1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

I'm Strictly Kev aka DJ Food, I've been DJing for over 30 years now and collecting vinyl for longer. I've no idea how many records I have but it's probably in the region of 10,000 7", 12" and LPs plus lots of other odd formats that I collect as well as just the music. It's housed in my studio in custom built shelves that include drawers for 45s, cassettes and CDs. 2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.

I like that the songs are short and sweet, there's no chaff so the track says what it needs to and then it's done, which is essentially what a DJ needs in today's ADD society. I like the size and weight of them compared to 12"s and LPs because I've used digital means to DJ for 8 years now and, when I do go back and play vinyl, I don't want to break my back like I used to lugging a 30 kilo record box around. 

3) One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

There's a lot of guitars, fuzz and distortion in this one, lots of solid drums too, I'm really digging a lot of the funkier side of rock and psyche in my 45 sets and this comes out here.  Some of it is where rock and electronica cross over though so you'll have DJ Shadow remixing John Spencer Blues Explosion, Brendan Lynch's dub mixes of Paul Weller or Graham Massey's Toolshed project. There's also straight up rock by The Zutons, The Go! Team or Primal Scream and more diggers delights like The Protein Bros, Chaps and Alan Copeland. I try and have a good mix of contemporary stuff in there too, the 45 format shouldn't always be about old, hard to find stuff from the 60s and 70s, there's plenty of great new music around, just as hard to find too.

Solid Steel (25th November) Jon More and Matt Black - aka Coldcut - are back on vinyl and back on Solid Steel celebrating the release of their new  EP 'Only Heaven' released on Ahead Of Our Time, the label name Matt and Jon chose for their first records. The EP features Roots Manuva and Roses Gabor and producer Dave Taylor (Switch / With You.) Their mix is heavy on the reggae featuring music from Max Romeo, International Observer, Dillinger, The Upsetters, Big Youth, alongside Congo Natty, Bjork and the title track from their new EP.

Bringing the heat once again – Brighton’s flaming hot funk crew Jalapeno Records team up with South Coast Beats specialists Soul Casserole to bring you the second edition of The Jalapeno Bop with Monophonics, Izo FitzRoy and Boca 45.

The inaugural event at The Old Market, Brighton was 100% sold out and with this line-up the summer bop looks certain to follow in its footsteps.

San Francisco’s incredible Monophonics will be the headline live act - flying in from the US for this special show. Two albums deep and this west coast psychedelic soul band have built a cult following that allows them to play to massive audiences across Europe.

Opening up live proceedings will be Jalapeno’s blues and gospel star Izo FitzRoy. Her incredible debut album Skyline has won her fans across the globe and this will be a chance for you to hear new material from her forthcoming second album.

And closing things down will be one of the finest DJ’s we have ever seen – Bristol’s Boca 45. Never one to be pigeonholed on his sound only two things will be true. He will only be playing 45’s and he is sure to be as funky as hell.
