The Album's Concept: Everyone has a story, One story; The Monomyth. You are the main character. To understand the nature of story and what it means to us is to understand your own life path. Monomyth Separation is Part One of the Hero’s Journey. Will you accept the call to adventure? 

This album was born during my first big tour of Greece. I played 10 cities and travelled around the whole country playing my music. I received such great energy and feedback from fans that I decided I must make a project inspired by the trip, so I started digging! I collected records from around Greece; some traditional greek music plus other nice bits that I found. Whilst I was traveling, I was trying to come up with a concept that would tell the tale of a great journey. And of course, as I was in Greece ideas of myth and legend came to mind. So, when I returned home I researched a few things and stumbled across a theory by a philosopher and writer called Joseph Campbell. Basically, he wrote a book called “The hero with a thousand faces” in which he describes a theory that all great stories share; common elements - that they are all one story, a Monomyth. Is there a deeper meaning to why we tell stories? Are they a road map for our very existence, and a way to describe the cycle of life, death and rebirth? Due to this the album is very cinematic. I try to tell a story, but I want the listener to decide what that story is. The album will be best enjoyed as a whole so please find a quiet time to settle in and enjoy the ride.

Pressed in 2007 as ‘DC La Groove’, just a few months after I'd put it together, this instantly became a big tune for me and was later included on my Essential Mix in 2009 (http://soundcloud.com/gregwilson/essential-mix-greg-wilson-mix-for-bbc-radio-1) and was most recently featured at the camptastic NYC Downlow in Glastonbury last June (http://soundcloud.com/gregwilson/glastonbury-nyc-downlow-17-06/).   

I’d always been captivated by the lyrics of ‘Cathedrals’ (I’ve copied below what I wrote about the original version for my Time Capsule series), and used to play it when it first came out in ’76, but I wanted a version that placed the emphasis on the superb rhythm section. I’d initially planned to retain some of the vocal, but eventually decided an instrumental would work best for my purposes. I set about removing the vocal sections and, having thrown in some samples for good measure, I knew I had an edit that would do the business. 

Here’s what I wrote in November 2006 for the Nov ‘76 edition of Time Capsule:
“D.C. LaRue's 'Cathedrals' is an acknowledged classic of the Disco era. Released on Pyramid in the US, like many dance records of the time it broke via the gay scene in New York and would climb to number 6 on the Billboard Disco chart. Connecticut born LaRue (real name David Charles L'Heureux) had started out in the music business as a graphic designer, the capacity in which he first met the people at Pyramid. 'Cathedrals', underpinned by a wonderful groove, is a unique sounding record, the lyrics of which I always found somewhat haunting, especially the core question 'where are they now?' and the line that gives the track its title 'they could fill cathedrals' - there was certainly something about 'Cathedrals' that was slightly disquieting. Years later, following the devastation of the gay community in New York as a result of the AIDS virus, 'Cathedrals', listened to in hindsight, seemed to take on something of a prophetic tone - it was almost as though the words could have been written post, rather than pre-AIDS. In an interview in Blues & Soul following the tracks UK release (it had topped the B&S singles chart - a rare occurrence for a white artist, particularly one releasing his first UK single), LaRue explained the meaning of the lyrics: "It's a story about urban sexuality in America. It deals with the actual consciousness of promiscuity that exists in discos around America today - you know, the situation where a guy picks up a girl or another guy at a disco and they go home and make love even before they know each other's name". He continued: "It's such an empty, fruitless way of living to my mind and that's basically what Cathedrals deals with - the emptiness and waste of humanity that this situation creates'. These final words would prove forebodingly true in a way he could never have imagined when he said them.”

Homegrown Los Angeles soul chanteuse Brit Manor is carving out her solo sound with a debut mini-album release on Brooklyn's Bastard Jazz label. The long time triple-threat caused previous sonic waves with her self-released EP series Autoportraits (2011), vocal features on label partner Captain Planet tracks like "In The Gray" (2014) and "Get You Some" (2011, featured prominently on the Orange Is The New Black), and touring and recording collaborations for Nick Waterhouse, Ty Segall, Yellow Alex & the Feelings, Kilo Kish and many more. She also participated in the prestigious Red Bull Music Academy in 2015.

Only Child (produced solely by Captain Planet with the exception of “W8N4U produced by Mike Gao) is a coming of age mini-album that conjures the spirits of a dark past and prays for a cosmic future. Its about taking stock of ourselves, letting go of old ghosts or habits, and moving forward in power and luminescence. The Greek beat-head massive is represented once again on the Cold Busted label with Beatbop Street. It’s an album from the cool new project AndyFellaz, a collaboration of Athens-based producer Billa Qause (Beatquick) and percussionist Nikos Martziokas (Wolfy Funk). Influenced by ’90s hip hop, trip hop, Latin montunos, jazz, and lounge, the pair have delivered fourteen exciting cuts that groove and shimmer with the best of ’em. Highlights include the melancholic skank of “Just One More Time”, “Rumbetas”’s classic acid jazz style, the funky swing of “Two Weirdos”, and “Madrugada”’s dreamy cosmic salsa. The set also includes contributions from Wolfy Project’s bass player Konstantinos Stamou, as well as Yegor Cergei who reveals an elegantly cut-up remix of “Just One More Time”. Beatbop Street will satisfy the hip hoppers, the loungers, the jazzers … pretty much any fan of funky downtempo will be convinced by AndyFellaz. Dig it.

Spiritual lead track 'Through The Woods' is a mesmerising percussive opus with a driving melody and wailing shaman-like vocal that heals the soul, and replenishes your energy ready for a night dancing under the stars.

This year, the legendary "High Priestess of Soul", Ms NINA SIMONE, would be 80 years old. A woman who changed the social and political fabric of America with her fearless songs, her yearning voice, and her raw, worn soul.

Perhaps what has always moved me about Nina's body of work is that her recordings, even her fame in itself, were all auxiliary - just a means to support her continuing education and aspirations of becoming a classical pianist. Her songs had their own meanings and subjects of course, but by reflecting on her life's work as a whole, you can plot the points between these songs like a constellation. They were rungs on the ladder of her ever-climbing journey. You can hear in each recording a completely pure reflection of how she was feeling - passionate, strong, devoted, frisky, suspicious, proud, or just downright tired.

THIS FRIDAY NIGHT, JULY 5TH 2013, Los Angeles gathers for a sure-to-be-epic evening of free music and revelry around this particularly authentic high priestess. Join us all at GRAND PERFORMANCES for "YOUNG, GIFTED, and NINA", featuring LA's deepest musical luminaries from the Jazz, Soul, Blues, Poetry and recording world as we come together for this majestic tribute.

This event is produced with unmatched dedication by JONATHAN RUDNICK, and the visionary music direction of DEXTER STORY,  the men behind last year's also epic "PEACE GO WITH YOU, GIL" tribute to Gil Scott-Heron. The epic 10 minute ‘Closer To The Source Mix’ features the full song including Michele Weeks superb vocals over that classic piano riff, complete with jazzy finale. While the ‘Dub Re-Organisation’ starts off with a long building hammond solo before dropping into heavily verbed percussion and echoing vocals leaving the piano for the final third of the mix.
