Final 30 minutes was cut off by me.. when i realised that it was an external recording, instead of an internal one - in hindsight, i should have left it as it was till the end. Chingyi's unique sound is an ethereal blend of downtempo, electronica and techno, that creates a soundscape of inner colors and deep connection. Her music style evolved through her continuous self-discovery, culminating in multi-dimensional, psychedelic, yet rooted, bass-driven sounds.

Chingyi's sound is genre-defying, drawing influence from a range of styles including downtempo, techno, dub, and indie dance. Her music is characterized by its ability to create journeys that connect external perceptions with inner landscapes of mind and psyche. Chingyi' sees music as a tool for awareness that has the potential to generate positive change in oneself and the world.

Having hosted and played at dozens of festivals such as Interlude, Kiosky, New Wave, and played for local music collectives Y2K, Interlude, Omni, Pitch, Dimension 5, etc., Chingyi shares her passion for music with the community. Her radio sets “Digital Trip” and “Dualism” at FMBG have received recognition from music enthusiasts.

In addition, Chingyi has co-created embodied dance meditation events with collectives Mystic Disco and ReTribe. Through her music, a journey that allows for emotional expression unfolds into a deeper connection with oneself and others.

"We wanted to do a proper, 128 BPM house mix. Our very ecstatic, house energy mix. It’s going to be just over an hour, because we want it to be in that radiant space for the entire time and play some of our older favourites, as well as newer favourites from our record bag over this past year. We’re not like ‘track of the week’ DJs, when we love something, it’s getting played over the span of a few years, sometimes even 10 years."

The doyenne of minimal reflects on Perlon, forgotten classics and the tracks that never leave her record bag in this live edition of Playing Favourites at Dimensions Festival. 

Following the minimal boom of the '00s and early '10s, the sound has in more recent years flourished quietly in the smaller corners of certain scenes. It certainly, as some people like to claim, never died. In fact, if you were to discuss this with Sonja Moonear, the Swiss DJ would argue that the genre is as popular as ever.

Much like the other artists in the upper echelons of the scene—Zip, Raresh, Nicolas Lutz—Moonear made a name for herself by DJing rather than making music. She cut her teeth in Geneva as a resident at its key club at the time, Weetamix. Perlon label head Zip was a regular guest and, as Moonear recounts, he invited her to play in Berlin after she warmed up for him a few times. Moonear is now an in-demand DJ in her own right, with a style that takes in a broad cross-section of house, techno and minimal.

Recorded at last summer's Dimensions Festival, this edition of Playing Favourites sees Moonear select some of her favourite '90s and early '00s minimal classics and the records that never leave her record bag. She's truly obsessed with music and finding rare grooves, and her enthusiasm shines through. In between playing tracks, she talks about the squat scene in Geneva and how she spends hours preparing her bag every week. She reminisces about the first time she put her hand on a turntable; her transition away from the piano as an adolescent; and her primary goal in her career, which is "purely to enjoy herself."
