Rare Groove - 2 (Continuous)

It's July 20th, 1997... Lobster Jesus and I are in a cheap motel near Akron Ohio returning to NYC from a wedding in Minnesota. Apparently super dated TV Shows and Commercials are the thing here late at night. That old Glade commercial from the 70's comes on, "Fish Odors? Where's My Glade? - The Old Stogie. Where's My Glade?" to which Lob responds at the top of his voice, "Tripping fags in a motel? Where's My Glade?" (SHHHHHHHH!!!)

Flash forward a few years, and a very gay friend of mine hands me some of his favorite "Gay House" tracks and asks me to spin up a CD. I choose the few I can stomach, and decide to mix it up with Acid, just so I can use Lob's quote for a title. That same day Shaun Hilton, who was into Peter Gabriel at the time, asked me if I would ever do a remix of one of his songs. Big Time - Calib's Mix is featured toward the end right before three bonus tracks.

Angels of the Mystic Path is a tribute to the three phases of the Total Solar Eclipse in Leo that took place August 1st, 2008. It is also the name astrologers and spiritualists gave this celestial occurrence, which they viewed as a universal “system reboot” meant to bring to fruition all past problems that have held everyone back from where they need to be, and realigning us with what truly matters to each of us as individuals.

This three CD set is comprised mostly of new releases from July, August & September of 2008, (Deep House, Tech House, Hard Tech) accented midway with a short revisit to older tracks, particularly early nineties classics.

Disc 1 of 3 is appropriately named “Fortuna” after “the bluebird of good luck and life-expanding creative abilities”, so called because of the eclipse’s peaceful blue appearance during its first phase.

Proper Noodling

Okay let’s see how well my memory serves me. It’s March 5th, 1993 at Pete D's apartment  in Greensboro North Carolina, the night before we all head up to “Andromeda” in DC. We’ve managed to acquire a bottle of Vodka and Irish Bailey’s Cream with our meager “Rave Throwing” income”. Non-Technics turntables sit on the floor just outside the kitchen area. So do I. Four drinks later and this set is a hot mess. Not only was this the only time I've been drunk while spinning, it was one of the only times I've been "drunk" at all. The mixes were aggressive fits of defiance toward my inebriated sloppiness and inability to match beats as quickly and flawlessly as I intended - yet when all was said and done, the mistakes not only complimented the style of music, it made it “The Drunk Tape”. The following evening to early morning we are in a parking lot in DC. We easily spend four hours in the back seat of the car with a tiny cassette player pushed into our faces spewing recklessly laid Hard Techno, Acid & Hardcore Gabber mayhem whilst a full blown Rave took place in a warehouse a block away! Sorry Deadly Budda, Josh Wink, James Christian, & Neuromancer… we only made it for the last DJ - Tom T. (Say what now?)

The Drunk Tape (Continuous)

Released in 1999, this dj set was inspired by Juan Atkins' "Mastermix Volume 1", which though released in 1998 was his first ever mixed CD. Joy in Loneliness, a tribute to that release and to the Godfather himself features many of the same tracks, but mixed in Jack MF fashion.

Inspired by "Tracy Goes to New York", Kristan Goes to Atlanta is comprised of records accumulated over the summer of 2010 from a cardboard box marked “FREE” out in front of "Something Absurd" Record Shop in Portland, Maine. Dozens of passed up white labels, test pressings, and used vinyl that were chosen either by instinct, previous knowledge or were already owned by me, were brought home and reviewed. The tracks that bombed were completely outnumbered by a multitude of excellent condition classics that would replace older copies, and even more tracks I had never previously owned but had always wanted. Having already intended to dedicate a CD to Kristan F, (who would be leaving Maine and returning to Atlanta in August) relevant tracks were selected for both aesthetic and lyrics, and the result was an eclectic FOUR CD SET of mostly Vintage House from 1987 to 1997.

Disc 2 of 4 features a very smooth mix of early 90's deep house and techno.
