A spring in the earth gurgles out a stream of water, progressing down hill picking up dead and discarded things it comes in contact with, it also nourishes on it's way. The stream expands as other areas feed into the collective cause of graviational pull. From a distance it seems still and reflective, timeless mirror. Eventually it feeds into a larger body, fulfilling the appetite of the ocean, which, in turn, allows for evaporation into the stratosphere to bring mist and rain, or into the water table beneath the earths surface, at the ocean's bottom.
A snake eating it's tail perpetually. A long term project of sustainability.
Entirely self realized on an audio cassette recorder with the instruments I was fortunate to have at home, this was a practice in sufficiency, and it's success I see as being translatable into all facets of living. The word "Progress" is positive to me and in no way do I see it contradictory to "tradition", a bizarre trend in my country has demonized the word "progressive", the title and sentiment of this piece are my small attempt at pushing an agenda of a longer termed, smaller scale way of seeing profit.

Benjamin Ethan Tinker (New York, 1969) is a multidisciplinary artist and electronic musician who has lived in San Francisco since 1996. He chooses to work primarily with analog synthesizers with which he composes electroacoustic music, and performs regularly with the improv ensemble White Pee, and his own project That Hideous Strength. In addition, he curates and writes about experimental music. He has a BFA in Sculpture from SUNY Purchase and a MFA in Electronic Music from Mills College, between those degrees was a decade of commercial audio engineering.
