Shamans of Sound are back with Things In Our Nation, brand new fire they cooked up during the global pandemic. “Now Is The Time for revolution, Now Is The Time for retribution.” While SleepWalker's lyrics speak to a worldwide massive, his upbeat delivery and rhymes keep the party moving. The groove laid down underneath is a serious head-nodder, Shamans of Sound have come with a reggae dance party revolution. This is the second Shamans of Sound tune to feature SleepWalker, and he is carving out a nice sound with positive messages. British Columbia's own ROOKS has provided a funky breakbeat remix, great for DJs and Dancefloors. Instrumentals of both the original and remix are also available. Asymetrics Charts - DJ Pohy (April 2022)

Pour passer du songe à la réalité, tout a commencé avec un beat hip-hop lofi, pas trop lent, qu’il reste dansant et entraînant. Afin de donner une couleur lofi à la batterie, les samples de caisses claires ont été mélangées avec des sons de stylo frappé sur une table, ou de claquement de doigts. Pour accompagner le beat, j’ai choisi une basse électrique qui met le sourire aux lèvres et qui fait bouger les épaules. Un piano acoustique ou électrique, avec des accords doux et chaleureux, complète la section rythmique.  Après avoir calé tout ça, j’y appose une mélodie, à la guitare acoustique ou au piano.

Ensuite, je rajoute un peu de textures et de variations avec quelques samples de erhu, de flûtes et de saxophone ici et là. Et, enfin, pour que les sons s’enchaînent facilement et que l’ensemble puisse prendre vie et s’anime, je me suis servi d’un kalimba, d’un xylophone en métal, d’un carillon, de shakers et d’un petit kayamb. (Une pôele a même été utilisée pour faire les sons de cloches dans l’introduction de “Somnolence”)

La quasi totalité des sons sont joués et enregistrés “maison” et la création de cet EP a duré 3 semaines.

La pochette qui illustre ces quelques morceaux a été faite avec l’aide de ma compagne Virginie. Nous avons sélectionné des photos que nous avons prises lors de nos road trip à la montagne, en forêt, à la plage. Nous les avons imprimées, puis découpées et assemblées pour former une image onirique, qui tente de représenter des songes.

To go from dream to reality, it all started with a lofi hip-hop beat, not too slow, but still dancing and lively. In order to give a lofi color to the drums, the samples of snare drums were mixed with sounds of pen hitting on a table, or snapping of fingers. To accompany the beat, I chose an electric bass that puts a smile on your face and makes your shoulders move. An acoustic or electric piano, with soft, warm chords, completes the rhythm section. After setting all that up, I wrote a melody on it, on the acoustic guitar or the piano. 

Then I add some textures and variations with a few samples of erhu, flutes and saxophone here and there. And, finally, so that the sounds flow easily and the whole thing can come to life, I used a kalimba, a metal xylophone, a chime, shakers and a small kayamb. (A stove was even used to make the bell sounds in the intro to “Somnolence”) 

Almost all the sounds are played and recorded by myself, and the creation of this EP lasted 3 weeks. 

The cover that illustrates these few tracks was made with the help of my partner Virginie. We have selected photos that we took during our road trips in the mountains, in the forest, at the beach. We printed them, then cut them out and assembled them to form an image, which tries to represent dreams.
