Guinea Conakry has a rich musical history, especially after the country’s independence in 1958 which allowed decades of beautiful music to flourish across the country.

The Syliphone record label has allowed many talented orchestras to record their music, constituting now an invaluable cultural heritage.

Guinean Music is fantastic and clearly unique : a blend of traditional, West-African and Afro-Cuban music. 

Beyond their typically deep, funky and groovy music, Guinean orchestras have also played Latin music, covering Cuban songs the Guinean way. 

The result is breathtaking....

En 1974, Pete “El Conde” Rodríguez, el cantante estelar de los últimos años en el conjunto de Pacheco, es lanzado como solista por el sello FANIA, y Johnny en una hábil jugada recurre, para su reemplazo, al cantante cubano Héctor Casanova, quien había grabado con la banda de Monguito Santamaría y que poseía un timbre de voz muy similar al de Rodríguez, pero con estilo diferente a la hora de atacar el montuno salsero.
En 1975, Pacheco publica el álbum EL MAESTRO, (Fania SLP-485), con la vocalización de Casanova y que contiene dos temas de gran importancia para la salsa:Guaguancó pa’l que sabe, composición de Felipe Yánez -para quien está dedicado el álbum- con un excelente solo de piano de Papo Lucca y Faisán, y un magistral solo de tres ejecutado por Charlie Rodríguez. El álbum, que incluye otros éxitos como Yo no parlevu France, composición de Pacheco; Simaní; Las Muchachas, del maestro Billo Frómeta; y Mango Mangüe de Francisco Fellove, recibe la primera nominación de Pacheco para el premio Grammy. A partir de éste álbum, la orquesta se presenta como PACHECO Y SU TUMBAO AÑEJO.

Han pasado 5 años desde la creación de la banda (2009), en todo ese tiempo los Ska Jazz Messengers han tenido que sobrellevar diversas vicisitudes a la hora de editar material en estudio, e incluso han tenido que sobrellevar cambios en sus filas. Es así como en este año 2014 la banda renace mostrando nuevas caras en su formación. Un comienzo “desde cero” con 7 músicos llenos de ganas, nuevos temas, nuevas energías y nuevas metas. Al line up de Raúl Guzmán en el bajo, Giuseppe Cammisuli en los saxos, Ronald Alvarado en la trompeta y Rafael Frías en la guitarra, se le suman 3 caras nuevas que dan un plus al sonido de los SJM.  Comenzando por Grey Hernández, joven cantante prodigiosa (vocalista de la Orquesta De Rock Sinfonico Simón Bolívar), el experimentado Gerardo Uberting en los teclados (quien fuera músico de la recordada agrupación Hora Cero) y el señor Osmel Vahamonde en la batería (uno de los bateristas más elogiados en la escena del Reggae Nacional).

Para mostrar el nuevo sonido de la banda, los Ska Jazz Messengers adaptaron hasta sus “aguas musicales” el famoso tema del cantante estadounidense Pharell Williams: Happy. Tras el re inicio de la banda y sin pensarlo mucho, ésta decidió hacer una grabación “casera” en su propia sala de ensayos y así fue como se le dio vida a esta adaptación, la cual está disponible a descarga digital GRATUÍTA. De ese modo es como los “Messengers” se presenta ante ustedes con una versión Neo Soul, Dancehall, Jazzy Ska de HAPPY.
