Align your chakras for Akas. A new name to many but actually a total legend who's been involved in D&B for years and was responsible for signing early releases from a whole class of modern day headliners with his label Talkin Beatz. Back to the future, he's flexing some serious muscles with this debut on DJ Hybrid's Audio Addict. Two tracks, two reasons to tear-up the dance; 'Mini Roller' is a rasping, wasp-like work-out with a bassline that stings and buzzes in all the right places. 'Eurostar', meanwhile, goes into hyperdrive with a bassline that's so naughty it digs its own tunnel to France. No passports necessary!

Never one to hold anything back, Identity Records continues to mold the path of forward thinking dnb, further pushing the limits of the genre through a serious dedication to speaker melting sound design. Next up is Headroom, bringing forth four intense tracks that threaten to take your head clean off while simultaneously forging new methods of composition. 
 
Taking things up a notch, “KBD.” is a masterpiece of restrained ferocity. The driving momentum of the tune sets the stage for the grinding howls and rambunctious shuffle patterns that dot the soundscape. With a vocal sample that meanders through the track, this one perfectly encapsulates that fever pitch sensation before everything explodes. 
 
Stretching out into unknown territory comes “Postal.” Using moody atmospherics, a twitching hat section, and a booming kick, this haunting number means serious business. The different elements ebb and flow into each other, taking us on a storied journey through intricate atmospherics and hypnotizing motifs. 
 
“Bypass’ has all the elements of a filthy sheller: gunshot snares, growling bass lines, throbbing subs, and the incessant chatter of the hat section. However, running throughout the tune is a deep soulful vocal that tugs and soothes the heartstrings. This creates a torrent of pure vibes, one that is completely impossible to resist.
 
Joining with TEE, Headroom brings us the warbling stepper CPU. Possessing an infectious groove that hooks you instantly, the warbling bassline and hook of the snare will have you gyrating around in no time at all. Further solidifying the mood with tough rolling fills and razor sharp shuffles, this is a track that will live in your head long after it dissipated from the speakers.

After guesting on Damageman’s Juno Download chart smash Revenge on Murky Digital last year, Ipswich producer Conrad Subs now makes his full-fledged label debut with the varied four-tracker Dark Sets In.

Known by various monikers for his contributions to the D&B and jungle scenes over the past two decades, the Suffolk native and MAAD TING! head honcho has hit the jackpot since adopting his latest alias, Conrad Subs, in 2017. Making strides with an unfaltering work rate and a flurry of high-profile signings to labels like Soulvent, Liondub and RAM Records imprint Program, he impressed with his critically acclaimed debut LP Tides last summer and has continued to ramp up his output ever since.

This new project finds Conrad further deepening his signature sound, finding the sweet spot between immersive atmospherics and unadulterated grit. Its title track, “Dark Sets In”, is the first up, setting nostalgic, soulful vocals against an intoxicating backdrop of swooping leads, grainy basslines and decorative cowbells to make for one of his most distinctive productions yet. Staying true to this essence, the ensuing number “Expansion” is an equally punchy cut with ambient sensibilities, with its stop-start breakbeats and snarling sucker-punch synth work interwoven with echoing patois vocals, dub sirens and sparkling arpeggios.

Dabbling in an unconventionally pared-back style on “Sketchy”, he distils the D&B recipe down to its base elements, holding back even the sub-bass he gets his name from and opting for a barebones combination of frantic, pounding percussion and coarse, suspensefully infrequent helpings of bass. Last on the menu is “ILLA”, a uniquely wonky and similarly minimal concoction centred around bold, warbling leads, serving as a timely aural reminder of the veteran craftsman’s sound design prowess.

The Dark Sets In EP lands exclusively via Juno Download and Spotify on 17th March 2021, arriving elsewhere a week later on 24th March.
