing and distortion. (Nope, I do not have a pop filter -yet-. Haha.) There was way too much compression and reverb, and I overdid the EQ… all of which seemed to dull the song's natural character, so I made some adjustments and rerecorded the guitar solos. Sure, it’s just GarageBand, so please, cut me some slack. Thanks. Yes, sometimes I’d rather live in my dreams, with all my favorite ice creams. Most of us spend a third of our lives sleeping and dreaming. I dream like an old dog now. The symbolism and metaphors are wildly revealing. The vast dream world, of the places I go, and people I meet, is filled with extraordinary things. Sometimes there are dangerous situations filled with scary moments. I can fly, sometimes I encounter supernatural beings, but often I have recurring dreams where the places and people are familiar to me. Once in April, I dreamt about a mentor I had as a kid, who died. I woke up crying. I did not know he had passed, and thought he was still alive so I sent him a letter. Months passed, and I forgot about it. Then I received a letter from his wife. She was gracious and said she received my letter in the same month that her husband, my mentor, had passed away years ago. She said April’s were always difficult for her, and the letter was a godsend. In the letter, I had mentioned to my mentor how thankful I was that he was a part of my life as a kid. A bright spot as it were. She said no one ever mentioned that to him before, and thanked me many times. It was that dream that convinced me to pay attention to dreams. I have written over a hundred pages of dream experiences, and hopefully one day before I go, hee-hee…. I will write a book about those dreams. But for now, I have some snow shoveling to do. I started work on this track almost 2 years ago just as we were going into lockdown. Unfortunately I developed a hearing problem in my left ear that required surgery so had to take a step back, can you imagine no music throughout lockdown!!!!!!!  anyhow finally things are good now, thankfully.
                 I hope you like this R&B styled track, this is the first of 2 I was working on!! I have been working Frantically like a robot to get it mixed...hence robot mix.... I also added a robotic count in because I'm nuts!!!! thankyou for all the support!!!

Happy New Year, my friends. Here is my first musical offering for 2021; something designed to lighten our moods and lift our spirits; but not without a hint of reflective seasoning concerning January’s sad events. Needless to say, this has been another rough liner note to write.

My goal has always been to find the positive in any situation. I want to be a voice of love and compassion, and joy and laughter (and all sorts of other ‘good for you’ things). And I figure even the roughest situations can create the most polished of diamonds. But after the assault on our US Capital building last week (and the threats of more to come)… I’m still numb from the shock. 

I know it’s hard to see this as a good thing, but at least one hopeful scenario has come from all of this; awareness of the situation. It’s like a car that thankfully misbehaves in front of the mechanic, so the problem can be diagnosed. The entire world has now been shown the faltering condition of our US engine; and the dangers of letting it remain unrepaired. We also now know the problem runs deep through the veins of our society. And it has been there for a very long time. We have a much better idea of how far we’ve fallen. And that is a positive.

While a part of me wants to rant about recent events for my entire post (lets face it; this noise is at ‘all-you-can-eat buffet’ levels right now), I feel it might be wiser to return to my original goal of being a positive voice… and share something that might help all of us right now.

Years ago, I discovered a wonderful little story (which I’ve shared a few times in my posts and blogs; so forgive me if you already know this one). I’m not really sharing it as an anesthetic to what is happening. I’m sharing it because it is a great set of bifocals for helping us process how we are reacting to it.

As the story goes, a teacher and his pupil were traveling down the winding road back to the monastery. The pupil was clearly lost in thought; struggling to better understand his conflicting emotions, love and fear. He turned to the teacher and asked ‘How do I know what is inside my heart; which of these energies is strongest?’

The wise, old man stopped and said to the pupil “The conflict inside you is like two wolves; the wolf of love and the wolf of fear.”

“But how do I know which is strongest?” Asked the pupil.

“Well, which do you feed the most?” Replied the teacher.

That’s one of my favorite little ‘brain morsel’ discoveries that is helping me keep my mind and heart open. And it’s something both sides of this conflict could really use right now, as a glue for reimagining our country in a better light. Make no mistake… the mess we’re in is quite real. But the solution will not be found in fear. Like Einstein once said. “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them”. Stay strong and positive for each other, my friends. We are the Vox Populi. And if this can be done with love, we will rise out of this darkness. I hope you enjoy my latest musical creation. :)
