It seems that Pasolini was undecided on what type of conclusion the film should have, to the point of having conceived and shot four different endings: the first was a shot of a red flag in the wind with the words "Love You," but it was abandoned by the director because he thought it "too pompous" and "prone to the ethics of psychedelic youth" which he detested. The second showed all the actors in the film, other than the four gentlemen, the director and his troupe perform a wild dance in a room of the villa furnished with red flags, and the scene was filmed with the purpose of using it as a background during the credits, but was discarded because it appeared, in the eyes of Pasolini, chaotic and unsatisfactory. Another final scene, discovered recently and which was only in the initial draft of the script, showed, after the torture's end, the four gentlemen walk out of the house and drawing conclusions about the morality of the whole affair. Finally, keeping the idea of dance as the summation of carnage Pasolini chose to mount the so-called final "Margherita," with the two young soldiers dancing.

la historia se remonta a muchos siglos atrás, a unos tiempos ahora envueltos en la bruma del misterio. Algunos historiadores sitúan el origen de la fiesta de San Valentín en la antigua Roma, en la celebración de las lupercales, también llamadas lupercalia.

Estas se celebraban ante diem XV Kalendas Martias, lo que equivalía al 15 de febrero. Supuestamente la palabra deriva de lupus (lobo) un animal que representaba al dios Fauno, que tomó el sobrenombre de Luperco, y de hircus, por el macho cabrío, un animal impuro. Los acólitos se reunían en una cueva sagrada y, siguiendo la tradición, el sacerdote sacrificaba una cabra y, a continuación, los niños salían a la calle para azotar a las mujeres con la piel de los animales para incentivar su fertilidad.

Comenzamos a rodear la montaña, y cuando la tromba calló sobre ella, afortunadamente ya habíamos pasado a la otra vertiente. Por fin, a las once de la noche, en plena oscuridad, llegamos a la cumbre del Sneffels. Antes de refugiarnos en el interior del cráter, pude ver el sol de medianoche que proyectaba sus pálidos rayos sobre la isla dormida a mis pies. Dimos cuenta de la cena rápidamente y nos instalamos lo mejor que pudimos. La cama era dura y las condiciones poco acogedoras, pero logré dormir de un tirón y ni siquiera soñé. Al día siguiente nos despertó un sol espléndido. Desde la cima se dominaba la mayor parte de la isla. Veía los valles, los lagos y los precipicios diminutos abajo, a mis pies. A la derecha, glaciares y picos humeantes, y al oeste, Groenlandia en medio de la bruma.
